The blues AND the greens.... and the spark of a life being lived in the mountains. One of my favorite past times is making up stories about someone else's life. I found it much easier to entertain myself with this out there in the countryside. Probably because there wasn't a heap of people packed in like sardines. The inspiration for this painting was so far in the distance; just a tiny speck of light that appeared to be hitting the edge of a rooftop - probably that of an old farming family. Not to cut you off there, but right now I had a more important thing to write about. I'm sure many or even most of you know who Leslie Saeta and Dreama Tolle Perry are. OK - if not, and you are a bloggin' artist, you MUST check out their new venture, ARTISTS HELPING ARTISTS. I just became aware of their blog radio show a few days ago, and am just bowled over at their knowledge, talent & generousity with their time. These are two very gifted ladies who apparently never, ever sleep! It's a must see & hear!

This is the fifth photo in a sequence of six showing a painting from start to finish. The farthest part of the painting is done, so now it's time for the foreground. This is the start of the large cypress trees in Blue Cypress Lake. From the viewer's perspective, only the dark sides of the trees can be seen when looking at the sun. The shadowy darks are not painted in black but done in a mixture of burnt umber and ultramarine with variations of added oil colors. www.judybatterson.com

We've seen a lot of these kind of skies lately. The clouds whip up and stuff starts blowing around. Then the sky gets dark and darker. That's when it's time to seek shelter or bite the dust!

Ahhhh - the stunning blue ridges of northwestern North Carolina. It's official - I want to live there someday! The colors are different for me since I don't typically use much blue in my work - except for skies. I simply could not stop voicing my delight with the area. My poor husband had to hear it over, and over, and over again...it's so beautiful, so beautiful, stunning, beautiful.... Not being able to find a satisfying way to express my over the top awe of god's wonderful work. It was spectacular!

Another scene from a beautiful sunrise on the Atlantic. I spent an early morning watching the sun come up on Neptune Beach. I saw a woman walking her dog and enjoying the scenery. They both looked happy to be there. The light was muted but the colors got more and more intense as the sun started to rise over the water. I painted the simple essence of the scene, which has a mysterious, peaceful quality. My website is at Sharon Guy Art.

Daily Painting 1097 Blue Night Forest Miniature Oil Painting

I was playing when I started this one, trying out a technique with lots of turpentine. I put it aside and then picked it up a few months later and saw the beginnings of trees in the paint. I picked them out with negative and positive painting and this is the result. Its fun to do something a bit different now and then. Its 4 x 6 inches oil on masonite. $100.

On my last painting day in France, a group of us went down the road from where we were staying, Domaine du Haut Baran, to paint this little vineyard. It had been raining for the past couple of days, so we were determined to get in one last painting. For part of our painting time, we had to hold umbrellas to keep the water off our paintings and our pastel boxes. But we did it!

"here come the sun...little darling...sun, sun, sun, here it comes"! The sun and bright reflection of the sun on the lake are painted
in. The sun will become the focal point of the painting. The sun will also create the shadows of the objects to be painted in the

This was painted en plein aire in Sarlat, France on one of the very busy market days. The sun was bright and the shade tents were brilliant. I had a wonderful spot to view it all up on a small patio area near a group of galleries.

This one got hidden on my drying rack, painted it a few months ago and never posted it. I did it at Edenlawn Plantation, things were pretty busy then. Its from life, 9 x 12 inches. $300.

This is the second photo in a sequence of six photos, starting with the first brushstrokes to the finished work. In this layer, titanium white blends together the various colors already laid down on the masonite. This helps to create movement and variation without having a flat background. I am working from the farthest point back to the foreground which is the last thing added.
