"In the Spotlight" by Sally Shisler

"In the Spotlight" © Sally Shisler, 2010
(8x10")-201074; Members-$600 framed

This painting is the companion to yesterday's post, Sharing the Stage. I worked on these over several sessions for most of last week with the goal of visiting two very different lighting conditions; one under a shade tree with dappled sunlight and the other in full-on bright light. Of course, I'm very familiar with the latter - which is today's post, In the Spotlight. The dappled lighting is an entirely different story (yesterday's post), and took much more observation and studying time for me. Working on a painting for more than one session is an entirely different experience from my preferred mode, which is 'in one sitting'. The process changes from spontaneous and immediate, to very pensive and often tangential. Meaning there is so much opportunity for my mind to lose focus on what the inspiration was to begin with. One hallmark of a truly great painter is the patience & maturity to let an idea unfold and paint itself over time. I'm learning, but it's oh so hard not to engage in distraction and folly! That said, I will admit that my favorite paintings are like the small ones that I've been posting lately. Fleeting inspirations that have to be dealt with right away - 'putting out fires', if you will. Though not in a bad way, just little burning desires that need attention.

"Indian Summer" by Sally Shisler $325

"Indian Summer" © Sally Shisler, 2010
(12x9")-201072; Members-$325

Why yes - we are indeed still smack dab in the middle of 'the hottest central Florida summer on record'. And the dog days haven't even arrived yet! So I thought it would be fun to have a little imaginary respite from it all with this autumn scene. If you can sense the air temperature from the colors I've used, you know that it's still actually on the warmish side; maybe Indian summer? I haven't posted over the last few days but I have been working each day on some garden paintings. I had gotten so caught up in the mini paintings that it was time to stretch out a bit again. They are in their very final icing on the cake stage and I'll post them when they're done. Back to this painting - I had lots of paint left on my palette from the garden scenes and had it on my mind that I wanted to fiddle around with very oily, wet into wet paint. Love the transparency of alizarin crimson - LOVE it! I use it in almost all my work, but usually it's mixed with something else. My goal was to indulge my wild and crazy side and just paint on gut reaction to each successive stroke and color I put down. I really like this piece, which is typically the case with work that comes from the heart.

Daily Painting 1111 Thunderstorm over the Savannas

Plein Air Painting from North Carolina by Sharon Guy

Mountain Shapes, Oil on canvas, 8 in. x 10 in.

I painted this on site at Wildacres in North Carolina. I used a simple design to show the shapes of the mountains and trees without a lot of detail. Painting en plein air gave me some fresh material to use for a series of mountain paintings. Working outside can be a struggle, but I succeeded in finding scenes that I could work from to create powerful images. I consider a painting a success when I express emotion and mood with color and design, rather than merely representing the landscape in an ordinary way. My website is at Sharon Guy Art.

Palm Glow, a Sunset Glow on Palm Tree and Beach by Judy Batterson

This painting is filled with color! It glows with a soft orange light and is softened by blue shadows. I decided to paint a palm tree on the beach which would seem radiant with warm light as the sun started to set. The sand reflects color as well as the waves.
I put the same colors in the clouds. Orange and blue are good colors in a painting! www.judybatterson.com

Plein Air Painting by Sharon Guy

Pat's Garden, Oil on canvas, 14 in. x 11 in.

This is a plein air painting I completed in North Carolina during a workshop taught by Jean Blackburn at Ringling Wildacres. The Ringling College of Art and Design has July and October programs at Wildacres, a retreat in the Blue Ridge mountains, north of Asheville. I spent a week painting outside in the pleasant, dry air of North Carolina. While admiring this huge garden I was inspired to paint freely with a lot of bright colors. Plein air painting is a great way to get direct inspiration from what is in front of me. For more art visit my website at Sharon Guy Art.

Thanks, first, to all of you who left comments on the moonrise painting below! Now, back to high contrast with this one. When there are this many different shapes in a little painting like this, it's impossible to give each one as much attention as you think you might like to. While the chapel is the intended main event, I decided not to make it the obvious focal point and let it run off the left edge of the painting for more interest. It has less treatment than any of the rest of the painting, but perhaps the most impact because of it's ambiguity. We've had SO much sun here in Florida this summer - I think some of what I'm looking at is permanently imprinted on my brain!

OK - I wrote a bit earlier today about some of my process in a comment I left to thank everyone for their lovely input on yesterday's post below. It's about knife strokes, energy & momentum, so if you're so inclined, check it out! And....here's my first ever moonlight painting. This is a subject that can easily lure an artist into a trap! We have an idea in our heads of what moons & suns & flowers & faces, etc. ought to look like. We have distinct visions of them - symbols or icons. But a successful portrait, for example, materializes from the artist carefully studying the shapes created by the light & shadow over the varying planes. Not from painting a head with eyes, nose & mouth. It's the same here - you need to observe what's really there in front of you - the lights & darks, the shapes created, the subtle variation in hue, value & temperature. I guess that's the challenge in painting anything, familiar or not.

(4x4")-201068; Members-$75

Here is another very high key piece with the stark, bright warm white of the building building lit up by the late evening sun contrasted with cooler, filtered light in the foreground. A study of more complex lighting conditions like the Remembering Bat Cave post from a few days ago. Degree of difficulty? For me - hard, hard and yes, harder! I soooo want to create a new kind of palette knife, and just may, actually. But I won't tell you what it is until I patent it : ) I am really loving all of the studies in light that I've done this past two weeks. Tonight I saw the most incredible moonrise. If I'm right, it looks like tomorrow will be a full moon, and if all goes well, I would like to give it a go. We'll see...

I want to comment on my predictions for yesterday's post, Remembering Bat Cave. First off, based on recent viewing stats on the Daily Painters Website, I have seen a trend in what types of paintings of mine are liked enough to be worthy of a second, closer look. It's probably no surprise at all to hear that it's the ones with high value contrast. You also like the paintings with buildings a lot. Put the two of those together and my viewing stats go through the roof. I knew that a lower contrast, more subtle color and value range would not draw anywhere near the attention that the others of recent past have. Even with the buildings that help give a sense of place. I'll bet many of you other artists out there find the very same thing; that often when you love a certain painting, not many others share the feeling. It's curious how that works. No matter really, there were still enough admirers that I feel I've accomplished the main goal, and that is always to 'relate' somehow to my viewers. And thanks to all of you who have made so many nice comments! Oh - as for this post, Living Green, I am back to high contrast, but chose to keep the color palette pretty much in the greens, with shifts in temperature and value to tell the story.

Perfect Day on the Lagoon, a Florida Oil Painting of Waves and Palm on a Balmy Day, by Judy Batterson

South of New Smyrna Beach and near Canaveral Seashore is Mosquito Lagoon. It's a boating and fishing paradise, dotted with
islands and home to wildlife. On a perfect boating day, the breezes blow and the sun shines while the waves lap at the shoreline. Flat boats are everywhere with fishermen waiting patiently. The painting colors here are on the cool side while still reflecting light.
The many layers of oil built up the texture of the brushstrokes. Light layers show the shallow water at the edge of the shore.

Soooo, it was time today to try something different - a little shift of gears from the bright noontime scenes (which will likely be back again tomorrow...). As I mentioned a few posts back, the evenings in NC were spectacular. That time of day around 7-8pm when everything green is coming alive. The fragrance is overwhelming, one of my favorite smells! There was so much painting potential, but no time. So one by one the scenes passed and my heart broke (OK - that's a little dramatic...) knowing it would be a while before I'd have the opportunity to paint there again. But today I was looking through some of our photos, and there was just enough essence in them to jog my memory of how things looked each evening as we drove through Bat Cave. And I was able to put myself there again and mix the colors that tell about the time and the place. It may not seem like much as far as content goes, but I am really very, very happy with the effect that this little piece has.

"A Brilliant Day" by Sally Shisler $75

"A Brilliant Day" © Sally Shisler, 2010
(4x4")-201065; Members-$75

The sunny and very hot weather here in Florida can really take a toll on a plein air painters eyes. Especially if you're attempting to paint a stark white building at high noon. I always wear a hat, but for this I had to wear sunglasses too; something I don't usually do because of the color distortion. I think I worked around that pretty well though. The series of paintings that I've done this month have really paid homage to summertime afternoon lighting. I'm starting to feel very comfortable and more confident in my color mixing and value matching and I think that working in such high contrast conditions really does simplify things.

The beauty of the mountains we saw in NC is still on my mind. This piece is from the memory of a little home tucked into a corner at the base of two foothills. We passed this each evening as we made our way back to the cabin. The size of the building relative to it's natural surroundings really puts things in perspective. And how the heck long must it take to mow that much grass?? I imagine when you live like this, you have the proper machinery to do it in a snap. I love the solid presence of flat stretches of sunlit grass.

Boy, have I had an awesome art filled day. It was the last chance to see "Transcending Vision: American Impressionism 1870-1940" here in Orlando at the OMA. Kick butt, incredible, astounding & inspiring artists and their paintings. I saw some of my favorites from the New Hope, PA colony of American Impressionists; Daniel Garber, Edward Redfield to name a few. And many, many more whose names I jotted down & intend to research when time permits. Who of you out there knows of Edward Potthast? OMG - if you don't and you like impressionist figures in broad daylight, you must do your research. The quality of outdoor light and atmosphere that he achieved is unprecedented, as far as I'm concerned. His brushstrokes through thick paint just rock my world. And so, today's painting is inspired by what I saw today. I have been working diligently again these days, and it's refreshing to see that my work is taking on a new level, higher or parallel I'm not sure. But I also see the features, style if you will, of my past work, and that is reassuring.

I have studied this scene many a time at my friend's house out in the Florida countryside which, like I often say, is not really much like what you think of when you think of Florida. Not a palm tree in sight, and you'd have a hard time guessing where you're at. Sarge loves his time here with his favorite canine pal, Dusty. He's simply in heaven! I finally feel like I've captured the essence of my friends' sprawling back yard property. I have taken artistic license with many a thing in this interpretation, but in my heart, this is the Mielke Way!

"Pounding Mill Overlook" by Sally Shisler $75

"Pounding Mill Overlook"(4x4")-201061 $75
It was quite late in the day when I took the photo of this painting, and I'm not yet sold on how it's translating here. Regardless, this breathtaking little corner of our world is occupied each year by way more people than I can even venture a guess at. Conveniently located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, you can take in the beauty right from the comfort of your very own car! What surprised me is how little there is of guard rails and other safety what-nots to keep the curiously overwhelmed folks (like my husband & I) safe from an early meeting with our maker. Alas - this wouldn't be a bad place to have that meeting. This painting was done on Claussen's #66 landscape oil panel. I'm still messing around with which surface I like the best. This one is quite slick, and requires much more delicate knife to surface contact for best paint application. I have to be pretty decisive in planning the next stroke because I don't want to have to noodle it after it's placed. Pock and pucker marks are bound to appear if you have to get into the noodle. And I soooo can't stand them. It's a pet peeve of mine.

"Clouds of July" by Sally Shisler $75

"Clouds of July" (4x4")-201060
Clouds are hard, hard & hard with a palette knife! I really must devote an entire week to studying them more closely. There are so many subtle color shifts in them, and of course, they really aren't quite white. I do suspect the age old problem of painting what I think they look like - you know, painting a symbol of them (like we do when we draw a smiley face) instead of painting what's really there. But I did try to stick to value relationships that hopefully read fairly successfully.

"Bald Mountain Sunset" by Sally Shisler $75

"Bald Mountain Sunset" (4x4")-201059 $75
The simple shapes of this mountain and lake scene lent themselves to a quick study of the colors and values seen during the elusive time of day when the sun is setting quickly. I chose to capture the fleeting scene basically with 2 values of each hue; blue & orange. This is one of those paintings that needs the support of a descriptive title if my goal is to have the viewer make out what's there. I guess most of my paintings are that way anyway. Some more abstract than others. But nature is always the inspiration. You will note that I am still fussing around with blog design here. Still looking for input, and I really appreciate the comments to the design I tried yesterday! You were all correct - it was too confining, too busy & really not at all related to my artwork. I like today's design trial, but I could do without the birds in the upper right. Anyone have clues as to how to change that?

"Rutherfordton County" (10x8")-201058
I must first thank all of you who have been (and now are) following my work and leaving such wonderful commentary! It's an honor to have talented folks like you take an interest in my paintings. As simple as it looks, today's piece was quite a mind twist in it's process. I really wanted to combine all of what I felt were successful elements of the recent days' paintings into this one. I thought I had it finished at one point with my trademark suggestion of a path/road/trail winding it's way from foreground to back. But I realized that my eye kept bouncing up and down like a ping pong ball from ground to sky and back. So I went ahead and painted over it with very thick paint. I'm not really too sure that the cows are reading, but as an abstractish design element, I like them.

"Little House on Mount Young" $75

"Little House on Mount Young" (4x4")-201057
I assume it's OK to use artistic license by renaming 'Young Mountain', 'Mount Young'. During our NC adventure, we spent an afternoon exploring some of the more remote mountain roads. Winding our way up towards the top of this mountain, we hoped to find a little less civilization. On the way we passed this charming little house that belonged to a little old lady who clearly spends her afternoons rocking out on the front porch. Doors and windows wide open letting nature breath life into the stuffy insides. It wasn't far past her house that we did reach remoteness of the creepiest sort, and soon decided we might be a little too far in to be safely riding around like the tourists we were in our Toyota minivan. Love, love, LOVE white cows in green pastures! I'm aware that the subject matter can be a bit kitschy (did I spell that right?), but who can resist it? In a way, this could be a companion piece to a painting I did earlier this year, "Clyde's Cattle". Though it's much smaller, and much more colorful. I do love the challenge of putting in just enough information to reveal the subject, but not so much that the subject dies in detail. There's so often such a fine line with this, but the last few paintings I've posted are really working for me.

"A Sparkle in the Hills" by Sally Shisler

"A Sparkle in the Hills" (4x4")-201055
The blues AND the greens.... and the spark of a life being lived in the mountains. One of my favorite past times is making up stories about someone else's life. I found it much easier to entertain myself with this out there in the countryside. Probably because there wasn't a heap of people packed in like sardines. The inspiration for this painting was so far in the distance; just a tiny speck of light that appeared to be hitting the edge of a rooftop - probably that of an old farming family. Not to cut you off there, but right now I had a more important thing to write about. I'm sure many or even most of you know who Leslie Saeta and Dreama Tolle Perry are. OK - if not, and you are a bloggin' artist, you MUST check out their new venture, ARTISTS HELPING ARTISTS. I just became aware of their blog radio show a few days ago, and am just bowled over at their knowledge, talent & generousity with their time. These are two very gifted ladies who apparently never, ever sleep! It's a must see & hear!

Blue Cypress Sunset, sequence of painting, by Judy Batterson

This is the fifth photo in a sequence of six showing a painting from start to finish. The farthest part of the painting is done, so now it's time for the foreground. This is the start of the large cypress trees in Blue Cypress Lake. From the viewer's perspective, only the dark sides of the trees can be seen when looking at the sun. The shadowy darks are not painted in black but done in a mixture of burnt umber and ultramarine with variations of added oil colors. www.judybatterson.com

"Summer Storm Approaching" by Maryanne Jacobsen

"Summer Storm Approaching", 12x9, oil on Raymar panel- $99, by Maryanne Jacobsen

We've seen a lot of these kind of skies lately. The clouds whip up and stuff starts blowing around. Then the sky gets dark and darker. That's when it's time to seek shelter or bite the dust!

Daily Painting 1099 Moonlight Bauhinia Orchids

"Lake Lure" by Sally Shisler

"Foothills" (4x4")-201054
Ahhhh - the stunning blue ridges of northwestern North Carolina. It's official - I want to live there someday! The colors are different for me since I don't typically use much blue in my work - except for skies. I simply could not stop voicing my delight with the area. My poor husband had to hear it over, and over, and over again...it's so beautiful, so beautiful, stunning, beautiful.... Not being able to find a satisfying way to express my over the top awe of god's wonderful work. It was spectacular!
