Plein Air Painting of Beach Umbrellas

Stripes
Acrylic on canvas, 8 in. x 6 in.

I painted this from life early in the morning. The light is pleasing at that time. The umbrellas look beautiful against the blue-green water. The Gulf gradually changes from a blue-purple to a blue-green color as the sun rises. Sharon Guy Art

American White Ibis

Ibis
Oil on canvas, 10 in. x 8 in.

The American White Ibis feeds in the shallow water along the edge of the shore. They are fairly common in Florida. The sun was shining on the bird's white plumage when I took my reference photo.

Birds of Florida's Coast

Water's Edge
Watercolor, 8 in. x 6 in.

I arrived at the edge of the water early on a cool, cloudy morning and painted this group: some gulls, a willet, a plover, and a tern.

Paintings in this Panama City, Florida Dunes Series are the first of three for larger paintings. You can see the sea oats, dunes fences and sugar white sand. The most beautiful white sugar sand is in this area of beaches.

These are common beach paths used for many years. Over the years the dunes in this particular area have become much smaller. I will be adding paintings of beach areas where the dunes are very large later. I was born and grew up in this area of beaches and have a love for the Gulf Coast area that still influences me today. I hold yearly workshops along this beach area and we have great fun painting en plein air.

Development along this coast has destroyed much of the beach so it is really important to capture in paint the beaches as they are today and yesterday. I spent most of my childhood here on this beach. My love for tropical settings and colours was initially inspired along this coast.

Plein Air Painting at Dusk

Last Moments Before Dark, Oil on canvas, 14 in. x 11 in, by Sharon Guy

One of the best times to be hanging around at the beach in Florida is at sunset. I feel lucky to be able to enjoy so many of these beach sunsets. There is a period of time after the sun sinks behind the ocean and before it gets too dark to see. As I painted this on site, the horizon was still light and people looked like silhouettes. As always with plein air painting, I had to paint quickly while the light kept changing, and rely on memory. By the time I was mostly finished, I had barely enough light to work. I made a few touch-ups later in my studio. There was very little color to work with because it was cloudy, so I created a mood with various shades of grey. Visions of Florida

Sun and Sea, Oil on canvas, 12 in. x 9 in.

Watching the sun set over the Gulf is a favorite pastime. I took simple designs and shapes from nature and abstracted them. I think of this style as abstracted representationalism. I keep going back to this subject. Usually, I prefer to work on a larger canvas when I paint the sea and sky, but this painting worked in a small size. Sharon Guy Art

Gulf Coast Birds by Sharon Guy

Willet, Oil on canvas, 10 in. x 8 in.

A willet is a drab water bird with long grey legs that stays by the water's edge. Willets nest in the Gulf coast in the winter. The sunlight brought out a little color in the plumage. This was at Lido Beach, Florida where the water is a beautiful greenish-blue. It was a windy morning and the waves were cresting along the edge of the beach. The bird stood fairly still while I sketched and photographed it. These are some of the many waterbirds that are in danger from the oil in the Gulf. Sharon Guy Art
