Bursting Forth, Springtime Oil Painting of Yellow Trumpet Tree by Judy Batterson

The yellow tabebuia trees are blooming all over Orlando! These brilliant yellow blossoms are dazzling to the eye as they completely cover the branches. Also known as the yellow trumpet trees, they bloom and as fast as they bloom, the petals fall to the ground like yellow paint circling the trunk. This original 12 x 12" oil will keep the memory of springtime!

1479 Oak Tree at Adams Ranch plein air

I started this one at the ranch on the Saturday paintout. I liked how the Spanish moss looked blowing in the breeze.  There were a few things I needed to tweak, it wasn't done 100 percent on location.  About 99 percent. I like it a lot better now.  Its 11 x 14 inches, oil on masonite.  $500.

1477 Morning At Adams Ranch

Art Mundo had its first paintout of the year here at Adams ranch.  I got up early, a bit crabby, I haven't been having the best of nights lately.  My dog Whisker's medications are making him get us up to take him out at 3 or 4 am in the morning lately.

I got to the ranch at 7:15 about, its 48 degrees, chilly with patchy fog, it looks cool, I don't see that much where I live.  I drove round and round, there are lots of places to drive there, its fun and bumpy dirt roads, I am glad I have a jeep.  I wasn't inspired started looking for some friends to paint with.  Saw this road and ended up by this waterway.  My friends Betsy and Fran were there so I had good company.  A herd of cows came by too, right under those trees to the left.  We saw two baby alligators too.  I was in a much better mood!

Photos below are how it looked early in the morning, the scene I painted.  I believe I started painting 8 or 9 am, finished it around 12:30 or so.  It was very bright out, the palms were very dark against the morning sky.   If you click the photos they will get larger.
The painting is 11 x 14 inches, oil on masonite.  $500.

Roses On My Window Sill, 6x8" Original Oil Painting

I am continuing on with my series of small floral still life paintings in oil.  They are just too much fun to stop!

SOLD

Of course, this painting has all my favorite colors....the rose, purple, turquoise, green and yellow seem to sing.

This little blossom makes the composition special.

When I first started painting, I worked in pastel for eight years, before moving on to oil.  One of my favorite pastels was a painting I did from the same photograph.

This painting is 20x25"....much larger and still one of my all time favorites.  I must say though, that I prefer the new version over this.

Which do you prefer?

Garden of Eden, Original Oil Painting by Florida Artist Judy Batterson

When asked by the author to paint an oil painting for her book cover, I did research on the subject of the book, "The Little Book of Healing Prayers". Good places for peace and healing are in gardens where one can be still and pray. This thought led to the first garden. Then I discovered that archeologists think that the palm tree was one of the trees in the Garden of Eden. As a Florida artist, I love palm trees! That was my inspiration for the painting! The book is now available at The Glennon House in Winter Park, Florida.

1473 Creek to the Indian River Graphite Oil Painting

I got this tube of graphite oil paint a month or so ago and hadn't really played with it much, I did mix it in with some regular oil paint but I wanted to see how it would act with just some white paint.  It was a lot of fun to try something new.  Its oil on masonite, 5 x 7 inches.  $100.

Cindy's Geranium, Small Floral Still Life, 6x8 Oil Painting

The weather has been rather dark and gloomy lately, so today I am posting a bright and cheery painting.  I hope it brightens your day!

$95 + 6.50

I was able to enjoy these geraniums last summer while visiting my friend, Cindy, at her mountain retreat.  The scenery was stunning from her balcony and every morning the sun would strike these flowers and make them glow.  The perfect place to sit and have that morning coffee.

I almost always show my paintings in a simple black frame.  I think it really allows the colors to pop and doesn't distract from the painting.  Since I also tone my canvases in black, it adds another dimension to the painting too.  What type of frames to do use on your work?

1471 Oaks in Savannas Meadow Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this from life, it was a perfect day out, not too hot or cold.  Its very pretty out here, lots of tiny wild flowers if you stop and look close.  Saw two gopher tortoises chasing each other and a baby one coming out of its hole. The painting is oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches, $200.

Plein Air Morning, a Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

The weather was perfect when I set up to paint in the middle of the field at Cypress Grove Park. The morning sunlight hit the large oak trees and the grass with intensity. This painting is all about the dramatic darks and lights that I saw before me. I loved mixing the oils and capturing the morning on canvas! I would call this style Contemporary Impressionism. 9 x 12" oil on canvas. $225 framed. Available at The Orlando Museum of Art.

Rhododendron Blossons, 6x8" Oil

Still painting flowers!  Hope you have not tired of them yet.  I will try to break up the flower posts with other subject matter, just to keep you awake.

$95 + 6.50

This petite bouquet of rhododendron blossoms grew next to my house in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I snipped a few and placed them in a jelly jar on my kitchen window sill.  I love the effect of the darkened flowers with the bright light flowing in behind them.

My goal with these little works is to keep strong basic shapes and let the viewer's eye fill in missing pieces.  As you can see from this photo, the paint is thick and the strokes are few.

Happy Saturday to you!

Abstract Sunset over the Sea, 11x14" Acrylic

Living next to the sea, I try to visit the beach at daybreak as often as possible.  Of course, this means starting my day a little earlier than usual.

$135. + 15.

To make my life a little easier, I decided to do  a sunset, a memory of my visits on the west coast of Florida.

I added some texture to the canvas and attacked with my acrylics.  Acrylics are always risky for me.  I don't use them often enough to feel in control.  I think, my goal for 2013 will be to use them on a more regular basis and see where they may take me.  I enjoy abstract and mixed media and acrylics are the media of choice for these works.

I would love to hear any advise you wish to share on acrylics.

Paradise Found, Florida Coastal Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

In 2013, it's time to rediscover Old Florida with palm trees, coastal views, and barrier islands. This 20 x 28 oil painting is my attempt to capture what Ponce de Leon discovered!
