Daily Painting 1388 Tree Fern at Hackberry Hammock plein air alla prima
I painted this today at Hackberry Hammock, it was at a paintout sponsored by Art Mundo. It was really nice out, so much to see its very hard to settle down and paint somewhere. It was fun seeing everybody again to paint with. The painting is mostly done with a palette knife, has lots of textures. Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite.
Painting Paradise
Rest Your Soul
Acrylic on panel, 10 in. x 8 in.
On Thursday morning, I arrived at the Osprey Bay Preserve to paint with the Light Chasers group. I could only stay for a couple of hours, and had to finish the painting later in the evening from memory. What I remembered the most was the peacefulness of the preserve. It is a piece of paradise. Daily Painting 1386 Heathcote Gardens begonias traveler palm plein air alla prima
I have been going through my paintings, this one is an old one from 2005, I don't believe it ever got posted on my blog since I started the blog in 2005 and I didn't see it back there in the archives. This was done at Heathcote Botanical Gardens here in Fort Pierce. There is this huge clump of white begonias, big huge leaves on them. There are some smaller ones growing around the big ones. This was done all with the painting knife, no brush. Its got some nice textures.
The painting is 8 x 10 inches,

Florida Beach Scene by Sharon Guy
Red Tower
Acrylic on panel, 10 in. x 8 in.
Beach towers add color and structure to a painting. I like doing plein air paintings with a strong, simple, composition. The bright, red tower makes a nice contrast with the white sand. This was painted early in the morning while the sun was behind me. I'm lucky to be able to paint outside in the winter without being cold. Sharon Guy Art

Plein Air Painting of Beach Umbrellas
Stripes
Acrylic on canvas, 8 in. x 6 in.
I painted this from life early in the morning. The light is pleasing at that time. The umbrellas look beautiful against the blue-green water. The Gulf gradually changes from a blue-purple to a blue-green color as the sun rises. Sharon Guy Art

Exploring Chimney Rock by Sally Shisler
"Exploring Chimney Rock" (4x4") - 201208
Don't
forget my three day palette knife workshop from Wednesday, March 28th -
Friday March 30th. Orlando Florida, $350. One spot left!
In case I haven't said it before, Lake Lure NC is a heavenly place. Maybe a bit touristy, but definitely still in touch with the beauty God blessed the region with. And because of all the tourists, there is a host of scenery that shows how human beings interact with nature. My tendency is to be drawn to what the children are doing, but the youthful wonder we adults have buried (perhaps) seems to really shine in these parts. I don't notice this so much at the beach, so I hope to spend more time this summer somewhere in the mountains. This painting came together with ease, which of course is a treat since it doesn't always go that way. One key difference is that I used poppy seed oil as a medium instead of walnut oil. I had switched to the walnut about a year ago just to try it, and somehow forgot about how much better suited the poppy oil is for my small work. It's a tad thinner and seems to mix with the paint more thoroughly, without the slight separation I get with the walnut. As I've said many times, my short attention span doesn't allow the luxury to spend more than an hour and a half. I lose the passion and instinct, and all perspective of what the painting needs in order to get to the heart and soul of the image.

Daily Painting 1385 SOLD Big Seascape Painting With Fisherman and Great Blue Heron
SOLD This is what I have been working on lately for days! It was a commissioned painting, 40 x 60 inches, oil on gallery wrapped canvas. The fisherman is 5 inches tall to give an idea of scale. I enjoyed painting it, it was nice to do something so big for a change, nice to get it finished too! Below are the great blue heron and fisherman.
The client saw one of my smaller paintings, Daily Painting # 1367, "A Calming View" and wanted to know if I could make a big one for her with the birds and her husband fishing. So here it is.

Big Dog Painting
Always Smiling
Acrylic on Canvas, 23 in. x 22 in.
"Always Smiling" won 3rd prize in the Art Center Sarasota Juried Members' Show. The opening is Thursday, March 22, from 5-7. Doing a large painting was refreshing after working on small, daily paintings. I like to use a bold, simple composition. I focused on the warm and cool color relationships, and used glazes in some areas. When I'm not painting outside, I'm usually painting an animal or bird. Sharon Guy Art

Plein Air Painting at Casperson Beach
Snowy Egrets, Casperson Beach
Watercolor, 8 in. x 6 in.
Casperson Beach in Venice, Florida is a quiet, uncrowded beach. It's a great place for plein air painting. These egrets were standing in the shallow water for a long time while I sat near them sketching and painting with watercolors. Sharon Guy Art

Daily Painting 1383 "Colors of the Day" Chunky, Thick, Palette Knife oil Painting
I was in the mood for something different, started this with golden brown paint sort of sepia. I was painting at Treasure Coast Art Association with some of my friends and the one walked by and said it looked like sh--! Well at that point it did, it was all brown. I was thinking, "this does look really bad, I hope I can pull it off."
I added a whole bunch of other colors and here it is. I didn't use a brush at all, its all painted with the painting knife. Lots of fun to paint. Click on it to see it better, its got lots of thick texture. Its oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches, to purchase just click on the yellow Paypal button.

Florida Panther by Sharon Guy
Florida Panther
Acrylic on canvas, 14 in. x 11 in.
I like wildlife art that is not overly detailed. When painting an animal or bird, I sometimes use a photograph as a reference, but I don't want the painting to look like I merely copied a photo. Sometimes I use bright colors in my animal paintings, but here, I kept the colors subdued and natural. Sharon Guy Art

Sunflower, a mini painting by Judy Batterson
This mini sunflower painting is part of a collection of "Sunflower" mini paintings for a sunflower theme wedding brunch! Each guest will receive a small painting on a mini easel. I painted each one in Georgis O'Keeffe style, filling the canvas with the face of the flower and made each petal an impasto brushstroke so it would be thick on the canvas. This should make the wedding table full of sunshine! I painted extra ones to have on hand because sunflowers are so popular. 3 x 3" on mini easel @$25

"Best Friends", 8x8, oil on panel- by Maryanne Jacobsen
I have had black cats as pets for the past 20 years and I've loved them and they are incredibly intelligent. I currently have two in the house, yet I've been afraid to try to paint them. Tonight I decided to give it a shot and "Best Friends" is the result.
I actually love the contrast of the black cat against the tabby- it's that push and pull of warm and cool, dark and light that somehow pulls it all together. I hope that you like it, too.

"Skinny Dipping" by Sally Shisler
"Skinny Dipping" (4x4") - 201207
I had a whole bunch to say about this painting...until I threw my back out bending over to pick up a grape. Let's see, last time I calculated, I was only 45 years old. How does this happen? Hopefully I'll feel better enough tomorrow to jot some of my thoughts down. I will say that I'm pleased with the outcome. It went back and forth; and back and forth - until finally the elements came together well enough to feel balanced and harmonious to me.

I did this one at White City Park last week, didn't get around to posting it till now, I have been working on a large commission. This painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. Beautiful out at the park, I am going there again tomorrow morning. That is a bottle brush tree, they are blooming now and look very cool. $200.
Mr. Pelican, Beach Art by Judy Batterson
Why, hello there, Mr. Pelican! Pelicans, especially brown pelicans, are always part of Florida's coastal environment. They fly in groups low over the water. When resting, a pelican will pull his head down. I can recall a poem that my dad taught me at a very young age: "There once was a bird called a pelican, Whose beak could hold more than his belly can, He can hold in his beak, Enough food for a week, But I don't know how in the 'heck' he can." 5 x 7" original oil $75

"Hermit Crabs" by Sally Shisler
"Hermit Crabs" (4x4") - 201206
I struggled quite a lot through the middle stages of this painting. Just couldn't decide which direction to go with it. Finally settled on using the brightest of the whites to direct the eye in a triangular shape through the composition. This is a very high key piece. By nature it poses the challenge of creating a respectable painting whose only appeal isn't just that it's sweet. I absolutely wouldn't let this go until it reached a point where I personally saw artistic growth and areas that had some virtue. Alas, I just couldn't resist adding the bows at the end. The ONLY reason I added them (I think...) is to help the composition. I'm pleased with the outcome.
