While driving over a bridge I caught a bright red flash from the corner of my eye. There it stood, in all its majesty, draping over the river, a beautiful Royal Poinciana. I felt so lucky to have seen it.

Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, "Great Blue Heron" by Carol Schiff, 11x14x1.5" Oil
It's always tricky trying to do a wildlife painting. The tricky part is getting that perfect photo to work from. With this daily painting, I got lucky!
My group, Pieces of Eight, was touring Sebastian, Fl. On the way home we made a quick stop at the riverside park in Grant looking for wildlife and other scenes. I was out on the fishing dock and this beautiful Great Blue Heron was standing there on the railing, interested in stealing a fish from the fishermen. He held his ground when I inched closer, and closer. I got several good close-up shots. This was my favorite pose.
I painted this in oil with palette knife and brush, on 11x14x1.5" gallery wrap canvas. The sides are painted black. I just love the substantial feel of gallery wrap canvases. If you are interested in a wildlife painting for your home, perhaps you will consider this one.

Feminine Wiles by Sally Shisle
9x12" Oil on Canvas
This painting of a wild a crazy gal is a blast from the past. One of my first palette knife paintings, and one of a very few of my portraits painted this way over the years. There is something to it - a painting that expresses her first impression on people. There were oodles of comments when I first posted this back in 2007. There will be more work like this as I spend more time in my new studio. Today is an important day - I'll be painting the walls, clearing the cobwebs, opening the windows (even though it's hot as heck here in Florida) and starting a new journey.
Today also marks the 7 days before my palette knife workshop....

Cow Painting, Daily Painting, "Bovine Portrait" by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Oil on Linen
A client wanted a cow painting, for licensing purposes. I usually do daily painting of still life or landscape, but I have to admit I enjoyed both the horse, they originally chose, and this cow painting.
I painted on Senso linen canvas. I had a pad of the linen around for several years but didn't really know what to do with it. I found it had a different texture than the cotton canvas I usually paint on, but once I got into the painting, it was fine.
My next problem was what to do with this unstretched painting. After surveying several friends, I mounted it on a cradled wood panel. I was told the perfect glue to use is YES GLUE available at craft stores. I had some in my stash and I have to say it worked like a charm. Then I trimmed the edges with a exacto knife and it turned out perfectly. Now I can use the rest of my Senso linen canvas with no fear!
So, today I stretched my limits, both with the Senso canvas and the cow painting, and luckily both worked out for me!

Florida Coastal Landscape,Seascape Painting,Beach House "House on The Bay" Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin
Growing up in a small coastal state with a large family was always an adventure. We would take family rides, maybe for an ice cream cone, to pick apples or dig quahogs. Often this brought us to the beautiful coastal waters. I always found myself drawn to this particular spot on the bay and I wondered about the house beyond this magnificent stone arched entrance. Would you wonder?

Original Mixed Media, 8x10" Mixed Media, "Nature" by Carol Schiff
Today I am featuring something quite different for me. Last summer I was able to take a workshop from the fabulous Carol Nelson. I was so curious and fascinated by her work. Carol did not disappoint!
We have several fun filled days, learning new techniques and searching for oddities to use as materials. Carol has been known to find her supplies in ditches on more than one occasion. Being the ultimate creative artist, she finds possibilities in items you and I throw away daily.
It was a wonderful, fun workshop and I came home excited about a new world of possibilities.

It brings back memories of a trip I took to New Orleans last year. We spent the day driving through the surrounding countryside and toured two plantations that bordered the Mississippi levy.
As you can imagine, the grounds were stunning, but I couldn't help but think of the slaves who toiled there.

Pretty in Pink, 6x6 Oil Painting by Carmen Beecher

This was a commission to do flamingos, and I always enjoy using my favorite color. Lately I feel surrounded by pink; as I drove up to my house the other day it struck me just how much pink is going on in my front yard. An intriguing subject - bearded man with tattoos. Look closely to see if you can find the swallowtails. Didn't mean for it to be the "Find It' game, but seems it became that. Fun! I actually love this painting. The subject very different from my sunlit figures. Of course as I went along I had Sargent in mind. Certainly not his gorgeous buttery brush strokes, but my painting became more about designing the negative space to support the positive. Learning to marry the darks/lights of positive/negative space is a good lesson.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Mountain Poppy Field" by Carol Schiff, 8x10x1.5" Oil
My husband and I spend lots of summer time in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Whenever I visit, I carry my camera just about everywhere.
I always love it when I stumble across a field of flowers....it seems like a little surprise gift. I do have to admit that this gift was probably planted by the North Carolina Highway Department or some such government organization. Still I have to appreciate the beauty of this seemingly random scene.
For years, I have resisted painting on gallery wrap canvas because of difficulty with storage and shipping. Finally, I have seen the light and am moving in that direction! I still have lots of canvas panels and studio canvas to use up, but as I replenish my supplies, I am using gallery wrap. It is so superior in look and of course, the ability to hang without a frame. The exception to this is my small 6x8" paintings which I will probably continue on canvas panel. I would love to hear your thoughts on this issue!
I hope you like today's daily painting.

I always love a stark contrast in value. It's said to be the most effective way to create a strong, attractive image. It is also said, by traditionalists and contemporaries alike, that there ought not to be anything too attention grabbing situated in the dead center of the space. It seems my designs do this a lot, but it doesn't bother me too much. See here that the earring is just a smidge down and off to the left of center. Is this off just enough to make it acceptable?

Commission a Painting to your specifications, by Carol Schiff
Today's post is just a little different. Recently, I sold a small marsh painting to a client in another state. Since she could not see the art in person before she purchased it, she was surprised and dismayed by the size of the piece.
She really loved the painting, but it just wouldn't work in her space. We decided to repaint it in a much larger format. When the commission was ready to ship, I sent her this image of both works, allowing her to see that the colors and scene were similar and also to judge the size of the original against the new piece.
She was thrilled and the story has a happy ending for all.
If you have a special image or would like one of my works in another size, please feel free to contact me for a price quote. I would love to hear from you.

Kayaking is always an adventure. One day I was thrilled to see two eagles soaring against the beautiful blue sky engaged in their acrobatic tumbling dance.
