Marsh Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "North Florida Marsh" by Carol Schiff, 6x8 Original Oil
This marsh landscape painting is inspired by a trip to Fernandina Beach. I was captivated by the autumn colors of the marshes.
Yes, we do have fall color in Florida.....you just have to look a little harder to find it.
It may not be on the trees, and it may not be in October. I was just noticing how beautiful the red maple trees in our yard looked last week. The leaves were a lovely burgundy color.....perfect during the Christmas season. Of course, we don't have thousands of trees in glorious color like you will find in the North, but I like to think the beaches and mild winter weather make up for it. :)

Story of a commission
When I work on a painting commission, it is always with a mix of excitement and fear. Will I produce the painting my client is expecting?
Recently I recieved a request for a 30x40" commission. The client had already purchased a small 8x10" and wanted a similar scene. She especially liked the sky.
I painted a small study of what I thought the client was asking for....focus on the sky and a more interesting marsh area.
Nix! The sky is much to gaudy for the client, and could I please add some birds.
This had a better reception, but perhaps a few more herons?
Here we are getting closer, but the client felt the flying heron was too distracting to the sunset.
I photo shopped the offending bird out of the composition and got the go ahead! This is the completed 30x40" canvas which the client is totally happy with.
Most clients have sent me a photo image of exactly the scene they are looking for. I found this trial and error system has worked well for me when there is no photo image to work from.
I would love to hear how others handle this situation.

Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Art, "Into the Sunset" , 6x8" Oil
This painting was a real experiment for me. I wanted to paint a sunset, wildlife and marsh, but could not find a reference image that I liked.
Then I remebered a workshop I took, many years ago from Fritz vanEeden. Fritz is an artist of international aclaim. Among his many talents is his ability to paint images that he pulled from his mind's eye.
I gave it a try!
I started with the direction of the sky and clouds and then laid in the wetlands below.
I have to admit, I did use a photo reference for the heron. I just could not visualize all those body parts!
All in all, I was happy the day's efforts, and hopefully, this technique will come in handy in the future.

Marsh Painting, Small Oil Painting, "North Florida Marsh" by Carol Schiff, 6x6x1.5"
Most of my paintings are done from photo references, but sometimes I like to work from memory. This little marsh painting is one of the memories.
I was thinking of the beautiful marshes around Jacksonville, FL and southern Georgia when I painted this. We travel the route often and I am always frustrated because I cannot get a decent image of the scene when buzzing down the interstate at 70 MPH.
It was interesting trying to work out direction of sunlight etc, but also very freeing. I will be doing this more often.
