Late Morning on the Beach by Sally Shisler

Late Morning on the Beach, 4x4"- 201401,  SOLD

A full 3 months into 2014!  How many false re-starts have I had here over the many years?  Much has really changed this year - life changing kind of change.  My dear mother passed early in January, with family right there by her side. She lived to be a full 89 years old, and after her graceful, courageous, beautiful entrance into the life hereafter,  I'm feeling a little left behind, somewhat empty-handed.  Full on into the grief, actually : )  Now I am 47 yrs young, with new chapters beginning.  Mid-life that I must grab by the horns and really do some selfish, but careful, self-seeking.  Expect to see a lot more of my paintings around these halls!
Although this painting might look simple, it was really elusive and difficult to achieve just the right sense of lighting.  If you can believe it - I hung on through 4 tries.  This is not a Potthast study, rather my own reference embellished with a few details that I learned during the months of studies I did a while back.  Most difficult was trying to get the girls' legs and feet in just the right placement, shape and reflected light in order to manage the illusion of which leg is leading and which is following.
Unless otherwise noted, listed prices are offered to my subscribed blog members. If you are interested in purchasing a painting, but are not yet subscribed, simply enter your email address in the join box on my home page. As a subscriber you will receive special values on your purchases and periodic promotions will give you the opportunity to enjoy my paintings in real life at even more affordable prices!

Blue Pots, 8x6 Original Oil Painting by Carmen Beecher

$99, Click to Purchase
I love the colors of Mexico. This is Number Five in my series of paintings of San Miguel de Allende, and it almost has a Florida Gators orange-and-blue look (but not quite). Spanish style houses are my favorites, especially if they have beautiful courtyards. In San Miguel there are no front yards or sweeping lawns, but the casas' openness and courtyards make it feel as if you are very comfortably living outdoors.

Sunflower, 8x10 Original Oil Daily Painting by Carmen Beecher

$99, Click to Purchase
I have finished up a couple of still life paintings that I did in the Qiang Huang workshop last month. I hated to stop my San Miguel series, but just didn't have the time to start anything new today. I will start it up again next week.

My new exercise program is Weedobics. I went into my yard and it's a jungle out there. Weedobics consists of bend, pull weed, discard, and repeat until exhausted or weeds are gone, whichever comes first. I am working my way gradually around the property. It's Florida, so by the time I get to the end it will be time to start at the beginning again.

It seems the longer this winter drags on, the more I want to paint flowers...especially orange and yellow flowers! Have heart, winter will soon disappear!

It is already spring here in Florida.  Yesterday I went to Sebastian Inlet State Park for a little summer jump start.

To finish off the day, we had lunch on a big deck at Sebastian Beach Inn, only steps away from the waves.  P*E*R*F*E*C*T

Enjoy the day....spring will soon be here, and don't forget to pin my flower painting!

Tiny Dancer, 8x10 Oil on Canvas, Figurative Painting by Carmen Beecher

$199.00, Click to Purchase
While in San Miguel de Allende I got to witness a big Aztec festival, with scores of people in bright costumes and huge feather headdresses. They were dancing in the streets, celebrating their conversion to Christianity. So many people dancing in unison, wearing bright colors and glittering outfits presented quite a wonderful sight, but this little girl was my favorite, trying to keep up with the grownups.

Here are some of the adults in their costumes. I was so lucky to be town that day!

San Miguel Morning, 10x8 Original Oil Daily Painting by Carmen Beecher

This is the sight that greeted me on our first morning in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The little bird posed obligingly on top of the dome. Bougainvilleas bloom profusely there, and there were many flowers I didn't recognize.

One night we went to Mi Casa, and heard incredible music; it was so good that there was no conversation or clanking glasses. The violin practically wept with the sound of moving Argentine music. It was worth the trip to hear something so profoundly beautiful.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "VIEW FROM FT PULASKI" by Carol Schiff, 6X8, OIL SOLD

Fort Pulaski was prepared for a possible infantry attack. However, Fort Pulaski never endured a direct land assault. With 36 guns, including the new James Rifled Cannon and Parrott rifles, Union troops began a long sustained bombardment of Fort Pulaski. The rifled projectiles could be accurately fired farther (4–5 miles) than the larger and heavier smoothbore cannonballs. Within 30 hours, the new rifled cannon had breached one of the fort's corner walls. Shells now passed through the fort dangerously close to the Fort's main powder magazine. Reluctantly, Colonel Olmstead surrendered the fort. Only one Confederate soldier and one Union soldier were injured in the attack.
Within six weeks of the surrender, Union forces repaired the Fort and all shipping in and out of Savannah ceased. The loss of Savannah as a viable Confederate port crippled the Southern war effort. With the Fort securely in Union control, General David Hunter, commander of the Union garrison issued General Order Number Eleven, which stated that all slaves in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina were now free. President Abraham Lincoln quickly rescinded the order, but later issued his own Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. At this time, Fort Pulaski was made a final destination on the Underground Railroad as slaves throughout the area were freed upon arrival on Cockspur Island.

Entrance to Fort Pulaski.
The garrison of Union soldiers reached 600 during the initial occupation, but as the War dragged on it became obvious the Southern forces would not be able to retake the Fort. The garrison was later reduced to around 250. Late in the War the Fort would be made into a prison for a group of captured Confederate officers known as "The Immortal Six Hundred." Thirteen of these men would die at the Fort. After the War ended Fort Pulaski continued as a military and political prison for a short while. It would house a Confederate Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of War, Assistant Secretary of War as well as three state governors, a senator and the man who had commanded the Fort after it had been taken by the South.

This was the view seen  as the confederate soldiers tried in vain to defend their fort.  There was never another brick fort built after this defeat.

Storms can be very scary...when you are driving, when the sky is full of lightening, when the wind gets crazy, when that loud house-shaking thunder fills the air.

I liked the fresh brushwork and the abstract shapes in this painting

I like painting flowers because I love the vibrant colors and I can make the shapes whatever I want them to be.  Most of my flower paintings are free of detail and stress.  I almost feel like I am playing when I paint them.  The next time you are close to tearing your hair out, I highly recommend, step back and take a deep breath.....and work on a flower painting!
