Painting on Sale | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Winter Glory by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Landscape

Today, I am offering one of my favorite daily paintings at a reduced price.  This small oil painting was painted after a winter trip to the mountains of North Carolina.  I found these beautiful red berries in the trees.  I think it has a very sweet Christmas feel, but can be hung all year long.  The perfect gift for the art lover on your list!

A Little Pop of Red by Sally Shisler

As I've said before, it's always best to get your thoughts down immediately after finishing a painting.  Just as in the painting process itself, going back to rekindle is hard to do. This painting was finished on Sunday, so we're talking 2 days later here.  My goal was to bring lots of color variety into this 'say cheese' painting. (Cheese as in smile for the camera...not cheese as in cheesy painting; I hope.) Before I write the rest of this post, I need to say that this painting seems a little bit cattywampus, but I still am very happy with it : )
If you are looking at a good deal of classical painting, you will notice that painting a smile seems to be a questionable decision. I guess because it doesn't seem natural for a model to pose that way for an extended period?  Or because the look just isn't as languid? I think it's hardest to paint a face that is looking straight at you. Getting the symmetry is difficult to do without creating an overworked look.  Getting an eyeball placed into the skull accurately is hard enough to do, but then achieving a graceful passage of skin tissue over the sockets and eyeball is really a killer. When you get caught up in what you think you know about eyes vs. what you are actually seeing, you are destined for a struggle. With palette knife especially because in trying to achieve a fresh, pure stroke AND getting it placed accurately, you are likely to face a downright wrestling match.  Then you have the nostrils and the flares that define the edges of the nose around them. And underneath that is the pair of gentle slopes and a valley that lie above the upper lip.  Lips should be easy, but they are elusive too. There is the jawline and another slope of skin tissue that joins with the neck, which is positioned center and toward the back. I'll stop there, except to say that if all else fails, there is always hair that can be tousled around; flipped out, or under; placed over a bad eye - you get the idea.  Putting it all together is a trick. It's worth the time to really study anatomical structure from all angles. Just do it!

Wildlife Painting, Bird Painting, Daily Painting, "Great Blue Heron" by Carol Schiff, 8x6" Oil

It gets tricky trying to photograph wildlife.  This time I got lucky.  This Great Blue Heron was very calm as I walked very close to him and started clicking away.  He had his eye on the fishermen's catch and was willing to put up with me.

I am sorry I could not get a better image of this piece.  The painting is still wet, so I got glare on the bird and the rich colors and values are not showing as well as they should.  I have been working hard on color interaction and am pleased with the color on this work.

The holiday season is officially starting today, so I want to tell you a little about our painting group's art sale which is coming up soon.

This year we are coming out of my garage and also expanding the sale to two days, Friday December 5th and Saturday the 6th.  We are excited to announce that the sale will take place at Ralph's Art Supply on Highland Ave. in Eau Gallie Art District.  We will have our usual great prices on original art, as well as some crafty pieces.

Donna Vines and I have been making these great candy cane vases (flowers not included)  and we will have ornaments and other creative items as well. Contact me here to place your early order.....and yes, we can ship.

Happy shopping today!

Daily Painting, Seascape Painting, 6x12" The Sea by Carol Schiff SOLD

If you follow my daily painting blog, you know I visit the ocean on a regular basis

SOLD

I am always amazed at the changes of color I find in the waves.

I never know which kind of sea I will find when I go to the beach.  Smooth and gentle, crazy and wild, dull or sparkling.  Hmmmmm, much the same as my painting experiences.  Smooth and everything drops into place like magic, frustrating or total failure when I feel like it is the very first time I picked up a brush, fresh and clean or the dreaded OVERWORKED!

Happy Painting!

Still Life Daily Oil Painting "Le Belle Poivron Rouge", 6x8"

I find I have missed painting still life, so it has been fun catching up on it over the last week.

If I could just stop sleeping, I would have an additional 5 or 6 hours a day to paint.

Maybe then I would have enough time to paint both my still life and my landscapes.....but what about the abstract/mixed media  I also want to try?  Maybe I better work on growing another set of arms instead!

Life is hard when you're retired!!

Small Seascape, Ocean Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Sunrise", 6x8 Oil, SOLD

Although I do not live on the beach, I am very close, so it is easy to jump in my car with a cup of coffee and a camera.  That is just what I did on this morning.

SOLD

It is my favorite time of day at the beach.  Very few people, maybe an occasional fisherman, just me and the surf and the birds.  The surf is usually quiet, as though it is still sleeping too, and the birds are very busy, running around looking for breakfast.

Of course, when the sun finally breaks over the horizon, it is glorious.

I hope that you will remember this post on your next vacation to the sea, and you will take the opportunity to share a very special moment with nature.  I know you will not regret it!

Marsh Landscape, Palette Knife Painting, COLORS OF THE MARSH 8x8x1.5" oil

The sun is quickly sinking below the horizon and within minutes the colors of the marsh will disappear.

My goal here was to suggest the beauty and colors of the marsh in late summer.  I wanted to use plenty of texture and thick paint to do so.

I really love the gallery wrap canvases from "The Edge".  I like the chunky shape of this small 8x8" with the 1.5" depth that gives this small painting more presence.

Thanks for reading my blog today :)

1587 Kapok Tree at the Causeway Park Plein Air Alla Prima

The kapok trees are in full bloom at the Causeway Park here in Ft. Pierce.  I had fun painting here today, this is the smaller tree, there is a really big one too.  I think its so cool that they bloom in November. The sky was totally overcast when I got there, then it cleared with almost no clouds.  Its been clearing and clouding all day.

Went to see the aquariums at the Smithsonian there, they are very interesting as always with lots of nice fish and other creatures.

Painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite $250.

Small Floral Still Life | Flower Painting | Daily Painting | Rose Bush and Reflection by Carol Schiff | SOLD

I am continuing on with my series of small floral still life paintings in oil.  They are just too much fun to stop!  This is one of my all time favorite daily paintings.

SOLD

Of course, this painting has all my favorite colors....the rose, purple, turquoise, green and yellow seem to sing.

This little blossom makes the composition special.

When I first started painting, I worked in pastel for eight years, before moving on to oil.  One of my favorite pastels was a painting I did from the same photograph.

This painting is 20x25"....much larger and still one of my all time favorites.  I must say though, that I prefer the new version over this.

Which do you prefer?
