You Lookin' At Me? Oil on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

Pelicans are pretty cute when they are floating in the water, and quite beautiful when flying, but waddling around strips them of their dignity. This guy was at Port Canaveral having a relaxing day, just as my painting group was.

I just renewed my passport and I must say, the new one is beautiful, with illustrations of America from sea to shining sea. It has wonderful quotations too, like this one:

The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class--it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of humanity. - Anna Julia Cooper

Someone call Congress. They are apparently unaware of this.

I admit I was not familiar with Anna Julia Cooper, so I Googled her (of course) and learned she was born into slavery, but became a prominent African-American author, educator and speaker.

And that's my lesson for today.

Diane Mannion, Nautilus Study

Diane Mannion, Nautilus Study, 6x6" oil
It's difficult to be a daily painter this time of the year... I'm painting daily BUT on much larger paintings that take far longer than a day.  This is the season of big art show competitions and I never feel ready!  But this head study helped a lot for the painting I'm almost finished with now.  This is the captain of Nautilus, a Gulf of Mexico shrimp boat out of Fort Myers, Florida.  Painting is coming out great, by the way!

Bermuda Ferry Crossing Seascape Oil by Phyllis O'Shields artist contemporary impressionism

Bermuda Ferry Crossing Foggy Morning
Oil  24 x 30 inches on canvas
Seascape a very foggy morning with rough water
Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

This painting was stared en plein air on a ferry ride crossing  in Bermuda.
I left from St Georges, Bermuda where I stay every year in a beautiful villla.
Every year a few weeks are spent painting in Bermuda.
A great day is always spent loading the moped onto the ferry along with the painting supplies and a picnic lunch.

The Sea Express ferry service is operated by the Bermuda Government's Department of Marine and Ports. Phone 295-4506. These relaxed sea routes are unequalled, a superb sea or harbor crossing in unrivalled scenery, much better than going by bus on overcrowded and perpetually noisy roads.
They are far more ecological than a bus, with daily or weekly or monthly passes included in the same price as the buses, and far less expensive than a taxi. The only extra charge is for cycles or mopeds. All places to stay, cruise ships and the ferry terminal have copies of the ferry timetable at no charge.

Unlike the buses, ferries to and from Dockyard and St. George's (see below) can take wheelchairs for the disabled. The Paget to Warwick ferry will take the walking disabled. They also take cycles or mopeds.
From Hamilton, they serve Paget, Warwick, Somerset and Dockyard on a varied daily basis (see timetable) and St. George's on Wednesdays and Thursdays from April 18 through November 2 only). They do not operate when the weather is too windy.

Panama City Beach III Gulf Coast Series Oil by Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

Panama City Beach III  Gulf Coast Florida
Oil Painting on Museum Wrapped Canvas 16 x 20
Tropical Seascape & Dunes Series
(can be framed or left unframed, painting extends around edges)
Painted en plein air
Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism
Club 47 Daily Entry

Paintings in this Panama City, Florida Dunes Series are the first of three for larger paintings. You can see the sea oats, dunes fences and sugar white sand. The most beautiful white sugar sand is in this area of beaches.

These are common beach paths used for many years. Over the years the dunes in this particular area have become much smaller. I will be adding paintings of beach areas where the dunes are very large later. I was born and grew up in this area of beaches and have a love for the Gulf Coast area that still influences me today. I hold yearly workshops along this beach area and we have great fun painting en plein air.

Development along this coast has destroyed much of the beach so it is really important to capture in paint the beaches as they are today and yesterday. I spent most of my childhood here on this beach. My love for tropical settings and colours was initially inspired along this coast.

Key West Hanging Out  Original Oil
16 x 20 inches on gallery wrapped canvas
Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

Key West on a clear day, early morning invites one to just hang out and enjoy the view. This was painted en plein air on such a morning. Of coarse I sat down and enjoyed the breezes after the painting was finished.
