"Skinny Dipping", II by Sally Shisler

"Skinny Dipping", II
See "Skinny Dipping, I" below to complete the pair!
(4x4") - 201210
This painting completes a pair - see the first Skinny Dipping a few posts down.  It's a trick trying to render a nude figure whilst maintaining a pure quality.  Nothing wrong with a little seduction. But I feel that an image with even the slightest bit of 'sexy' takes too much away from the virtues of the painting in and of itself. The smallest twist in the stance of the figure can make a huge difference. Hips, in particular, and shoulders too.  I'm not convinced that I didn't avoid it, but I did give it a try.

"Walking in the Hills", by Sally Shisler

"Walking in the Hills" after Edward Henry Potthast
(4x4") - 201209
I came across a few more of Potthast's paintings that reeled me in.  More that I had to challenge myself with.  Hats seem to be hard for me and I'm not sure why.  They're shapes are so simple. You have to remember to follow the shape of the head that's underneath - otherwise the hat can end up looking like a top hat, or a chef's hat - or just plain buffoonery. I've learned SO much from these little studies that I'm hoping to carry over into larger paintings of my own subjects.  Right now I'm working on a commission - my first attempt at translating the tiny to the huge.  I really prefer working with wet, juicy paint.  Easy to do when there's not much space to cover.  Much harder with a large piece because of the obvious additional time it takes to develop the image.  I'm going to post it when it's finished and will talk a little about the insights I've gained during the process.  Happy Memorial Day!!

Beetle, Butterfly and Backyard Flowers, Painting of Florida Flowers by Judy Batterson

"Beetle, Butterfly and Backyard Flowers"! Needed some color in my life so I cut plumbago, penta, bougainvillea and yellow daisies to bring inside....along with a beetle and butterfly! Butterflies love pentas! Painted this so I could save the vibrant colors of a Florida backyard in bloom! 11 x 14".

I think this one is finally finished!

You can scroll down on my blog http://lorisart.blogspot.com/ and see where I started this one.  There was more tweaking to do than I thought, managed to spend the whole morning on it.  Darkened her clothing, little more highlights on the jewelry, did some more work on both their eyes, noses, etc.  My husband said to finish it up, you only have five minutes of work on it.

Daily Painting 1414 Royal Poinciana in a Field oil painting

There are a lot of these trees blooming here in Fort Pierce now, we have a big one in the yard and I think it will have its best bloom ever this year.  It has lots of flowers and many buds.  Its one of my favorite trees, the flowers are gorgeous, like red and orange orchids.  I used mainly one of my palette knives, the painting has plenty of textures.  My painting is oil on masonite, 5 x 7 inches,

Plein Air by Jani Lori
The first time I went to Rock City Gardens, a commercial nursery, was many years ago with my Dad. He loved the different garden plants and the many unique garden pots, sculptures and fountains. He wanted to take me there because he knew I would love it too. He was right... I had no idea then that today I would be standing on one of the paths painting..

"Rosita" - Island, Boat and Tropical Water Painting by Judy Batterson

"Rosita" Pthalo blue and pthalo green make the perfect color combination to paint the shallow waters beyond the southern tip of Florida. The boats make the perspective possible while showing the persons who are island hopping. Rosita is the name of the closest boat. Inspiration for a vacation! This painting was chosen by the Casselberry Rotary Club and Caselberry Art House as the June painting published in their 2012 Calendar, featuring Florida artists. 9"H x 11"W

Daily Painting 1412 Neon Banyan

I started out with an abstract background with this one and picked out the tree trunks and branches to make a jungle forest scene.  Its 8 x 10, oil on masonite.  All brushwork for a change, no painting knife and not much texture.  I felt like doing something different for a change, it was a fun painting.  $200.

Daily Painting 1411 Serene Sands Indian River Scene

This is by the Indian River at the Old Fort Park site.  There is a stream of water that flows under Indian River Drive and goes out into the river, this is that spot.  Its interesting because you can often see large fish in the stream.  This is looking towards the bridge and downtown Fort Pierce but I went back in time before all that and left out the bridge and town.  The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite.

Lone Cypress, Coastal Oil Painting by Judy Batterson

"Lone Cypress" is probably the most painted tree on the coast of California. This painting happened because this Florida girl took a trip to Carmel and stayed on the 17 Mile Drive. I had always wanted to see this famous tree, and there is was in front of me! The high rocky coastline of the area took my breath away. And now I know why artists paint the water in the Pacific with a lot of pthalo blue...because it is that color! Amazing! This painting is a commission for a resident of the area. 8 x 10" original oil on canvas.
