I passed by this location a few weeks ago, and the boat was still pulled up on the shoreline where I had painted it earlier. An afternoon thunderstorm, typical of Florida afternoons, had moved on, and the sunlight broke through the clouds. This 16 x 20 original oil is now headed for an upcoming event in Central Florida.

Small red boat beached on yellow sand under storm clouds is the setting for "The world is so big and my boat is so small." The boat is so small and lost next to the vastness of the ocean and sky. The storm clouds add to the drama. We have all had times when we feel overwhelmed like this. But we have to experience storms in order to appreciate the sunshine. Using complimentary colors of yellow and violet helps to intensify the scene. Original Oil on masonite.16 x 20" (Giclee available $325)

As I was walking along the Intracoastal Waterway after a storm, I stopped to look at a beached rowboat. The sunlight suddenly broke through the clouds, creating a cascade of light. I painted this coastal scene knowing it had a deeper level. Sometimes I need to beach myself like the boat, be still and wait quietly for the light to break through and bring hope to the soul. Storm Coming, a Florida Oil Landscape of Blowing Palms and Waves by Judy Batterson

From daily afternoon thunderstorms to hurricanes, Florida skies are filled with clouds of darks and lights when the rains gather and the winds blow. Although ominous, it is also beautiful to watch the weather change. I tried to capture the movement and feeling by putting thick oil brushstrokes on top of layers of thinner layers. This is a 16 x 20" oil on masonite. It is one of the paintings chosen for Best of America Oil Artists Volume II, published six months ago. A lot of emotion went into this one!
