Earlier this year, at one of my Go Big Go Bold abstract painting workshops in Clearwater, Florida, I started working on a demo for the class. I am an intuitive painter, so sometimes I don't know what direction the painting will lead. This particular painting started out as an abstract but as I worked, it decided that it really wanted to be a floral. Funny how that happens! Life is like that too. We've all heard the old John Steinbeck expression, paraphrased here as "The best-laid plans of mice and men / Often go awry". Well, I don't think this painting went "awry" at all but was a happy surprise for me, and for my class. The lesson is that we have to leave ourselves open to possibilities that life offers to us. That's one of the great things about painting intuitively...you never know where you'll end up, but the "trip" is sure a lot of fun!

This large 30"x30" painting on textured canvas is currently represented by the

Florida Artists Gallery in Floral City, Florida.

The canvas wraps around the sides of the 1.5" bars and does not need to be framed. The sides are painted in a rich, shimmery Micaceous Iron Oxide. Lilypad Pond

We live in an area with lots of lakes and ponds. Just behind our home is a small pond that is covered with lilypads. I love walking along the edge of the pond to look at the great variety of plants that grow in or near water. The lilypads are especially interesting. Their leaves float on the surface of the water and catch the sunlight, reflecting it back in varying shades of color. Painting intuitively allows images that are secretly stored away in my mind to emerge and express themselves in my work.

I did not intend for the recent news of devastating wildfires in Tennessee to be the inspiration for this painting. But, as I worked on developing this painting, this is what emerged. I'm sure that the news of the conflagration penetrated my psyche and expressed itself in this painting. My thoughts and prayers are with all who were affected by this terrible event.

This original abstract painting on watercolor paper is inspired by a family friend's pond in the Adirondack mountains. In the fall, when the first warning of winter turned the leaves into a glorious display of color, the pond mirrored the kaleidoscopic panorama.

"Mac's Pond" is heavily textured, revealing subtle undertones that are not visible in this image.
The painting is bordered by 2" of white watercolor paper. It is ready to be matted and framed or simply "floated" to show the deckle on all four sides.

In my last blog I wrote about the chaos at our house due to remodeling the master bath and painting the inside and outside of our home. Well, we're finally starting to see the end of the tunnel as the painters finish up their work. But, all this has taken a toll on me, my hubby and even our 2 cats! Poor girls keep running from one corner of the house to the other, trying to find a safe haven. I sometimes wish I could hide under a bed with them too! It's been well over a month since all this turmoil began, but in the end, it will be worth it.

I'm looking forward to getting back into my studio again. So many new ideas are swirling around in my head, just waiting to bust loose. Have you ever had times when your creativity was just waiting to explode but couldn't because of so many other priorities in your life? I guess we've all been through those times when we've had to put aside our own desires in order to take care of other things that seemed more important at the time.
