Florida Hammock, a Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist
This tranquil scene of palms, mangroves and water has been chosen to be in the Orlando Magazine's Paint the Town 2014 Juried Exhibit. The cool colors have a peaceful effect. Old Florida style captured afternoon clouds over the water.

I Believe in Discovery, A Florida Coastal Landscape with Palm, Dunes, and Ocean by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist
This paintings is a compilation of what Ponce de Leon saw when he first discovered the peninsula of Florida 500 years ago. This is also part II of a complete diptych tying the sailing explorers together with the land they discovered.
Bold in color, it emphasizes the boldness of Ponce and his men. I hope this encourages others to keep Florida's natural beauty the way they found it long ago. 18x24 oil on board.

Palms Along the River, Florida Oil Landscape of St. John's River by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist
We rented a houseboat from Holly Bluff Marina near DeLand, Florida, and took it on the St. John's River for the weekend. What we found was total pristine wilderness with beautiful tall palms lining the river's edge. I took my sketchbook and paints to capture the water, birds, and trees. This painting has been chosen for the 2013
Artists Registry Exhibit which shows two works of art by 80 artists from around the state. 12x24 original oil.

Wekiva Moon, Night Florida Landscape by Judy Batterson Florida Artist
"Wekiva Moon"is a small 8x8 oil on black gallery wrapped canvas. I have several friends who live on large properties along the Wekiva River. When the moon is full, it shines like a spotlight on the land below. No urban lights diffuse it. My challenge was to capture this night scene on black canvas without any black paint!

Reeds and Red Boat, Soft Impressionistic Plein Air Painting by Judy Batterson, Florida artist
Central Florida has so many beautiful lakes. This was painted at Lake Jessamine in Orlando. Across from where I set up my easel, was a small cove where a little red rowboat was pulled up into the reeds. The early morning light made soft atmospheric blocks of color. And the lily pads made a peaceful scene. 9x12 original oil.

Palms Along the River, A Florida Oil Landscape of the St. John's River by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist
Pristine wilderness of Old Florida lines the sides of the St. John's River. As the longest river in Florida, it winds north through 12 counties. We took a houseboat into the middle basin part of the river where I was able to sketch and paint the palms, marshes and wildlife. Tall stately palms grew along the river. We anchored and woke up to a sky of light making everything lush and green against the tannic slow moving water. Old Florida is inspiration! 12"H x 24"W original oil on canvas. Price: $ 600.00

Palm Afternoon, Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson
In homage to the Florida Highwaymen! I found a scene that would be similar to what they painted. This 16 x 20
original oil captured a prominent palm along the coast of Florida. The sun was setting, the waves were lapping
and it was the end of a beautiful afternoon.

Old Florida, Framed Original Oil of Lake and Palm by Judy Batterson
Take a trip into the heart of Florida along trails next to lakes and creeks. There is dense foliage along the edge of the water. The lake reflects the blue sky and palms. Patches of sand and reeds are dotted along the water's edge. This is "Old Florida", a vast ecosystem of marshes and lakes. This is the old Florida I remember as a child when my friends and I would "go exploring" in the woods. In this painting, Florida's wild beauty translates into color and light. 8 x 10" framed original oil

Anastasia Palm, Old Florida Stately Palm Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson
On a beautiful afternoon, I set up my plein air easel in Lake Mary in front of a stately palm tree. With the sun shining on one side, the tree cast a shadow on the grass. Palms are my favorite trees because each one is so different, as if each has a different personality. This one sent out an Old Florida vibe. Tall, stately, and perfectly "coifed", the tree seemed more like a tropical sculpture. 12"H x 9"W

| 8x10 oil on linen panel Plein Air by Jani Lori The first time I went to Rock City Gardens, a commercial nursery, was many years ago with my Dad. He loved the different garden plants and the many unique garden pots, sculptures and fountains. He wanted to take me there because he knew I would love it too. He was right... I had no idea then that today I would be standing on one of the paths painting.. Painting available at http://janilori.com |

Plein Air Morning at Cypress Grove Park, Contemporary Impressionism Oil by Judy Batterson

The weather was perfect when I set up to paint in the middle of the field at Cypress Grove Park. The morning sunlight hit the large oak trees and the grass with intensity. This painting is all about the dramatic darks and lights that I saw before me. I loved mixing the oils and capturing the morning on canvas! I would call this style Contemporary Impressionism. 9 x 12 " oil on canvas.

Lake Lily Impressions, a Florida Plein Air Oil Painting by Judy Batterson

Joining with a group of plein air painters, I set up my easel on the north side of Lake Lily in Maitland, FL. It was late afternoon, so we had to capture the sun and shadows quickly. Without a lot of details, I focused on three trees across the lake. The impressions of darks and lights were extreme as the sun dropped fast. This is the resulting painting and a special memory of Lake Lily.

Tall Palm Tiny Island, Tropical Beach Art by Judy Batterson

There are many tiny islands in the Keys with teeny tiny island cottages. Although the cottage I saw was old and weathered, I painted this one with fun island colors. The entire canvas was underpainted in blue, then many layers were added until the tall palm finished the landscape. I like the way the tiny house on the tiny island gives such a contrast to the tall palm in front of it. Such a fun painting and a joy to paint! Tall and tiny and tropical! 36 x 12" Original oil on canvas.

Playful Palm, Tropical Palm Tree on Beach by Judy Batterson

This is the cutest little palm tree on the beach! The fun part is a sky full of the colors of pinks, blue, lavender, and little bits of yellow. This is a tropical scene that is happy. I had fun painting this and love the happy way people respond to it. 8x10" Oil on masonite. Framed original $325 Available at Let Us Frame It, Orlando, FL.

Poinciana and Oranges, a Florida Oil Landscape of Orange Grove, Poinciana Tree, Old Florida by Judy Batterson

A large poinciana tree is in bloom with brilliant red blossoms. Across the path is an orange grove laden with fruit. The interplay of light and shadow is shown by the sunlight on the bright colors of red, orange and green while billowing clouds stand out against a dark sky. Florida heat leads to afternoon thunderstorms, and the painting tells this story. Large and colorful, this is a painting of Florida the way it used to be and can still be found down sandy back roads. In the tradition of the Florida Highwaymen. 21x36" Original Oil on masonite.

Palms and Imagined Color
Palm Path

My first post to Daily Painters of Florida! Rainy day here, this painting was "imagined" and redesigned from a black and white photo I took at Venice Beach. Painted inside while teaching my small painting class at the Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda.
