January and February.....the months when winter days grow dreary!  I feel that way too, and decided it was the perfect time to paint something bright and cheery.

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Butterfly,Nature "PASSIONVINE & ZEBRA SWALLOWTAIL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

Heliconius charitonius is common to Central and South America but also resides in southern Florida. It begins mating right after it emerges from its chrysalis. The female lays five to fifteen eggs on the leaves of passion flower vines. The caterpillar (depicted twice the size) has a white body with long black spines and a yellow/green head. It can go from egg to butterfly in a little over three weeks and continues this life cycle year round. The Passion flower depicted here is Passiflora incarnata, a species common to the southern USA. The Passion flower is named for the Passion of Christ on the cross. In the 15th century, Spanish Christian missionaries discovered it and adopted its unique structures as symbols of the Crucifixion. The 72 radial filaments (depicted 10 times actual size) represent the Crown of Thorns; the ten petals, the ten apostles; the top three stigmata, the three nails; and the lower five anthers, the five wounds.

Where do I go from here?, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting

Traditionally, January is when we evaluate our performance over the last twelve months, and look at the direction we are headed.  I am a little late!

Artistically, I see nothing but question marks.  I want to have a clear plan, a path to follow and mark my progress, but alas, it evades me.

I looked through my posts from last year, and picked out my favorite pieces, hoping against hope that they will tell me where I am headed.

 Abstract Expressionism?

Maybe....

Thick Paint?

 Impressionism?

 Brushwork?
 Knife?

Really thin paint?

Or does it really matter?

All this thinking is making my head hurt!

I am happy I found this many pieces, from last year, that speak to ME.  I am happy with them which makes me happy with me.

Maybe 2018 will find me treading the straight and narrow.....but somehow, I don't think so.

Thank you all, for joining me on my crazy, unplanned journey!

Botanical Fine Art Painting, ,Nature "MAGNOLIAS IN THE WIND" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

This original watercolor painting is done on Fabriano 300 lb Soft Press Paper. I have always loved magnolias. They are very short lived. They are the first "burst" of color in the spring. It seems like they bloom quickly and the petals can be seen dancing through the air.

Flower Painting | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | White Bird by Carol Schiff | 8x10x1.5" Original Oil

With this flower painting, I wanted to celebrate the beautiful, but not so well recognized, White Bird of Paradise.  If you live in the sub-tropical areas of the world, you probably see orange Bird of Paradise every day, but the white variety is not as plentiful.

purchase here
150 + shipping
The interesting thing is that although the flowers are similar excluding color, the plant and leaves are quite different.

This variety grows on a much taller plant.  I have one over 12 feet tall.  The orange plant is lower to the ground and more bush like.

No frame necessary!
Thanks for reading my blog today.

Environmental Art Painting, Elephant "Endangered" by International Contemporary Artist Arrachme

The beloved elephant though out history has been hunted for its tusks. Here you see the kind hearted giant hiding in the jungle foliage. The bands of time covering parts of him drawing attention to his plight and threat of extinction if we as humans do not stand and care for living things as if they were our own children.

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Butterfly,Nature "PIPEVINE SWALLOWTAIL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

The Pipeline Swallowtail got it's name from being dependent upon the native plant called the Dutchman's Pipevine. This painting was done after I visited a beautiful native preserve in New Hope Pennsylvania called Bowman Hill's Wildflower Preserve. I had been familiar with the pipevine plants of the tropics but didn't realize there was a native one in the Northeast. I was fascinated by this little tiny flower as all the tropical varieties were 4 to 5 times larger. The Pipevine Swallowtail lays its eggs on the leaves and the young caterpillars group together to look like one large scary caterpillar until they are big enough to wander off on their own. The caterpillars create a chrysalis similar to their tropical cousins by leaning off of a branch and securing themselves by a thin filament. The adults appear mostly black on the topside but when the sun hits them just right they shimmer iridescent blues. On the underside they have bright orange/red spots which make them look a bit scary as they flash color as they hover over flowers while feeding.

Landscape Painting Golf Course "THE 10TH AT MEADOWBROOK" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

Called the "Big Track In Little RI" by Golfweek Magazine...it is the longest course in the littlest state. About the only small thing on this 260 acre piece of land are the green fees. Father and Son, Owners and Developers, Peter and Jason Hendrick are down to earth, hard-working guys and are very proud of their course. This is my rendering of the 10th hole.

Botanical Fine Art Painting "RED PEONIES, ANTS AND A RED ADMIRAL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

I love Peonies! Years ago I planted about a dozen or so of them in the fall in my garden. When spring came the following year I couldn't wait for the flowers to bloom. To my dismay I saw all the beautiful flower buds covered in ants. Drat! I thought they were going to eat the flowers and I would end up with just stems. I did some research to find out what kind of insecticide I should spray on the plants only to find that the flowers would not bloom without the ants! Really? Yes, really! The flower buds are covered in a sticky sugar which attracts the ants to the flower. The ants collect and "clean" off the sticky substance allowing the flower to bloom in all its' glory.  How cool is that! This is how this painting was born. The Ants go Marching!!!!

Contemporary Modern Abstract Art Paintings by Filomena de Andrade Booth

Moccasin Slough
40" x 40" x 1.5"
Acrylic on canvas

Four years ago, my husband and I chose to make our home here on the Nature Coast of Florida.  We're about 90 miles west of Orlando and about the same distance north of Tampa.  We were looking for a more rural setting  away from the bustle of city life; a peaceful and quiet area.  We are surrounded by beautiful lakes, marshes and rivers with spectacular misty mornings and colorful sunsets, all of which provides me with lots inspiration for my paintings.  Of course, we also have a lot of wildlife such as deer, sandhill cranes and gators.  I don't see the gators very often, but I don't go looking for them either!

This painting is inspired by the name of a road near our home.  I had to look up the word "slough" for its meaning and pronunciation.  I discovered that it can be pronounced "sloo" or "slou" (rhymes with cow) and refers to wetlands, swamps and marshland.  But, and this is the interesting part, it can also be pronounced "sluff' and that refers to snakes shedding their skin.  And, of course, whoever picked the name of the road was not referring to a shoe, when they chose to include "moccasin".  No, I won't be looking for them either.  I'll just stay in the car, take a few pictures and leave it at that!

Original Red Hibiscus Oil Painting, Floral Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x8" SOLD

One of the joys  of living in Florida are the almost year round flowers in our landscapes.  Hibiscus is one of the most used here, and with good reason.  They are easy to grow, beautiful and available in many colors and one of the first to bloom in the spring and late in the winter season.

This one is a study in reds.  Elio Camacho states that red is the most difficult color to paint.  When you can paint a "red" painting, you have arrived (in the art world).

This does not qualify as a "red" painting in my mind.  A "red" study usually has several red objects, each with it's own shades of red.

detail

Still, this is good practice.

Elio likes to present his more advanced students with set ups that are all yellow, or blue, or green etc.  It is only the bravest who attempt the dreaded "all red" set up.

Abstract Art Painting , Expressionism, Blue Art "Turning the Tide" by International Contemporary Abstract Artist Arrachme

Turning The Tide can be turned to hang both vertically and horizontally. It is the viewer’s genius that determines which. When life has you boxed in a corner transforming the situation is the only way to break free before the situation engulfs and deteriorates the creative self.
