" A Glowing Sunrise" Sanibel Island Coastal Art Painting by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

This was painted from the shore of Sanibel Island, Florida. If you'd love to see the most spectacular sunrises, this is the place to be. The rising sun was casting the most beautiful pink glow on the house and the waters before them. Was this another great painting opportunity?

Landscape with House, "Snow Palace" by Carol Schiff,

It has been a very tough winter so far.  Here in Florida, we have had beautiful weather the last few months, but the hardships of winter up north were made apparent to me when a friend sent a photo of their home.

1533 On the Sandspit Indian River Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this painting this morning, the last painting was looking toward the south and this one is looking north.  I left out the buildings in the distance and the bridge and docks.  The bird was there, I think he is a tricolor heron.  I was concerned we might get rained out, the weather report wasn't too promising.  It started out very clear and just a few minutes later these clouds blew in, moving fast.  All was well though, it didn't rain till late afternoon.

I was on the same spit of land as the bird, I was wondering if the tide would be coming in but I got lucky again it was going out.  There is some very shallow water to the left of the bird, that was gone when I packed up to go home.

The painting is 8 x 10 inches oil on masonite, $250.

Pear Still Life Painting, "Pink Pear" by Carol Schiff, 5x7" Oil

I painted this a few years ago and recently found it my studio.  It was a fun piece to do.  I wanted to experiment with color and bold negative shape.

I placed the pear on a window sill with strong sunlight pouring in behind it.  Then the fun started.  I took a photo, uploaded it and started playing with color and contrast on the screen.  A great exercise, give it a try some time

FUN FACT:  35% of people are born without wisdom teeth.

Have a great day!

It's in the thirties as I write this.(I actually wrote this on 1/07/14)  I know, I know, you are at 50 below, but this is FLORIDA!  Fortunately for us, we only have one day of weather in the 50's and tomorrow they are forecasting 70's with 80's by the end of the week.  No wonder, Florida is now the third largest state!

"Beyond The Bend" Original Florida Landscape, Coastal Art Oil Panting by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

Beyond The Bend was done en plein air with a palette knife. This path, through a Southwest Florida preserve, offered an assortment of painting opportunities. From a nesting sandhill crane, to soaring osprey, I found myself intrigued with the gravel and shell pathway and the mystery of where it would take me. What do you think is beyond the bend?

If you live on the coast, you are sure to see these guys every day.  They love skim over the waves, looking for breakfast, and then dive bomb and do a most clumsy looking entrance into the water.

If you are an artist, buying many frames, you may like this tip.  Ask your favorite framer to make you standard size frames from his "end pieces" of moldings.  Often these are thrown away and my framer is happy to have a chance to use them.  As a result, he sells them very inexpensively, attracting more business from artists.  A win, win situation.

1532 Cloudy Morning at the Indian River Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this last week, finally got around to posting it, its been busy! It started out looking pretty gray out but the clouds started blowing away as the morning went on.  There was a little blue heron there so I put him in, he was very tame, not afraid of us at all.

I painted it down by the river in front of the Old Fort Park.  There is a house on the point of land in the distance but I left it out, this is the way it was down there when I was growing up.  Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite.  $200.

I Believe in Discovery I & II, Florida Coastal Painting of the Discovery of Florida, by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Florida by Ponce de Leon in 1513, I followed his route around the state. I also boarded a replica of his galleon which had sailed here from Spain. This was exciting to trace the history of the state I love! This set of two paintings form a diptych to represent the natural coastal areas where Ponce de Leon and his men came ashore. Sitting on the horizon is the galleon. The sand path goes inland and returns towards the ship. The tropical palms, sand dunes and azure waters are the discovery. The orange sunrise sky symbolizes what is dawning...a new land. Diptych 24"x 36" Oils, (each 18 x 24").

I Believe in Discovery, A Florida Coastal Landscape with Palm, Dunes, and Ocean by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

This paintings is a compilation of what Ponce de Leon saw when he first discovered the peninsula of Florida 500 years ago. This is also part II of a complete diptych tying the sailing explorers together with the land they discovered. Bold in color, it emphasizes the boldness of Ponce and his men. I hope this encourages others to keep Florida's natural beauty the way they found it long ago. 18x24 oil on board.

"Sunset on The Rocks" Original Watercolor, Seascape, Ocean Rocks Sunset Painting by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

This view from my kitchen window was particularly stunning one evening. The Maine coastline is a glorious place anytime of day. I could hear the squawking seagulls following the boat as the fishermen returned home with their precious cargo. Lobster anyone?
