Beach Afternoon Mini Florida Landscape of Ocean, Palm, Beach, Starfish by Judy Batterson
Beach Afternoon Mini 3" x 3" Florida landscape on mini easel. Just for fun, I used three colors of artists grade acrylic paint to see if I could take the challenge of mixing them for a beach scene. The colors were bright yellow-green, bright orange, and bright blue with a tube of white. Acrylics dry much faster than oil, so I had to paint fast. After mixing these crazy colors, I ended up with a fun and whimsical palm along the shore! For oil mini-paintings, see my website www.judybatterson.com.

Oil Painting "John Simrell/Whole Foods" by Artist NORA KASTEN Naples, Florida
Oil painting on canvas (30 x 24 inches)
"I painted this from a photo of my son, John, who is the Regional Finance Director for Whole Foods Corporation. John was on the huge market floor below the corporate offices in Roswell, Georgia when the photo was taken."
Daily Painting by Sally Shisler, "Story Road" $150
Another wonderful surface to paint on is Claussen's #13 premium line portrait linen. It's a bit slick, but there seems to be a tooth to it that takes the knife & the paint in a way that's sufficiently controllable for me. The luster of the paint is superior to to the Art Alternatives linen that I've been raving about! At least so far as immediately goes. We'll see how it dries. I like this painting very much. I spent most of yesterday painting WAY out in the middle of nowhere. Which was perfect for the way I felt after spending an uncomfortable night of little sleep. It was gorgeous here yesterday - perfect temp and beautiful light. So, I took my time with a different painting, finished up feeling passably OK about it, then on the way home I saw this scene. It's in Ocoee, my town. Not more than a few hundred yards from a neighborhood I shouldn't have been driving through. But I loved the late afternoon light on this pale green house, and wanted to see if I could catch it quickly. Luckily, there was able to pull off onto a side road to set up. Again, the surroundings weren't too bothersome (a little traffic & some wind) and I was able to knock this out pretty easily. There are some things I'd change if I was brave enough. Mostly design stuff. But since I worked out so many potential challenges during the painting session, I'm leaving well enough alone!

Daily Painting 1038 House of Refuge Commission WIP
These are works in progress, I have a commission to do two of these paintings, each 18 x 24 inches of the House of Refuge in Stuart. They are going to go to two members of a family and they want them painted as close as possible alike. The client wants them like the 8 x 10 House of Refuge I did awhile back. (Daily Painting 1000) So I am painting them at the same time. I have about 8 hours in the paintings so far.

Untitled # 3 is a very strong example of the shoe as an art form,in this painting the shoe takes on color and shape, but takes on a bit of an abstract form as well.

Daily Painting by Sally Shisler, "Azalea Season" $125
"Azalea Season" (4x4")-201034
I packed so much study & prep into this little painting, small as it may be. As I've mentioned over this past few weeks, I'm experimenting with my materials. Up until now, the trials were mostly with the surface. I've settled (for now) on Art Alternatives medium weight 100% linen - primed with clear gesso. It's a beautiful mid-grey with a very nice texture. Yesterday and today were spent with hours of paint mix experimenting. For the last 3 years, I've been using Georgian oil paints. Mainly because of their affordable price, and I was painting much, much larger. I never used any kind of medium or solvent in the mixes at all - just pure paint. Most of my colors are mixed with white, and the Georgian has a very nice soft mixing white that I've really favored. However - it seems the time has really come to upgrade to all professional materials. So Winsor Newton is my pick because of their relative juiciness compared to the others. Tried Gamblin and they seem too pasty.
I did some research on the properties of the different whites. I really hate the super opacity of pure titanium, (save for a specular highlight area). Ideally I'd use flake white (tit. + lead), which seems to be the most translucent of all whites, but the toxicity of the lead white in it does not appeal to me at all. And there was something about the zinc that turned me off - can't remember now. Sooooooo - I then did some research on walnut oil, and I think I've found a workable solution. I'm mixing it in fair amounts with Winsor Newton tit. white, and it makes a super juicy mixing white that I'm really excited about.
If anyone knows of any reason why these two should not be married - please speak now!

I have been painting a lot lately, just haven't been posting. The weather has been beautiful lately, I haven't been online as much. I had fun painting this, broke a few painting rules. The books all say you shouldn't paint an even number of subjects and I have four main palms but I like how it came out anyhow. Its 9 x 12 inches oil on masonite

St. Augustine- "Bottom of Bridge Street", 20x16, oil on linen
"St. Augustine, Bottom of Bridge Street"- 16x20 , oil on linen
This is a view of the doorway into the courtyard of The Sanchez House, in St. Augustine, a lovely old historic house that was built by Jose Simeon Sanchez, one of the Spanish colony of Florida's first and foremost statesmen. Crafted of coquina stone, the house hosted the prosperous and distinguished Sanchez family until the 1950's.
The gesture of the bougainvillea (which is the focal point of the painting) directs the eye towards the palm tree, which leads the eye to the little sailboat. Hence the viewer's eye is led through the composition in a circular fashion.
Bridge Street in St. Augustine is one of my favorite streets. It has a couple of real old quirky homes on it with wooden doors that just seem to scream out, "Paint Me! Paint Me!"
So I did just that. I painted this old wooden door, set in stone at the bottom of Bridge Street on the site of the old Sanchez House, and crowned with a garland of bougainvillea for good measure. I happened upon this gorgeous scene while out for an early morning bike ride while visiting St. Augustine. The camera was set on some sort of weird setting, but no matter. I was determined to paint the scene regardless of my lousy photography!
Thanks so much for visiting my art blog. Please visit my official website here.
