Plein Air Landscape, 6x8, Oil SOLD

I don't often paint out of the studio, but recently I spent a week in North Carolina with my paint group, Pieces of Eight.  We didn't paint as much as we usually do on our retreats, but we did get a few days in.

Purchase here
SOLD

We went to a beautiful location, Grandfather Vineyard, near Boone, and painted on the grounds.  Tables and chairs we set up on the bank of the stream and customers would bring their bottles of wine and glasses and enjoy an hour or two.

It was a beautiful, sunny fall day and we enjoyed our painting session.  When we had put our brushes away, we purchased a few bottles of wine and enjoyed a lively art discussion in this wonderful location.  I took lots of photos and have several from Grandfather Vineyards that I plan to paint soon.

Garden Path, a Plein Air Painting by Judy Batterson, Florida artist

Follow the path to the shady side of the garden! Painting en plein air on such a beautiful day made time pass so quickly. Before I knew it, the sun was making distinct shadows of the large bamboo and camellia bushes on the path to the rose garden. The shadows were a cool blue while the grass reflected the warmth from the sunlight. A large mossy oak cooled off the background. 9"H x 12"W Price: $ 225.00 framed

Anastasia Palm, Old Florida Stately Palm Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

On a beautiful afternoon, I set up my plein air easel in Lake Mary in front of a stately palm tree. With the sun shining on one side, the tree cast a shadow on the grass. Palms are my favorite trees because each one is so different, as if each has a different personality. This one sent out an Old Florida vibe. Tall, stately, and perfectly "coifed", the tree seemed more like a tropical sculpture. 12"H x 9"W

Seascapes and Boats

Tranquil, Oil on panel, 9 in. x 7 in.

I continue to work on plein air seascapes, and I keep looking for locations with boats. This was painted on a very tranquil, cool morning. It was the first time that I was able to keep painting outside for several hours without wilting from the heat. The light on the water and on sides of the boats is what attracted me the most while I studied this scene. My website is at Sharon Guy Art.

Another View of the Gulf

View From the Dunes, Oil on Panel, 9 in. x 7 in. by Sharon Guy

Last Sunday I found a nice view from a wooden platform on the North end of Siesta beach. It had a bench I could sit on, and plenty of room for my easel. I was working on a small panel, so I did an impressionist style soft-edged painting. The Gulf water has a jewel-like color in the early morning. It is incredibly quiet and peaceful there in the morning, and I tried to capture that mood in this painting. For more plein-air painting visit my website at Sharon Guy Art.

The White Sandy Beaches of Southwest Florida

White Sand, Siesta Key, Oil on canvas, 14 in. x 11 in. by Sharon Guy

The white sandy beaches of Southwest Florida are stunning, especially Siesta Beach. I painted this en plein air, while standing in the shade of the blue tower at the north end of the beach. The heat and humidity forced me to quit earlier than I wanted, but I had painted fast and was satisfied with what was on the canvas. The curve of the beach with the dunes and grasses make a nice composition. Finally, the clouds are thinning and I have some intense, tropical colors to paint. My website is at Sharon Guy Art.

Seascape Art from Florida

Casey Key Beach, Oil on panel, 7 in. x 5 in.

This is one of two paintings I did on Labor Day at the North Jetty at Casey Key. I look forward to returning to that area again. I saw many scenic views that I would like to paint. I never get tired of painting the white sand and the blue-green water of Southwest Florida. I hope the light will be brighter next time - I've been painting lots of grey clouds during this rainy season, and miss the tropical colors that Florida is famous for. More Plein Air Painting in the Rain by Sharon Guy

Rainbow, Oil on canvas, 10 in. x 8 in.

It's been hard to do plein air painting here in Florida in August because it's been raining constantly and the heat and humidity are overwhelming. Last Sunday morning, I saw a beautiful rainbow peaking through the thunderclouds. I plopped my easel down in the middle of Siesta beach and started painting as fast as I could. I also did a good sketch in case it started raining. When the thunder and lightning started, I grabbed my easel, canvas, and backpack and retreated to the pavilion - just in time before the heavy rain let go. Plein Air Painting in the Rain by Sharon Guy

Rainy Morning, Oil on canvas, 12 in. x 9 in.

Last weekend my early morning plein air painting sessions were interrupted a couple times by heavy rain. I sat in the car and drew some fabulous clouds. After a short painting session, I had to retreat to the pavilion while a thunderstorm and downpour went on. Beachgoers were patiently waiting and hoping they could go back out on the sand. I ended up finishing this painting in the studio. Painting outside in all the elements requires some flexibility. It expresses the mood of the beach in the rain, with birds huddled together. Painting the Gulf, by Sharon Guy

Looking North, Sunday Morning, Oil on canvas, 12 in. x 10 in.

Early in the morning, I walked to the north end of Siesta Beach to look at the dunes and grasses. The light was grey and the water was greyish green when I started, but as the sun moved higher the sky and water changed to soft blue. I painted quickly, because the heat was getting intense by 9am. This was painted with a palette knife and a little brush work. The beach was quiet except for a few people out doing their early morning walks or runs. Plein Air Painting from Georgia by Sharon Guy

Peaceful Pair, Oil on canvas, 10 in. x 8 in.

While traveling home from North Carolina, I stopped at a KOA campground in Richmond Hill, Georgia, near Savannah. They have a beautiful lake full of birds. The swans, ducks, and Canada Geese are well fed by the visitors. I was renting a little rustic cabin on the lake. Having such an incredible view of nature made up for not having a television. I started this painting on site and finished it after I returned home. I also did some detailed drawings of an island on the lake where hundreds of birds roost for the night. Early in the morning, I watched them wake up and fly out while I drank my coffee. For more of my new plein air pieces visit my website at Sharon Guy Art.
