The Mourning Cloak Butterfly is also known as Nymphalis antiopa. It is one of the first butterflies to emerge in the spring. The Mourning cloak overwinters in the butterfly stage which is very unusual for an adult. They spend the winter frozen in "cryo-preservation" in tree cavities, beneath loose tree bark or in unheated buildings. When the temperatures start to thaw the Mourning Cloak butterfly reawakens and is one of the first signs of spring.
