Wildlife Art Insect, Nature, Butterfly "PEACOCK BUTTERFLY" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Peacock Butterfly is common in Europe and is easily identified by the large eyespots on the hind wings. The eyespots are designed to startle or confuse would be predators into thinking it is a much larger animal. If the predator does take a bite, it is usually directed towards the eyespot. The delicate wings may tear or get damaged during the attack but it allows the butterfly to break free and flee for its life.

Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. The original has been sold but is available in 3 sizes of fine art reproduction canvas prints. Please look through the rest of the gallery to see other images from the series. The Zebra Swallowtail, Eurytides marcellus has triangular wings with long tails. It has distinctive black and white markings on its wings and some small red and blue markings on both bottom corners of the wings. There are two seasonal forms. Spring forms have more white and have small black tails with white tips. Summer forms have more black and have longer tails with more white in them. This butterfly uses the PawPaw trees as its host plant.

The Madagascan Sunset Moth looks like a butterfly because of its beautiful iridescent colors but it is classified in the scientific world as a moth. This unique colorful beetle is done on coquille board. The surface of the paper has raised bumps and it easily creates a stippled appearance. It was fun to work on the paper and create the variations of iridescent colors as it shimmers across the page.

There is nothing that captures my eye than a scampering iridescent beetle across the forest floor. This is one of the largest ground beetles in the USA that is iridescent...It is called the Fiery Searcher AKA....Caterpillar Hunter! As it's name implies it feasts on caterpillars. This painting combines, colored pencil and watercolor pencils. It is part of my online class- Experimenting with Colored Pencils.

Exhibitions- Awards- Cataloged – Incheon International Marine Exhibition 2019- South Korea Exhibited, published, and cataloged- Gogyoshi Art Project International Non-profit. The flowing movement using a variety of techniques by combining mediums resins and inks allows recognizable images to emerge and reveal themselves. Extensive traveling on water inspired me to create art that demonstrates the free feeling that is the result when different forceful waters converge. Intrigued that they always calm, blending into the rhythm of the ocean. I am honored to belong to groups of colleagues that also care deeply about humanitarian and global environmental issues.

Gyre is a circular or spiral motion or form, especially a circular ocean current that gathers together items and forms massive garbage islands. These islands of pollution are already inhabited by plants and animals. The artists asks you, “Will these islands of pollutants be the next homes for humans”? Genetic Gyre is one in a series of Gyre environmental art pieces intended to draw attention to worthy and most political issue for man kind. The intention of this artist is to team with a curator to do a public awareness exhibition on this most important issue of clean oceans for all.
