This was the first time that I've painted on a canvas this large during a plein air session. I usually work fairly small. Ponce Inlet Sailboat, Small Florida Oil Painting by Judy Batterson

Plein Air Study from Sarasota Bay

I did a couple of small studies of boats on Sarasota Bay. I noticed the contrast between the dark rocks and the sparkling water. The more I paint water, the more I realize what a complex subject it is. Water, light, and reflections become the most important part of the painting for me. Plein Air Painting at Casey Key

Last Monday I spent the morning painting at Casey Key. The forecast was for rain but I decided I could at least do some quick studies. The temperature was cool and cloudy, which was perfect for my comfort, but the grey clouds muted the colors of the sky and water. Sea oats towered over me and framed my view nicely while I stood near a high dune. I chose a view of the North and South Jetties as I faced South. It's been hard to do plein air painting here in Florida in August because it's been raining constantly and the heat and humidity are overwhelming. Last Sunday morning, I saw a beautiful rainbow peaking through the thunderclouds. I plopped my easel down in the middle of Siesta beach and started painting as fast as I could. I also did a good sketch in case it started raining. When the thunder and lightning started, I grabbed my easel, canvas, and backpack and retreated to the pavilion - just in time before the heavy rain let go. Early in the morning, I walked to the north end of Siesta Beach to look at the dunes and grasses. The light was grey and the water was greyish green when I started, but as the sun moved higher the sky and water changed to soft blue. I painted quickly, because the heat was getting intense by 9am. This was painted with a palette knife and a little brush work. The beach was quiet except for a few people out doing their early morning walks or runs. Another scene from a beautiful sunrise on the Atlantic. I spent an early morning watching the sun come up on Neptune Beach. I saw a woman walking her dog and enjoying the scenery. They both looked happy to be there. The light was muted but the colors got more and more intense as the sun started to rise over the water. I painted the simple essence of the scene, which has a mysterious, peaceful quality. My website is at Sharon Guy Art.

Watching the sun set over the Gulf is a favorite pastime. I took simple designs and shapes from nature and abstracted them. I think of this style as abstracted representationalism. I keep going back to this subject. Usually, I prefer to work on a larger canvas when I paint the sea and sky, but this painting worked in a small size. Sharon Guy Art
