Sometimes all it takes to awaken my creative juices is a bouquet of sunflowers in the supermarket. I lucked out today when I spied an unexpected display of fresh sunflowers in the local market, while shopping for lunch.

I took them home and decided that they would look perfect painted in a long format, which I just happened to luckily have on hand. I rummaged through the fridge, found some fresh fruit, and went to town.

When I took the flowers out of their wrapping and placed them in the vase, their little heads were drooping and they looked like they were nodding off. Hence the title!I do love sunflowers. They always make me feel happy, even when their heads are bowed.

I continue to be completely enthralled with Mr. Potthast's work, and I think I may be at the start of a series of studies. His palette is so vibrant, but natural. Nothing seems to be "a little too far out there". I've been reviewing my own past work a lot lately, and am left feeling a bit squeemish by some of the color choices. Vibrant? No doubt, but some are waaaaay out there. Funny how this happens to us. One day you think something you've done is masterful, the next it's a pile of hooey - embarrassing hooey at that. New newsletter is brewing - I promise! I need to decide on what I'm going to shoot a video of. Wanted to do something large again, but so many of you have asked questions about working small, and I may just do an itty bitty for the camera. We'll see.

I did this today at Adam's ranch, beautiful out, saw lots of cows, 4 alligators and all kinds of fish. Saw an otter and some wild hogs too. The painting is oil, 8 x 10 inches, $300.

Sunsets are like snowflakes. No two are alike, and they are all beautiful! I love to watch the sun set over the Indian River with the palm silhouettes against a vivid sky. the ball of light drops fast behind the horizon, and the clouds determine how the light is dispersed in the sky. Always a breathtaking sight! I love to paint sunsets! 6" x 12" oil on 3-D board.

My studio is in serious need of a spring cleaning - serious need. So while I was trying to get started on that yesterday, I came across a book I have of Edward Henry Potthast paintings. I remembered instantly why I got the book in the first place, and hurried to mix some paint and put inspiration to canvas. What I love most about Potthast's beach paintings is how convincingly he uses color and value to paint the effects of bright, hot sunlight on his subjects.
Guess that's a 'duh' statement, since this is the very thing that he apparently spent most of his career painting. In my own bright, hot sunlight paintings, I tend to let maybe a bit too much of the high key areas go to stark white - sometimes using the white canvas for it. With this little study I did from his painting 'Children at the Shore' 3, I wanted to try and stay away from that - to mix a few higher key colors that read as white, but actually are a few notches down. The study is cropped down to just these two figures. In doing so, I realize how much a story changes. Potthast's painting has much more to offer in the way of a more flushed out story. There is a third child - much smaller - that these two older children are watching frolic in the waves. The scene includes a view of the ocean with a third area of interest being a wave several hundred feet out, and finally a horizon line. Much to enjoy in terms of the artist's storytelling. Many of my own pieces are much more cropped in. There is always a representational subject, but the areas of interest might be guided by secondary and tertiary placement of shapes and values, and not by secondary and tertiary stories going on. It's something more for me to think about - add to my bucket list of artist dreams: one day I'll try painting more complete stories.

Pink Pipes II

Happy with the way this turned out! Looking forward to more pipe paintings. Can't help but be intrigued by the pipe sculptures that are in our everyday environments. I wonder how the color it is determined that they are painted. I pass by this one everyday and just love it!

Wally on the Couch

You win some...then you lose on some and learn from each piece! It's all part of the Art...of making Art! The pillows are stronger than Wally...no doubt! Perhaps I will go back and try to make Wally less prominent, that may help?

I've been working on this one for the past few days. I have trouble seeing values and mistakes because my studio is very dark, even with artificial lighting. So every time I thought it was finished, I'd take it into the kitchen to photograph it and see something else that needed to be fixed. I can see a couple things from this photo that I'll need to fix in the morning, but it's pretty much done.

I wanted to paint something pretty, and came up with the idea to use some snippets from some of my past favorites and incorporate them into this one. So this turned out rather pretty , I think. I used the scene from my painting, "Giverny Rooftops" as the backdrop for this window view.
