The beauty of the mountains we saw in NC is still on my mind. This piece is from the memory of a little home tucked into a corner at the base of two foothills. We passed this each evening as we made our way back to the cabin. The size of the building relative to it's natural surroundings really puts things in perspective. And how the heck long must it take to mow that much grass?? I imagine when you live like this, you have the proper machinery to do it in a snap. I love the solid presence of flat stretches of sunlit grass.

Boy, have I had an awesome art filled day. It was the last chance to see "Transcending Vision: American Impressionism 1870-1940" here in Orlando at the OMA. Kick butt, incredible, astounding & inspiring artists and their paintings. I saw some of my favorites from the New Hope, PA colony of American Impressionists; Daniel Garber, Edward Redfield to name a few. And many, many more whose names I jotted down & intend to research when time permits. Who of you out there knows of Edward Potthast? OMG - if you don't and you like impressionist figures in broad daylight, you must do your research. The quality of outdoor light and atmosphere that he achieved is unprecedented, as far as I'm concerned. His brushstrokes through thick paint just rock my world. And so, today's painting is inspired by what I saw today. I have been working diligently again these days, and it's refreshing to see that my work is taking on a new level, higher or parallel I'm not sure. But I also see the features, style if you will, of my past work, and that is reassuring.

This painting was done on a very hot day on a bluff overlooking the lavendar fields and the winemakers' home. We also had a tour of the actual winery, where preparations were underway for an art exhibit featuring local artists. Theron was preparing to launch a new rose wine called Gourmandise, and they asked our painting group if anyone was interested in submitting a label design. I submitted a design, but I haven't heard the result yet.

I have studied this scene many a time at my friend's house out in the Florida countryside which, like I often say, is not really much like what you think of when you think of Florida. Not a palm tree in sight, and you'd have a hard time guessing where you're at. Sarge loves his time here with his favorite canine pal, Dusty. He's simply in heaven! I finally feel like I've captured the essence of my friends' sprawling back yard property. I have taken artistic license with many a thing in this interpretation, but in my heart, this is the Mielke Way!

A horse looks across to the other side of the fence. Horses are always trying to get to the grass on the other side of the fence, which is where the expression "the grass is greener on the other side" comes from. I have a notebook full of sketches of this horse that I took care of years ago. I used light pastel colors to give the painting a soft, almost Southwestern look. It was quite late in the day when I took the photo of this painting, and I'm not yet sold on how it's translating here. Regardless, this breathtaking little corner of our world is occupied each year by way more people than I can even venture a guess at. Conveniently located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, you can take in the beauty right from the comfort of your very own car! What surprised me is how little there is of guard rails and other safety what-nots to keep the curiously overwhelmed folks (like my husband & I) safe from an early meeting with our maker. Alas - this wouldn't be a bad place to have that meeting. This painting was done on Claussen's #66 landscape oil panel. I'm still messing around with which surface I like the best. This one is quite slick, and requires much more delicate knife to surface contact for best paint application. I have to be pretty decisive in planning the next stroke because I don't want to have to noodle it after it's placed. Pock and pucker marks are bound to appear if you have to get into the noodle. And I soooo can't stand them. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Clouds are hard, hard & hard with a palette knife! I really must devote an entire week to studying them more closely. There are so many subtle color shifts in them, and of course, they really aren't quite white. I do suspect the age old problem of painting what I think they look like - you know, painting a symbol of them (like we do when we draw a smiley face) instead of painting what's really there. But I did try to stick to value relationships that hopefully read fairly successfully.

The simple shapes of this mountain and lake scene lent themselves to a quick study of the colors and values seen during the elusive time of day when the sun is setting quickly. I chose to capture the fleeting scene basically with 2 values of each hue; blue & orange. This is one of those paintings that needs the support of a descriptive title if my goal is to have the viewer make out what's there. I guess most of my paintings are that way anyway. Some more abstract than others. But nature is always the inspiration. You will note that I am still fussing around with blog design here. Still looking for input, and I really appreciate the comments to the design I tried yesterday! You were all correct - it was too confining, too busy & really not at all related to my artwork. I like today's design trial, but I could do without the birds in the upper right. Anyone have clues as to how to change that?

I must first thank all of you who have been (and now are) following my work and leaving such wonderful commentary! It's an honor to have talented folks like you take an interest in my paintings. As simple as it looks, today's piece was quite a mind twist in it's process. I really wanted to combine all of what I felt were successful elements of the recent days' paintings into this one. I thought I had it finished at one point with my trademark suggestion of a path/road/trail winding it's way from foreground to back. But I realized that my eye kept bouncing up and down like a ping pong ball from ground to sky and back. So I went ahead and painted over it with very thick paint. I'm not really too sure that the cows are reading, but as an abstractish design element, I like them.

I assume it's OK to use artistic license by renaming 'Young Mountain', 'Mount Young'. During our NC adventure, we spent an afternoon exploring some of the more remote mountain roads. Winding our way up towards the top of this mountain, we hoped to find a little less civilization. On the way we passed this charming little house that belonged to a little old lady who clearly spends her afternoons rocking out on the front porch. Doors and windows wide open letting nature breath life into the stuffy insides. It wasn't far past her house that we did reach remoteness of the creepiest sort, and soon decided we might be a little too far in to be safely riding around like the tourists we were in our Toyota minivan. Oops...

The finished painting! This is the final sequence in a series of six showing a painting from start to finish. The burnt umber and ultramarine blue dark silhouettes of the cypress trees with aquatic grasses and reeds stand out against the bright setting sun. The shadows are reflected in the water along with touches of light. This is a 24 x 36" oil on masonite. And it's been a fun and challenging painting journey! www.judybatterson.com

Love, love, LOVE white cows in green pastures! I'm aware that the subject matter can be a bit kitschy (did I spell that right?), but who can resist it? In a way, this could be a companion piece to a painting I did earlier this year, "Clyde's Cattle". Though it's much smaller, and much more colorful. I do love the challenge of putting in just enough information to reveal the subject, but not so much that the subject dies in detail. There's so often such a fine line with this, but the last few paintings I've posted are really working for me.
