Having set up my easel in a field in the early morning, I painted the light and shadows of the trees and flowers. It's always so beautiful to see how the sunlight can make a dramatic composition with the resulting shadows.

Plein Air Painting of Dunes
By The Dunes
Acrylic on Canvas, 20 in. x 16 in.
This was the first time that I've painted on a canvas this large during a plein air session. I usually work fairly small. I liked working bigger because I was able to paint using loose strokes with a big brush. Original paintings are available through my website at: Sharon Guy Art. Affordable prints are available at: Sharon Guy.

Reeds and Red Boat, Florida Lake Landscape by Judy Batterson

Painting en plein air, I set up in the morning on a dock jutting into Lake Jessamine. On the shoreline was a little red boat pulled up into the reeds. The morning sun made the reeds golden with light. The lily pads and small palms caught the sunlight, too. While I was painting, the waves in the lake made the dock sway constantly. Challenging to an artist! I'm going to set up on solid ground from now on!! 9 x 12" original Oil

Plein Air Morning at Cypress Grove Park, Contemporary Impressionism Oil by Judy Batterson

The weather was perfect when I set up to paint in the middle of the field at Cypress Grove Park. The morning sunlight hit the large oak trees and the grass with intensity. This painting is all about the dramatic darks and lights that I saw before me. I loved mixing the oils and capturing the morning on canvas! I would call this style Contemporary Impressionism. 9 x 12 " oil on canvas.

Key West Storm Approaching Original Oil by Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism
Original Oil painting 30 x 40 inches
Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism
This painting was done on location before a hurricane reached shore. The emotion of incrediable cloud formations and the smell of an approaching storm was overwhelming.
The location here was being scouted for an outdoor painting workshop at a later date. The majority of this was painted en plein air. Studio work was required to finish the painting due to winds that were to high to maintain the canvas stability.

Palm Afternoon, a Coastal Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

Artists have painted many scenes like this, but I tried to be different by making mine very textural. Heavy layers of paint on the palms, the sand and the seaweed give dimension to the foreground. The angle of the sun creates good tension with deep shadows in the underbrush and highlights on the tops of the palms and mangroves. Slightly impressionistic, the painting shows a natural coastal landscape. 16 x 29" oil on masonite. www,judybatterson.com

"Language Barrier", 14x18- by Maryanne Jacobsen
"Language Barrier", 14x18- $99I did this quick study last night as an experiment to see if I could paint people with a palette knife. I discovered that it was hard, but not impossible. The result is very impressionistic. I kind of like it so I'll probable do another one with even thicker paint. I've priced this very low, since it was an experimental piece and it only took me a short time to complete. So grab it if you like impressionist works that don't have a great deal of detail. (You can click on the image to see the detail a little better.)
I decided to name it "Language Barrier" because of a funny thing that happened yesterday.
I am looking after a friend's dog while they are away and yesterday when I went to their home, I let the dog out back into the fenced yard. The dog , whose name is "Sammy" could see his "friend" next door, a pit bull looking out from the sliding glass door of his home, probably wishing he could go out and play with Sammy. They started barking at each other , as is they were talking. Then a funny thing happened. I started hearing another loud strident voice coming from the pitbull's home. It sounded like a bratty little kid screaming his head off, but I know these people have no children. The racket got louder and louder and then the strange voice started whistling and heckling Sammy, who just kept barking back. I finally realized it was a cockatoo, a tropical bird which is known for its loud and rather harsh voice. I began thinking that it would be really cool if we could all talk to each other, animals and humans and birds communicating back and forth. Anyhow, that was the inspiration for this painting.

Footbridge at Gemini, sequence of 3 stages of bridge in a tropical setting by Judy Batterson

This is the second sequence in a series of three photos of the layers in this painting. After the background layers, the middle ground is painted which is the footbridge over the springs. This beautiful park, Gemini Springs, is located near DeLand, FL. There
are several footbridges where you can stand and look into the clear water bubbling up from the springs. Like Monet's bridge at Giverny, this is a picturesque landscape but with a tropical twist. www.judybatterson.com

Kiawah Island Art

Edge of the Sea, Oil on canvas, 14 in. x 11 in.
The dunes along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding Kiawah Island are a good source of interesting scenes. I was there in the winter when the sky was cloudy but the sun came out for a short time when I was looking at this view of East Beach. Kiawah Island is a great place to visit during the off-season when it is fairly quiet. The streets are named after birds, and the landscaping is perfect. Strict zoning laws create a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. In December, the shops are all decorated tastefully with lights and wreathes, and it is fun a fun place to do Christmas shopping. I hope to visit again sometime. Sharon Guy Art

Great Blue Herons

Great Blue Heron Pair, Oil on canvas, 18 in. x 14 in.
Here is a closer view of a heron pair that I have painted before. I used a loose, impressionistic style with a simple design for this one. I felt like being expressive with color to create a mood. Now I feel even more drawn to paint water birds since so many of them are in danger because of the oil spill. Sharon Guy Art.

St. Augustine- "Bottom of Bridge Street", 20x16, oil on linen
"St. Augustine, Bottom of Bridge Street"- 16x20 , oil on linenThis is a view of the doorway into the courtyard of The Sanchez House, in St. Augustine, a lovely old historic house that was built by Jose Simeon Sanchez, one of the Spanish colony of Florida's first and foremost statesmen. Crafted of coquina stone, the house hosted the prosperous and distinguished Sanchez family until the 1950's.
The gesture of the bougainvillea (which is the focal point of the painting) directs the eye towards the palm tree, which leads the eye to the little sailboat. Hence the viewer's eye is led through the composition in a circular fashion.
Bridge Street in St. Augustine is one of my favorite streets. It has a couple of real old quirky homes on it with wooden doors that just seem to scream out, "Paint Me! Paint Me!"
So I did just that. I painted this old wooden door, set in stone at the bottom of Bridge Street on the site of the old Sanchez House, and crowned with a garland of bougainvillea for good measure. I happened upon this gorgeous scene while out for an early morning bike ride while visiting St. Augustine. The camera was set on some sort of weird setting, but no matter. I was determined to paint the scene regardless of my lousy photography!
