Still life Bottle , Palette Knife Art, "Vintage Bottle" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil Still Life

I have become slightly obsessed with vintage bottles, well, maybe a little more than slightly.  I love the idea of these bottles, most of them reclaimed from the earth, crusty and sometimes pearlized.  I like to think about how they were used when they were new.....and if they have a crystal cross on top (called a cross bottle) all the better!

This one, obviously does not have a cross on the top.  It does have any absolutely gorgeous color, kind of a cobalt violet.  I am told the it started out as clear glass, but due to magnesium in the glass, has aged into a beautiful hue.

The other thing I love, is painting with wild abandon with loads of thick, creamy, oil paint and a combination of palette knife and brush.  So yes, this little painting hits my buttons on several levels.

Some days, I just go through the motions, and the resulting painting usually shows it,  but this one was pure joy!  I would love for you to pin it!

 I am always attracted to old churches, and this one is rather special.  It is a local landmark in our town.  I worked right next door for twenty plus years, so I saw it every day.  Now, it also serves as a cold weather shelter for the homeless.

I tried to focus on color interaction as well as texture and abstraction.  I am happy with the results.

 Painting this bottle was a challenge for me, but photographing the results was even more frustrating.  Try as I might, I could not get the correct background color to show.  The image above is much too blue while the one below seems more accurate.

I have to be in the mood to paint with a palette knife, but when I am.....it is really fun (and in my case messy).  Most of my favorite artwork (by me) has a least, some areas of knife work.  I really love the texture which I feel brings a whole new dimension to the piece.

This is an oil painting. Approaching the Sanibel Lighthouse from this direction on the pathway, I relished in the colorful, late afternoon skies. What a glorious site and an interesting vantage point of the lighthouse with the dappled sunlight peeking through the trees and onto the shell path.

Been working on larger things, experimenting with my knives and loving every minute of it! I can't wait til my next workshop in a few weeks. My students are in for some real fun! BTW - there are only 2 spots left. Class is limited to 8. If you're interested, contact me asap.
OK, so... drama queen lately. I am entranced by working out of darkness; dramatic theater type lighting as opposed to the sunny light of outdoors. So many things happened in this painting. Starting with being another painting that got scraped (even after almost dry - can do this with thick paint). Brush toned with mix of prussian blue and raw umber. Built the dark jewel like colors from there. LOVE alizarin crimson; prussian blue; magenta; sap green; and lamp black. Just started using black (only lamp so far); much to the chagrin of my students. Mixing the three primaries is good fundamental practice; but when lamp black helps you achieve richer darks with lots of depth - USE IT!
