Serene Sunset, Florida Oil Landscape of Palm Islands by Judy Batterson
Islands of palms, trees, and mangroves cast shadows in the water as the sun sets. The clouds break the sun into shades of yellow, yellow-orange, orange, and rose while being reflected in the water. A Florida coastal sunset, alive with changing colors, can take your breath away. This is the Florida that the eco-minded seek, usually in kayaks and small boats. Moving in the still water between the islands, one can see wildlife of the air and water. Watching the sunset is a bonus. 16 x 20" Original Oil on canvas.

"Ribbons, Tulle and Giggles"-16x12, oil on boardWhen I had my dance school and company, we performed Swan Lake a couple of times over the years. I made certain that even the little ones had a spot in the production. The painting above was inspired by a photo that I took at dress rehearsal, before our first "Swan Lake" production. The kids were very excited, what with all their beautiful new costumes and ribbons and friendships.
In this photo they seem to have hatched some sort of pact or plan. Hard to know what they were up to, but they certainly looked beautiful!

Daily Painting 1261 Summer Colors Plein Air Alla Prima
I painted this at Heathcote Botanical gardens here in Fort Pierce. Its oil painted on varnished plywood, you can see the wood grain, it shows up a bit too much to me in the photo, I think the painting looks much better in person. Not too long after I painted it, I had to pack up and go home, looked like rain and it was getting very dark out. Nice breezy day before that though, not too hot. $100.http://lorisart.blogspot.com

Perhaps another painting that looks fairly simple. And actually, the execution was quite straightforward. It's the paint mixing, almost always the painting mixing, that takes the cake for hard work. The palette for this took about 40 minutes to mix. Can you guess how many separate paint piles I ended up with? Think I'll let you take a crack at it. Just for grins. I did use every single one of them, and in the end had to mix 2 more to get the hues I needed. What I loved about this image was the shocking, eyeball aching, hot white sand! Always a pleasure to paint, but trickier than it seems. I've learned so much from these studies, and it's obvious that the appeal of Mr. Potthast's work is timeless. As I said a few posts ago, I do hope that I've brought something new to the table. It's been a worthy passage for me personally, and I'm very excited to bring the lessons into my own creative process - though I fear I won't be finding many beach-goers in turn of the century clothes : )

Aye yi yi.... This piece looks deceivingly simple; and yet I spent more time finagling (sp?) the tight light value and color ranges. It was kind of like a push and shove couple of hours. What it did for me was (once and again) confirm that it's imperative to have my paint mixes completely worked out and ready to go ahead of time. I spent a lot of time trying to exact the values and temperatures of the reflected light that's bouncing into the face and folds of the dress. Perhaps areas that are inherently too small to worry about messing with. Sometimes I've gotten lucky and with a light, quick flick of my wrist I've been able to pull just the right amount of paint into an area that needs lifting or downplay. But it's tricky, and certainly doesn't follow the early course of my palette knife methods! I'd say it falls into the noodling category ..... uh oh....

The Little Book of Living Prayers by Doris M. Matthews has just been published! My painting "Garden of Eden" is the cover. Author Doris has prayers for people from all walks of life and in every sort of need. Truly inspirational words about Christ's love and healing power!
Doris commissioned me for the cover painting. I chose Eden, the garden of God, because it is full of symbolism. The description is in Genesis 2. Abundant fruit bearing and beautiful trees grew there while a stream watered the Garden. Archeologists believe that the date palm was one of the first trees in the Garden. It was a place of peace and serenity. This is my glimpse into the Garden of Eden. May this picture bring peace to those who view it, especially as they read the prayers.
The book of prayers is now available from The Healing Ministry at The Glennon House in Winter Park Florida for $6 (or $7, if mailed.) More information through All Saints Episcopal Church in Winter Park, Florida.
It was a blessing to be a part of this year long project.

I am definitely not used to working on the same painting for days on end! I am more of an alla prima painter, but this one was hard for me to paint for some reason. Perhaps because it was actually a self-portrait, with yours truly becoming the subject of my painting.
Self-portraits are tricky. One always wants to bring out the best in one’s own appearance while still staying true to the design and subject matter! Sigh.
“Paint what you see!”
That’s what all the experts say, and since I have been reading Richard Schmidt’s wonderful book, “Alla Prima” since I came back from the Portrait Society of America’s conference last week, I decided to take his advice to heart.
Unfortunately, I have very bad eyesight and so painting what I see is not always very clear for either me or the viewer. I try not to think about my eyesight very much or I’ll get depressed.
I feel very grateful that I have had so many wonderful opportunities to engage my passions over the years. Just recently, in addition to receiving a fabulous scholarship to attend the PSOA conference in Atlanta, I also won a first place ribbon last month in an exhibit, and just received representation at the drop dead beautiful Gallerie Unique in the exclusive Bell Tower Mall! So I am definitely not complaining!
My husband snapped this photo of me in our garden a few weeks ago. Actually he snapped a number of photos of me in the garden that day. His photos that day proved to be paint worthy.
I painted this little guy quickly- without thinking too much about the result. In the end, I loved the expressive result and the painting was quickly acquired by a repeat collector. So I decided to try a different pose from the same batch of photos.
This one I’m much less sure of. In wanting to make it Right, perhaps I made it Wrong.
At any rate, I may work on it some more in upcoming days , or maybe I won’t. At any rate, it is not for sale at this time, but please tell me what you think about it!
