Mountain Wildflower Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x8" Oil Painting
Another little painting from the Smoky Mountains.
It was a beautiful day, and not long after this hike, we had a picnic. Yummy sandwiches on home made bread, fresh fruit, delicious apple cake from the orchard, and a beautiful view. Life at it's best!

| SOLD Roses have always been difficult for me. This time I tried to channel Elio. I was determined not to describe each petal, I did my best to remember the softness and translucency of a rose petal. I wanted to pop the colors, but, not too much. Finally, I made myself stop! Yes, I like this one.....and I hope you do too. |

Last fall, we took a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a crisp, sunny day and my camera was busy clicking away.

| Purchase a Giclee Print here It's hard to go wrong with a blue and yellow painting.....it just shouts "Cheerful". The background was painted with a brush, but I used a palette knife on the flowers and grasses. That's when it started to be really fun!

One of my guilty pleasures, when I am in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is my morning walk, which inspired this painting.
Of course, I also admire the songbirds and gorgeous, towering, hardwood trees. It's not really a guilty pleasure, as it is hard work walking 4 miles when at least half of it is up the side of a mountain.

Sunflowers and farmhouses, the perfect pairing!
It is a cold, gray day, here in the mountains, and sunflowers are the perfect way to brighten things up.
Both sunflowers and farmhouses, are not uncommon, here in the mountains. It's hard not to smile when I look at sunflowers.
Yesterday, we drove over the mountains to Gatlinburg. I am happy to report that things are looking up there. Spring is taking over, renewal is everywhere. Yes, there are still signs of the devastating fires from two years ago, but the mood is upbeat and the tourists are there.

Today's painting is a memory of last summer.
As I was painting, looking out my window at a cold, gray day, with snow spitting now and then, I REALLY wanted to remember last summer! Did I question my decision to leave the beaches of Florida, for the the mountains of North Carolina? You betcha!
But, then I reminded myself.....life is all about choices. I don't care for cold weather, but I enjoy bundling up in warm sweaters and furry boots. After 40 years in Florida, I look forward to the change of scenery and seasons.
No, I won't miss the sweltering summers and fury of hurricanes. I look forward to spending the winter months on the beaches....the best of both worlds.

Floral Landscape | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | Garden Walk by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Original SOLD
I have always had visions of the perfect flower garden in my head and this small oil painting really captures it. A white picket fence, an abundance of flowers, bee's buzzing...something like a Disney garden with no weeds allowed.
When I saw this garden, in front of a charming cottage in North Carolina Blue Ridge Mts., it was like a dream come true. Of course, I had to paint it.
I am not blessed with a green thumb, so this was as close as I could get to my fantasy. I hope you enjoy it!
When I first moved to Florida, I remember going to a plant nursey and the owner said to me "You are in the land of milk and honey, everything grows here." Not true! In the summer, it is so hot, my plants die or struggle to survive. This year we have had so much rain, everything has rotted! Now, Washington State, British Columbia, England....that is where beautiful flowers grow!

a line just jump out? Often I am in the car and think
to myself "what would that lyric look like painted?"
I rarely go further as I can't make a note
while driving but every now and then...
Does the Title Affect Your Viewing?
Titles for paintings are funny things. To some artists they are merely a locale, to others they become a marketing gimmick; sometimes one struggles for a title and once in a while the piece instantly names itself. Purchasing a piece, I once asked the artist where it was. "Oh," he answered, "that was from Siena, Italy." I paused writing the check and looked up. "Shoot, it reminded me of a place my husband and I stayed in Provence, France," I replied. He grinned, "yes, that is just what I meant to say!" We both laughed, I finished the purchase and simply re-christianed the piece. All the same...
What does a title mean to you?
I am serious. My husband and I go round and round (I won't say out loud that he likes trite references which he thinks are literary....oh, did I say trite??) and I wax and wane between what I feel and what I see. Frankly I have rarely bought something for which the title was a critical component, yet I usually ask. The selection is often a point of reference or at least starts a conversation with the maker.
Which brings me to the piece I share today.
We stopped by an amazing "You-Pic-Em" flower farm in Oregon which also had a winery and a gourmet food truck. It was a spontaneous stop on a long but spectacular drive and with one eye on the dark clouds rolling in we stood in awe of the acres of flowers ready to be picked. Wine, lunch, flowers...a few photos and we happily resumed our drive.
Can one ever re-capture that experience? I think not. The dark, mountainous backdrop and the swaths of floral color are perhaps better rendered in the abstract of masses. But on another rainy day in the studio I can play and remember. So I did. And then to title, humming...I will borrow, with respect for Joni Mitchell's endless talent, a line that is laden with meaning...for me.
