1537 Misty Waters Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this Tuesday at the Fort Pierce Inlet State park and just got around to posting it.  This was right when the fog drifted through, the opposite shore is faintly visible still.  A minute or two later it totally disappeared and then a few minutes later emerged again through the mist.

Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite, $250.

Small Landscape Painting, "Intracoastal Island" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil Landscape

This small landscape painting depicts a scene I see every day.  Florida's intracoastal waterway is dotted with small uninhabited islands.

Purchase here
99.95 + shipping

During warmer months, the islands are often gathering places for camping and fishing trips or simply a fun boating trip for a family outing.  Even the youngest kids enjoy the sandy beaches and calm, shallow waters and many picnics and happy days occur there.

I painted the scene with a palette knife in the style I like to call "color weaving" which gives it a nice textured look.  I particularly like a small landscape painting in a simple black frame which, I feel, gives a sense of elegance.

Everything's Better With Garlic, 7x5 Original Oil Daily Painting by Carmen Beecher

I like everything about garlic: the look, the taste, the smell. My grandmother was Italian, yet she cooked very few Italian dishes, and I never saw garlic cloves in our house. When she and my grandfather became pioneers in Florida she became a Southern cook and learned to fry everything. He was from Spain, so I wonder what he thought about that? The other non-traditional thing for an Italian woman was that she didn't like to cook. Bad luck for us.

1536 Misty Day at the Beach Plein Air Alla Prima

Very lovely day today at the Inlet State Park. Not too hot or cold, just right.  About when I finished this painting, that hazy cloud in the background passed over us for a few minutes, everything was foggy, it was like being in a cloud.  I don't get that experience very often here.  I loved the drive through the park, the sun was shining on many dew bejeweled spiderwebs making them glow in the light.

The path leads to the ocean.

The painting is 8 x 10 inches oil on Masonite.  $250.

"View From The Cottage by The Sea" Original Florida Coastal Landscape, Seascape Painting by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

Sunset...the time of day when the ultimate calm sets in and the only way to describe it is utter peacefulness. People marvel at the quickly changing glorious colors, along with the speed of descent. Immediately comes the tremendous applause as the sun slips away. This was my view from the "Cottage By The Sea". Would you like to live here?

"I Believe in Going Towards the Light", Florida Oil Painting of Underwater Seaweed by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

On exhibit currently at CityArts Factory in downtown Orlando, this show is titled "I Believe". Each participating Florida artist was asked to step out of the box and be inspired to paint with feeling. I thought in the dark places, we need to go towards the light. Inspired by John 1:5, The light shows in the darkness, I painted kelp and sargassum seaweed growing underwater towards the light. The Light is there for us if we look up! 12x24"framed oil on canvas.$400

Yellow Roses, 8x6 Oil Painting on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

Wouldn't this be a romantic Valentine's Day gift? Flowers and candy are nice, but they don't last. Diamonds and oil paintings are forever.

I painted this twice. I was not satisfied with it the first time, but I learned a few things from my mistakes. The second time I was able to get what I wanted, and did it much faster.

"Serenity on Sanibel" Original Florida Coastal Landscape Painting by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

This is an oil painting. Approaching the Sanibel Lighthouse from this direction on the pathway, I relished in the colorful, late afternoon skies. What a glorious site and an interesting vantage point of the lighthouse with the dappled sunlight peeking through the trees and onto the shell path.

You Lookin' At Me? Oil on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

Pelicans are pretty cute when they are floating in the water, and quite beautiful when flying, but waddling around strips them of their dignity. This guy was at Port Canaveral having a relaxing day, just as my painting group was.

I just renewed my passport and I must say, the new one is beautiful, with illustrations of America from sea to shining sea. It has wonderful quotations too, like this one:

The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class--it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of humanity. - Anna Julia Cooper

Someone call Congress. They are apparently unaware of this.

I admit I was not familiar with Anna Julia Cooper, so I Googled her (of course) and learned she was born into slavery, but became a prominent African-American author, educator and speaker.

And that's my lesson for today.

Cat Painting, Palette Knife Art, "Sleeping Kitty" by Carol Schiff, 6x12x.75" Oil

This is not your typical cat painting.  This kitty was so tired, she was sleeping on steps, in the middle of a tourist attraction.  People climbing up and down around her, trying to avoid her stretched out body and to not step on her tail.  Nothing bothered her.

The painting is on 6x12x.75" stretched canvas, painted with texture using both knife and brush.

Small Seascape Painting, "Florida Dreamin'" by Carol Schiff 6x6x1.5"

If you are fighting the snow and cold today, this small seascape painting might help you get through the day.

Purchase here
85 + shipping

It's a small  view of the ocean from east central Florida.  I love the repetitive action of the waves and could watch them roll into the beach for hours at a time.

It works well, just sitting on a shelf with a seashell or another reminder of your last trip to the tropics.

The scene extends around the sides of the canvas, so no framing is required.

I took a trip to Jetty Park at Pt. Canaveral the other day.

That's where all the cruise ships dock and head out to the islands.  The weather was perfect, mid 70's, and I came home feeling like I had been on a little mini vacation.  Maybe this small seascape painting will help you to feel that way too.

1535 Morning at the Inlet Plein Air Alla Prima

It was a beautiful morning today at the Inlet State Park.  I left out the buildings on the opposite shore.  It was a funny morning, started out foggy and cold, I got to the park and it looked like this.  Painted just a little while and it all clouded over again.  When I left it was clearing up.

The painting is oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches.  $250.

"Historic Fishing Village" Original Historic Door, New England Fishing Village by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

I love to look at the lovely homes in the historic fishing villages of New England. These beautiful old homes carry such a story of life in an old seaport town. This one was particularly special. It had beautiful perennial gardens everywhere. The gardens and the stone walkways were placed with great thought and nurtured lovingly. This house overlooked the water and the boats at dock in the harbor. I'm always drawn back to this place and I imagine the family who lived here waiting for their fisherman to return home.

Radish Bouquet, 6x8 Oil on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

Don't you think radishes have a personality? They are striking in color and nice little calligraphic roots at the bottoms to enhance a painting. It is a pleasure to paint radishes.

I was reading the latest post from Robert Genn's website, this one written by his daughter Sara. Robert is a talented and successful artist who is suffering from cancer. Many of us artists have followed his writings for many years. His daughter Sara is writing quite a bit in his place, and this week she wrote about 11 Steps for an artist, which struck a chord with me. Here is the link: http://clicks.robertgenn.com/eleven-steps.php

Tropical Landscape, "Coconut Delight" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil

A few weeks ago, I was hanging out at one of my favorite places, Eau Gallie Yacht Club, enjoying the tropical landscape.  It is a gorgeous facility sitting on Florida's intra-coastal waterway.  I was sitting outside, enjoying a glass of wine and watching my grandson paddleboard, surrounded by dolphins.  Suddenly I noticed three palms filled with coconuts.

I love the fact that I can pull out my cell and take photos anywhere.  In the old days (before last year) I would miss lots of photo opportunities when I left the house without a camera.

Computers have truely changed our lives.  I remember reading a few years ago, about an undercover invention that was going to change mankind.  Come to find out....it was the Segway!  Ha!

Oh well, one life changing invention in a life time is all I can ask for.....and that is the internet.

Thank you for reading my blog today and I hope you enjoyed the tropical landscape.

White Hydrangeas, 6x8 Oil Painting by Carmen Beecher

These flowers always remind me of my grandmother, who could grow anything. She was completely in sync with nature, unbothered by the snake in the garden. She was surrounded by flowers, birds and butterflies. She was like a heroine in a Disney movie, with beautiful things fluttering around her. I really miss being able to get her advice about how to grow a certain plant. I quoted her so often that when I lived in Bermuda, one of my neighbors asked me, "What does your grandmother say about planting this tree?" I replied, "Don't put a ten-dollar plant in a five-dollar hole."

My friend Qiang Huang had a quotable line on his blog the other day: "There is no shortcut in art. You just have to paint more." To all you Daily Painters: Rock On!

Small Still Life, Bottle Painting, 8x10 Oil by Carol Schiff

I have recently become fascinated with antique and vintage bottles as reflected in this small still life.  I see lots of them in the antique stores of North Carolina.  Most have been reclaimed from the earth and carry the results of spending years under ground.

Purchase here
145 + 13.50 in US
I have been told that the smaller bottle started life as clear, uncolored glass, but because it contains magnesium, it has turned this glorious purple color.  It comes from Ohio.

www.CarolSchiffStudio.etsy.com
The larger bottle is a mystery.  It carries only the imprint of a small sailboat (not visible in the painting).  I liked the shape and the sailboat, so I brought it home.  Are there any bottle experts out there who could give me a little history on it?  I would love to know the history involved in the subject matter of this small still life.
