Original Florida Landscape Coastal Art Oil Panting "Beyond The Bend" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

Beyond The Bend was done en plein air with a palette knife. This path, through a Southwest Florida preserve, offered an assortment of painting opportunities. From a nesting sandhill crane, to soaring osprey, I found myself intrigued with the gravel and shell pathway and the mystery of where it would take me. What do you think is beyond the bend?

Marsh Landscape Painting | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Marsh in Spring by Carol Schiff 6x18 Oil

I love viewing a marsh as the colors change with each season.  In the fall and winter, they are full of mauve and lavender color and in the spring they burst into glorious greens.

Thank you for viewing my daily painting today.

Turquoise and Red by Sally Shisler

Turquoise and Red - 201432
4x4" Oil on Board
This was a workshop demo painting.  Photos were taken outside of each student in the same pose, with the same hat on, with the same lighting direction.  Lots of lessons in this, but the point I wanted to drive home was how to finish off a painting when you're at the final stages.  Careful decisions should be made concerning which elements of good painting can be used to support the image as a whole.  In this demo, I chose to use the red and turquoise colors because as complements, they balance everything else out.  During the workshop, I realized how subconsciously my mind seems to make contrast decisions in sets (first design & shapes, then values, then color families, then lines & edges - etc.).  I wonder how far this can be taken before a painting is nothing more than a hot mess....

Please note: I am now offering private lessons in my studio on Mondays from 10-1 and Wednesdays from 10-1 and 2-5. If these times don't work for your schedule, I can certainly do my best to accommodate what you have available - don't be afraid to ask!

1562 Standing Tall Sabal Palms Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this back in January and never posted it.  Its by the Old Fort Park on South Indian River Drive in Fort Pierce.  I was able to stand on a sand bar and paint the painting, the river is in back of me.

Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite.  $250.

Florida Landscape | Daily Painting | Tropical Painting | Heading Home by Carol Schiff | 12x24" Original Oil Painting, SOLD

If this looks familiar to you.....it's because I have painted the scene before.  If fact, the first painting, which is smaller, was licensed and produced as wall decor on wood planks by Arthouse LLC.

SOLD

This is a view of the Indian River, part of the intra-coastal waterway in Florida, as viewed from Grant Florida.  It was late afternoon (just before sunset) on a gorgeous November day.  I took many photos and have painted about a dozen pieces from this one photo shoot.

I used a palette knife technique that I like to call "color weaving".  It gives lots of texture and soft changes of color.

Palms Along the River, Florida Oil Painting of St. John's River with Palm Trees by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

This 12 x 24 oil painting is from a houseboat trip along the St. John's River. The yellow sky is from the sunrise. The palms lined up for miles on the water which was filled with gators while birds were everywhere. Quite an adventure! This painting is now on exhibit at Leu Gardens until July 9, 2014.

Beach Dancers by Sally Shisler

Beach Dancers - 201431
4x4" Oil on Board
Always best to honor an important event by writing about it immediately after it occurs.  Don't you think?  I've missed so many opportunities to get life's nitty gritty down on paper so that I can relish the fond memories in full. In a nutshell, the week leading up to the workshop, and the workshop itself, was a dream come true!  When stuff happens so serendipitously, like a miracle, maybe it's just not appropriate or even possible to put it to words.  I LOVE to teach - that's what I got out of it.  Might even love to teach a bit more than I love to paint. My students were wonderful - each coming from a different painting background.  Each very capable with their brushes.  Each extremely open minded about learning new things.  Each embracing the palette knives and achieving beautiful, lively work that embodied the goals of my teaching. I couldn't be happier : )   And I can't wait to do it again.  Next workshop here in Winter Garden is scheduled for September 24-26th.  More info on that as time approaches.

In the meantime, I am now offering private lessons in my studio on Mondays from 10-1 and Wednesdays from 10-1 & 2-5.

Today's painting was another joy.  These colors and gestures light up my heart.  I switched it up a bit and decided to work directly on gesso board in stead of the linen canvas which I usually mount to the board.  I also (shhhh) used brushes to make the start.  Finished off with palette knife.

Daily Painting | Food Still Life | Avocado Painting | Standing Avocado by Carol Schiff | 8x10" Oil

Maybe it's because my husband was in the Air Force for 20 years, but, when I look at this painting, all I can think about is that this is an avocado standing "at attention"

$159.95 +  13.95

The thing I really like about this daily painting is that I was able to use my favorite color combination of yellow green and red violet.

The dark sienna and orange helps to make it sizzle.

Do you have a favorite technique to make your paintings pop?

Flower Painting | Floral Still Life | Daily Painting | Horizontal Point of View II by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Oil

If this painting looks familiar to you......it should! Yes, my blog header is very similar... I painted it last year in a 6x8" format and have enjoyed painting flowers every since.

$176 + 16

I liked the original painting and wanted to see if I could paint larger using this same technique.  I have to say I  was pleased with the results.

This one is 11x14, but I think it still shows the same freshness and simplicity that I was trying to obtain.  Thank you for viewing my daily painting today.

1561 Blue Cypress Lake Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this one back in March, finally getting around to posting it!  Its a fairly long drive from here to Blue Cypress Lake and it was already getting hot out.  It was hard to find a good view that kept me in the shade.  I think it would be a better place to go in the winter.  I would really like to take a boat ride on the lake, would probably be able to see a lot of interesting spots then.

Those are cypress trees, they grow right in the water like that.  The moss hanging from the branches is Spanish moss.

The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite, $250.

Daily Painting | Bird Painting | Wildlife Painting | It's My Tern by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil

"It's my Tern" but it could be "Your Tern".

$89. 95 + 6.50

I found these guys on the beach....actually they were two of about 50.  If you know your terns, you know they arrive in large flocks.  The flock acts as one unit and is so much fun to watch.  They swoop down on the beach, each one of them looking in the same direction.  If you get too close, they move a few steps in unison, always moving and looking as one.

I think this is one good tern..........

after another!

And my tern to have a little fun :-)

Daily Painting | Abstract Painting | Small Oil Painting | Wishful Thinking by Carol Schiff | 14x11" SOLD

Well, it has happened again.........I had the urge to try my hand at abstract again.

SOLD
I was determined to do a mixed media  abstract, get out my many Golden mediums, and just have a fun day playing.  Kind of like kindergarten.  Why did I think that?

Don't I know that mixed media abstract is one of the most stressful things I can try?  Why don't I remember that my mind goes blank, that I'm not one of those people that can stand in front of a blank canvas and pick up a brush without a plan?

Why do I always think, this time it will be different?

Well it wasn't.  I worked at least 4, maybe 5 hours with my Golden mediums, getting the texture just right, carefully choosing the acrylic colors, blah, blah, blah.  It was a mess.

The next day, I sanded down as much as I could,  turned to my beloved oils, and ended up with this result.  Something I can live with.  Something that might give me a tad more confidence the next time I decide to do an abstract.  Something that I really kind of ........ like.  NEVER GIVE UP!!
