Original Florida Coastal Landscape Red Cottage Painting "Off the Beaten Path" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

FRESH OFF THE EASEL

Okay I have to admit it!! If I see an interesting dirt road I feel compelled to investigate. Of course if there is a no trespassing sign with a picture of a gun.. I'll move on. Seeing a flicker of a bright melon orange colored cottage through the trees peeked my interest. It sat next to a thatch roofed gazebo. Beyond was an area untouched and full of tropical vegetation.
Who lives in this interesting cottage?

I tried to keep that laid back feel in the painting too, using both a brush and a palette knife.

Then, I brought it back to Florida, to remind me to relax and chill now and then.

Thanks for reading my blog today.  I hope you get to "chill" a little too.

Tropical Landscape Art, Florida Painting, Florida Morning" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil Landscape

I work up eary, grabbed a cup of coffee and my camera, and headed to Florida's intracoastal waterway.  In our area, it is the Indian River, and I arrived there just in time to see the sun break over the horizon.

When I had finished my photos, I drank my coffee and enjoyed that wonderful early morning atmosphere.  You know the one, where it seems that only you and maybe a few birds are up and around.  It is so still, the birds are starting to feed, and a small pod of dolphins are fishing off shore.  Heaven!

I am often asked where I find my small frames.  The answer is my favorite framer.  Apparently it is standard procedure for framers to throw away the end pieces of moldings.  My framer, who has a large following of artists, started using those end pieces to make  up small standard sized frames.  He always has a good selection and sells them for next to nothing.  Perfect for starving artists!

If you are in Melbourne, FL area, his store is Ridley's Frames on Palm Bay Road and Troutman Ave. in Palm Bay.  Stop in and load up on his treasures and tell him I sent you in :)

Happy Day!

Original Impressionism Landscape Painting by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

Deep In The Pines is a pastel. It was done en plein air at a Southwest Florida Preserve. I love the strength of a pine tree, they stand tall and reach for the sky. What a way to live!

I like to show my small paintings in a black frame.  I think it shows most paintings well and really help the colors to pop.  Frames should accentuate the painting, but distract from it.

Florida Landscape, Daily Painting, "Sunlit Plams" by Carol Schiff, 10x8x.75" Oil SOLD

This is a scene I see everyday in Florida.  When the sun is low in the sky, the entire landscape is bathed in golden light.  An  uninteresting sight, like this clump of palm trees, takes center stage.

SOLD

This is just one of the perks that art has brought to my life.....the ability to really see....to take notice of the beauty that surrounds me.  Not just the obvious like a glowing sunset or a beautiful flower garden, but the magic that can happen to a clump of palm trees that I have walked by day after day.

Florida Landscape | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | Palm Grove by Carol Schiff | 8x6" Oil | SOLD

I was on a photo shoot one late afternoon, walking though wetlands and knee high grasses.  I was getting a little anxious as the wildlife and creepy crawlies get more active as the sun goes down.  When I came home, I found several reference photos that I was interested in painting, which made it all worth while.

I liked the way the early evening light was hitting these palms, turning them from gray to gold.  This is a little study for a much larger piece that I am interested in trying.  Hopefully, I can get to it soon.

Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Small Floral Still Life, "Garden Treasures" , 8x10 Still Life

I have been doing lots of florals lately.  It seems I cycle in my work, doing several abstracts, or seascapes or landscapes, until, finally, something else inspires me and I move to another subject.  Probably, because of spring and summer, flowers have my attention now.

Last winter, we purchased a vacation condo in Waynesville, NC, smack in the middle of the Smoky Mountains.  When we returned in the spring, imagine my surprise, to find we had also acquired a flourishing flower garden.  I love flowers, but I did not imagine my time there being spent pulling weeds and deadheading!  As my husband says, "it is what it is" so when we return there soon, gardening tools will be included in our luggage.

The up side of the story, is the pleasure I get from the gorgeous flowers.  Each time we visit, a new surprise awaits.  We have ferns and dogwood, Japanese maple, lily, bleeding heart  and roses.  I cannot wait to see what will be in bloom on my next trip.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Rose Still Life, Small Floral Still Life, "Mother's Rose" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil

On this small oil painting, I tried to capture the beauty and feel of this lovely flower, without being too worried about duplicating the actual image. I painted with a knife and worked hard to keep my colors clean and my strokes pure. The knife has left a lot of texture to the piece that makes you want to reach out a touch it. I think it has a wild feel, which is just what I was working towards. The colors of pinks, purples and greens work well together with a touch of orange.

I thoroughly  enjoyed this painting, so much so, that I painted a second in the same manner.  I will post the second painting next week.  I plan to try more of the same in the future.
