Old Florida, a Florida Oil Landscape with Palm and Water by Judy Batterson

Take a trip into the heart of Florida along trails next to lakes and creeks. There is always dense foliage along the edge of the dark water which reflects the blue sky and palms. Patches of sand and reeds are dotted between the land and water. This is "Old Florida", a vast ecosystem of saltwater marshes and freshwater lakes. This painting captures the sunlight highlighting the edge of a Florida lake. The light beams into the shadows and highlights the palms and sand. This is the old Florida I remember as a child when my friends and I would "go exploring" in the woods. The good news is the beauty of hidden lakes can be found today not only down hiking trails but also in parks and preserves. In this painting, Florida's wild beauty translates into color and light. Original oil on masonite. $395 Framed www.judybatterson.com

Egret and Lily Pads, a Tropical Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

I was standing next to this pond when suddenly a large white egret swooped down and landed in the water. The egret ignored me and went about the business of catching fish and eating them. I took as many photos as I could while the bird was occupied with fishing! The setting and lighting were perfect. The dark water was a perfect contrast for the white bird. The lily pads added an impressionistic touch. It was a Florida moment meant to be painted. The bright colors add a whimsical touch. 16 x 20 Original Oil on canvas. wwwljudybatterson.com

"Purple meets Orange", 16x12, oil on linen, by Maryanne Jacobsen

Purple Meets Orange". 16x12, oil on linen- $750 by MAryanne Jacobsen

This painting received the People's Choice Award at Friday evening's opening reception of The Venice Art Center's newest exhibit, "Show us your Best". Because most of my newest paintings were placed in my new solo exhibit at The North Port Art Center , I wasn't sure whether to enter this juried show or not. In the end, my husband suggested this piece as an entry, and now I am glad that I took his suggestion. Although I did not attend the opening reception, I understand that the place was packed on Friday night, so I feel honored to have received this award from the votes of fellow artists and the Venice community of art patrons. Thanks to all who voted for the painting!

If you wish to purchase this painting, please phone the Venice Art Center at (941) 485-7136. The exhibit runs until December 10th.

Inspired by the Ocean

Ocean Being, Acrylics & Pastel on paper, 19 in. x 16 in.

Looking at the ocean so much has been an inspiration for the last few years. I own a large conch shell that I can use for a still life subject. While painting it from life, I added colors that suggest moving water. Expressing the essence of the shell and the ocean became my focus. Acrylics and pastels make a nice combination for a mixed media piece of art. Sharon Guy Art.

Hammock Sunset, a Florida Coastal Oil by Judy Batterson

A beautiful sight to witness along the Florida coast is a glorious sunset reflected in the waterways and hammocks. Palms are silhouetted against a fiery sky. This painting shows a mass of clouds overhead which appear dark against the bright setting sun.

The Project by Jani Lori

On the easel is a 24x30 of the project. After a memorial service this summer, while the adults were talking and grieving, the kids were busy outside. When asked what they were doing they cheerfully replied "the project". Using wonderful kid imaginations they had gathered rocks, sticks, dirt, branches, banana peels, and assorted objects and built a sculpture on the sidewalk. Leave it to kids to demonstrate how life goes on. I snapped a photo on my cell phone and remembered it this week. It was a good "project" for me too. What are you up to?

"View from the Porch-St. Augustine, plein air paintings of St. Augustine, by Maryanne Jacobsen

"View from the Porch- St. Augustine"- 12x16, oil on masonite-$69

This painting was done quite a while back, and I pulled it out last night and made some pretty minor changes to it. The perspective is a little weird, because I was painting from the second floor wrap-around porch at The Kenwood Inn, in the historic section of St. Augustine, looking down at the intersection of Bridge and Marine Street:

My biggest challenge was to see past the hammock on the porch and still get the perspective correct. This painting was started in the late afternoon, after a typical Florida thunderstorm had cleared, and the warm light on the buildings was yummy-like orange sherbet. The second floor porch at The Kenwood Inn has lovely breezes off the Matanzas Bay and it was a perfect place to paint plein air while being protected from the hot Florida sun.

I did the best that I could to see past the hammock, which I couldn't move, and since I had never painted from that kind of perspective before, I found the whole thing a bit challenging and over my head, lol. It's not a bad painting, but I suspect it would be better if I tried it today, instead of well over a year ago.

As you can see, the Kenwood Inn is in a wonderful location right in the heart of the historic district of St. Augustine, and a short walking distance to everything that is important. The water that you see in the upper left hand side of the painting, is where I stood and painted the early morning boat scene on the bay.

I also painted the old door that enters the garden of the Sanchez House, which is the colonial building with the green shutters that you see to the right in the painting above.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Kenwood Inn. It is a Victorian Inn that is being lovingly restored by its current owners, and in addition to having a fabulous location that is convenient to all of St. Augustine's best attractions, , innkeepers Pat and Ted were warm, gracious hosts and the ambiance in many of the rooms is incredible. Here is a view of the parlor on the first floor , where wine and hospitality is served up in big doses every evening:

If you ever visit St. Augustine, location is everything. Please check out the Kenwood Inn before anything else, since the rates are reasonable, the ambiance is perfect, and the hospitality is warm and friendly! There is also a swimming pool for staying cool, and a side courtyard with koi pond and fabulous old wooden door adorned with flowers and Florida fauna. The Inn also features prominently in the many ghost tours of the Old Town, as there are supposedly some friendly spirits in the house. Truthfully, that doesn't surprise me, as both my husband and I had a couple weird experiences in our charming second floor bedroom while we were there!

I've priced this painting at a bargain price, since it's an old one and was just a plein air study to begin with. Hope it finds a happy home;0)

"Safely Moored-Bass Harbor Head Light", 16x20, by Maryanne Jacobsen

"Safely Moored-Bass Harbor Head Light", 16 x20, oil on linen-$1000

This will probably be the last painting of Bass Harbor Head Light that I will do. I apologize if I have bored anyone but I was trying to improve upon the two I had done before this one. I am definitely happier with the rocks in this one, but I need to keep practicing rocks. They are tricky!

If you are interested in purchasing this painting, please send me an email at maryannejacobsen@aol.com or visit my blog at PaintDance.. This would make a very special Christmas present for anyone who is in love with Maine! I would be happy to take installment payments as well.
