Blue Cypress Sunset, first step of painting, by Judy Batterson

This is the first step of a large oil painting of a beautiful Florida lake at sunset. If anyone saw this first step, they would never
be able to imagine the finished painting which is in my head. But, as with all things, the foundation is most important! I will be posting sequences of the painting until it is completed. Usually, it takes ten or so layers but I will post it in a sequence of six photos. www.judybatterson.com

Visions of Florida

Sun and Sea, Oil on canvas, 12 in. x 9 in.

Watching the sun set over the Gulf is a favorite pastime. I took simple designs and shapes from nature and abstracted them. I think of this style as abstracted representationalism. I keep going back to this subject. Usually, I prefer to work on a larger canvas when I paint the sea and sky, but this painting worked in a small size. Sharon Guy Art

Wildflower Garden In Denmark, 16x12, by Maryanne Jacobsen, paintings of wildflower gardens, impressionist gardens, paintings with impasto

"Wildflower Garden in Denmark"-12x16, oil on linen-$350

A few years back, my husband and I took a trip to Denmark to visit my husband's relatives and celebrate the birthday of a cousin. We had a wonderful time and were able to go back in time and trace my husband's history, which included a dad who was a stowaway on a boat out of Copenhagen headed for America many, many years ago. The stowaway dad was discovered at Ellis Island, became a merchant marine, and the rest is history for our family!

The Scandinavian cousin took us on a wonderful tour while we were there, and today I pulled out the pictures I had taken from the trip. This one caught my eye:

I recall the moment I spied this beautiful wildflower garden. We had just come over a bridge where there was a castle-like structure with a swan in the water and some red -timbered buildings with thatched roofs to the left of us... Sorry, I can't recall the name of that particular village in Denmark, but if anyone knows of it, I'd love to have a name attached to my painting!

At the foot of that bridge was this incredible wildflower garden, and although I was not a painter at the time, I knew I had to try to capture the beauty of that garden with my camera! Anyway, the trip was wonderful, and I am glad that although I was using a pretty lousy camera at the time, I was able to translate my memories of the moment into a painting!

This painting has been in a City Hall exhibit for the past few months and it just came down today, so the painting is now available for purchase. Please visit my blog at PaintDance, if you wish to purchase this painting.

Gulf Coast Birds by Sharon Guy

Willet, Oil on canvas, 10 in. x 8 in.

A willet is a drab water bird with long grey legs that stays by the water's edge. Willets nest in the Gulf coast in the winter. The sunlight brought out a little color in the plumage. This was at Lido Beach, Florida where the water is a beautiful greenish-blue. It was a windy morning and the waves were cresting along the edge of the beach. The bird stood fairly still while I sketched and photographed it. These are some of the many waterbirds that are in danger from the oil in the Gulf. Sharon Guy Art

Tangerines and Grapes, low key painting, 16x12, by Maryanne Jacobsen, oil on linen

"Tangerines and Grapes", 16x12, oil on linen

I finally managed to paint something after a dry spell, filled with self-doubt and despondence over the oil spill. It's definitely a low key painting, but the tangerines add the warmth required to pull off a painting this low key. It's pretty loose and I enjoyed trying out a couple new brushes that I'd bought a few weeks ago.

If you have any interest in this painting, please send me an email at maryanne jacobsen@aol.com. and please visit my blog and website if you have the chance!

Thanks for looking!

"Full Bloom" by Sally Shisler

"Full Bloom" (29x29")-201053
Somehow it slipped my mind to post the third Disney painting. Oops. I got swamped with medical illustration work just after these paintings were completed, and I had to get it done before we left on a week long family vacation. That could be why! And my husband and I are about to embark on another week long trek up towards Asheville, NC. A MUCH needed couple's respite from our blessed, although hectic daily lives. We have the great fortune to have close friends who offered their cabin to us for the week. It's a last minute fling - the best kind of getaway! Back to the artwork.... I haven't looked at this piece since I dropped it off, and I tell you - it was my least favorite of the the three. But right now after posting it, I realize how much I do like it! Of course, this happens ALL the time. Kind of tricky when most of my work is done on self imposed deadlines that I set in order to maintain spontaneity and avoid the stickiness of paint that's beginning to dry. I couldn't even count the number of 'daily' paintings that I've completed, but not posted because of my mental state upon completing them. Quite often I hate them & wouldn't dare have anyone look at them. It's a bit frightening to realize how screwed up & contradictory the human mind can be - mine anyway. The important thing is that Disney is thrilled with all three paintings. They were installed yesterday in the 'grand entryway' to the main sales office for the ritzy development that will start soon. I'm told I'll get photos of them hanging with the rest of the deco. I'll post them when I get them.

Kiawah Island Art

Edge of the Sea, Oil on canvas, 14 in. x 11 in.

The dunes along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding Kiawah Island are a good source of interesting scenes. I was there in the winter when the sky was cloudy but the sun came out for a short time when I was looking at this view of East Beach. Kiawah Island is a great place to visit during the off-season when it is fairly quiet. The streets are named after birds, and the landscaping is perfect. Strict zoning laws create a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. In December, the shops are all decorated tastefully with lights and wreathes, and it is fun a fun place to do Christmas shopping. I hope to visit again sometime. Sharon Guy Art

Storm Coming, a Florida Oil Landscape of Blowing Palms and Waves by Judy Batterson

From daily afternoon thunderstorms to hurricanes, Florida skies are filled with clouds of darks and lights when the rains gather and the winds blow. Although ominous, it is also beautiful to watch the weather change. I tried to capture the movement and feeling by putting thick oil brushstrokes on top of layers of thinner layers. This is a 16 x 20" oil on masonite. It is one of the paintings chosen for Best of America Oil Artists Volume II, published six months ago. A lot of emotion went into this one! For more Florida oil landscapes, visit my website at www.judybatterson.com.

Coastal Escape, a Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

This is a scene along the Florida Intracoastal Waterway which flows along the coastline next to the Atlantic Ocean. The barrier islands make up the true beaches of Florida, and the waterway is on the other side. Captured in oil, the Florida sky adds so much dimension and movement to the overall landscape. The palms, palmettos and mangroves show the land in its natural form. And the water is like the anchoring factor which brings it together. Many layers of oil went into the depth of the painting. This painting was chosen to be in the "Simply the Best" book by Timothy's Gallery and Art-Exchange.com. It is an 18 x 22 original oil on masonite. Although the original has been sold, stretched, hand-embellished and numbered giclees are available for $400. For more Florida natural landscapes, visit www.judybatterson.com.

"Ayefour Evening" by Sally Shisler

"Ayefour Evening" (28x40")-201052
Here's the largest of the three paintings for Disney. I really was pleased with this one as well. A good amount of time was spent on giving it a proper title, and I have to credit my husband for it, because I didn't know anything about the history. Ayefour is a pun on route I-4, which runs E-W through Lake Buena Vista where Disney began his land prospecting for the park. He used it as a company name for a while. Kinda catchy! I wanted to bring up the issue of stretching unprimed canvas, which is what I had to do for these paintings because of the custom sizes. Boy - it was my first time...and my last! Next time I have to do it, I'll gladly pay the local art/framing shop the few hundred it wants to do it for me. The time it took & the expense for materials was were wasted in the end because I don't believe the canvases are as tight as they should be, and I'm praying that they hold up.

"Living Along the Marsh" by Sally Shisler

"Living Along the Marsh" (29x29")-201051
Here is the first of the 3 big Disney commissions. It had been a long time since I worked this large and boy, was it fun. There is far more texture in these than in my past work. Not because I set out to have it this way, but because the paint was drying really fast, even though it was oil. I painted these in my back yard because my studio isn't big enough to accommodate the mess I make when there's this much work. I wasn't limited in content, which was good because all of them morphed a lot during painting. And they wanted really bold, popping colors too. Suffice to say that the canvases took quite the beating over several days of work. This one may be my favorite...

Poinciana and Oranges, a Florida Oil Landscape of Orange Grove, Poinciana Tree, Old Florida by Judy Batterson

A friend called me to say that she had just seen her first poinciana tree in full bloom and was amazed by the vivid beauty of the
bright red blossoms. The reason she recognized the tree is because she had seen this painting. This painting captures the feel of old Florida with a sandy road, an orange grove, and a small lake next to a blooming poinciana tree. The Highwaymen loved to paint the poinciana trees, too, and now I know why. The bright blossoms lend themselves to thick brushstrokes and built up oil texture which make the scene pop with color. This is a 21 x 36" original oil on masonite. For more Florida landscapes, visit my website at www.judybatterson.com.

Great Blue Herons

Great Blue Heron Pair, Oil on canvas, 18 in. x 14 in.

Here is a closer view of a heron pair that I have painted before. I used a loose, impressionistic style with a simple design for this one. I felt like being expressive with color to create a mood. Now I feel even more drawn to paint water birds since so many of them are in danger because of the oil spill. Sharon Guy Art.

Autumn's Last Hurrah, 36x24, by Maryanne Jacobsen, oil on wrapped canvas

SOLD
"Autumn's Last Hurrah"- 36x24, oil on wrapped canvas-$1200.00 plus shipping

This painting was the result of two things.

#1 I had recently sold one of my favorite paintings ("God's Palette") which had been hanging in my family room since I painted it about 3 years ago. I sold it last month and the gaping space above the couch in the family room was really bothering me. So I set out to paint another "God's Palette".

The result is different, as it's always impossible to duplicate what you've done in the past. I then struggled with whether it was as good as God's Palette or not. Family members were supportive and assured me that it is as good or even better, but definitely different in color temperature and paint application.

#2- In using a lot of happy color, I was trying to get my mind off of the depressing state of affairs in the gulf of Mexico, but my daughter-in-law pointed out that my use of cool colors over the past 6 weeks is a bit indicative of my mood. Anyway, I do love this scene very much, and I think the fact that I've painted it a number of times reflects that love. It is a scene from Chester County, Pennsylvania where I lived for many years, off of French Creek in Birchrunville, and I certainly miss those beautiful autumn colors now that I live in Florida.

This painting is on hold and has been promised to a new collector who was disappointed when "God's Palette" sold and asked me to keep her in mind if I ever did another. The lady that is purchasing this painting, has said that she still prefers "God's Palette" to my new painting. I am hoping she will change her mind when she sees this in person! The colors are very vibrant and after touching up some passages yesterday, I can finally say that I am very happy with this painting.

Fellow artists, I would love to know what you think. DO you think this is a happy painting or not? Does your mood come through when you paint? IN what ways? Please leave me a comment!
