Botanical Fine Art Painting, Nature, "ATALA BUTTERFLY AND COONTIE" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Atala Butterfly, Eumaeus atala, once thought to be extinct, is native to Florida. The host plant is the Florida coontie (Zamia floridana), which is a cycad, or "living fossil," The Atala can tolerate the natural toxins in coonties and uses the accumulated toxins and its brilliant coloration as a defense against bird predators. The female lays her eggs, five to fifteen, usually, on coontie stalks The butterfly emerges in the early morning, courts and mates in the late afternoon, and dies within ten days.

This print is an Artist's Proof of an Intaglio Plate. I drew the image of the iguana and butterfly onto the copper plate with a sharp stylus and then placed it in a vat of acid to further etch the image deeper into the plate. It was hand inked and pulled through a traditional press, also by hand.

A piece of a tropical sea life, this fused glass piece imitates the coral which can be found on the bottom of an inlet bay. The turquoise glass embraces the yellow interior and stands 15 inches tall in the metal holder which is included in the price. Purple is my favorite color. When I saw this beautiful double trumpet Datura I knew I would have to have it in my garden! Every year it grows and drops its seeds. Any burst of cold weather in Florida will kill the plant but the wonderful seed heads burst open and the plant rejuvenates itself. It is breath taking and easy to grow!

A coral sculpture of fused glass- the background color is a mixture of yellows and oranges- major colors are reds and greens/ together they represent what could possibly be seen on the bottom of a tropical sea bed.
