Floral Still Life on Linen, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Mary's Vase" 9x12" Oil
I did this painting a few weeks ago with my paint group, Pieces of Eight. Mary brought in a set up of fresh flowers and her favorite vase.
I wanted to keep it free and loose, so I started painting with both and palette knife and a brush. I was painting on a linen covered panel, and left much of the background unpainted for added texture and interest.
I have never seen a mum in this colors before, white petals and a purpley blue center. This is where the knife action came in.
Thank you Mary, for bring these beautiful fresh flowers and thank you to all who are reading my blog today.

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Butterfly,Nature "PASSIONVINE & ZEBRA SWALLOWTAIL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe
Heliconius charitonius is common to Central and South America but also resides in southern Florida. It begins mating right after it emerges from its chrysalis. The female lays five to fifteen eggs on the leaves of passion flower vines. The caterpillar (depicted twice the size) has a white body with long black spines and a yellow/green head. It can go from egg to butterfly in a little over three weeks and continues this life cycle year round. The Passion flower depicted here is Passiflora incarnata, a species common to the southern USA. The Passion flower is named for the Passion of Christ on the cross. In the 15th century, Spanish Christian missionaries discovered it and adopted its unique structures as symbols of the Crucifixion. The 72 radial filaments (depicted 10 times actual size) represent the Crown of Thorns; the ten petals, the ten apostles; the top three stigmata, the three nails; and the lower five anthers, the five wounds.

Expressionists Abstract Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Cross Composition in Orange, Blue and Purple, 8x8x1.5 Original Oil
This contemporary abstract painting is on a heavily textured stretched canvas.
I used a cross (one of my favorites) composition and split complementary colors of blue, purple and orange to achieve a nice glow. I painted with a knife to get even more texture and very subtle color changes.

I was always fairly mystified about the process of painting an abstract, but I am finding that it is much like any other artwork. You must have a composition, a point of interest, color interaction and contrast.

A Little French Landscape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 8x10x1.5" Oil SOLD
In my last post, I showed a mountain landscape commission. Today I am posting the second landscape my client ordered.
He has been lucky enough to live in many fabulous locations during his career. This painting is also from one of his photographs of his many travels....the beautiful French countryside.
I must say, I felt a little envy when I saw this beautiful scene. Looks like it came straight out of a movie, don't you think?

Botanical Fine Art Painting, ,Nature "MAGNOLIAS IN THE WIND" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe
This original watercolor painting is done on Fabriano 300 lb Soft Press Paper. I have always loved magnolias. They are very short lived. They are the first "burst" of color in the spring. It seems like they bloom quickly and the petals can be seen dancing through the air.

Wildlife Painting | Blue Heron Art | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | Flight by Carol Schiff | 6x18x1.5 Oil SOLD
I was standing on the dock with my camera when this gorgeous Great Blue Heron flew towards me and landed on the railing nearby. My lucky day! I snapped several photos of this beautiful specimen and have painted him twice.
I was thrilled to get a photograph of him flying, something that usually doesn't work out for me.
I used my palette knife to obtain the texture of the water.
You may remember seeing this first painting a short time ago.
I don't think this bird was friendly so much......just determined. Behind me on the dock were several fishermen and he was hoping for an effortless meal.

| purchase here 260 + shipping I have to admit, I struggled with this piece. I started with a brush, but after much frustration, I turned to my trusty palette knife. In the end, I am happy with the values, and the glow on the hydrangea on the rigfht. And the colors, love the colors. In fact, the more I look at it....the happier I get! So the moral of this story is, don't give up! |

Small Seascape, Daily Painting,, Small Oil Painting, "Favorite Beach", 6x8" Oil
Few things in life are as soothing to me as watching clouds move over the mountains. Walking on the beach is one of those things. What is it about these scenes that makes them so appealing?
Is it the endless repetition? Rather hypnotising, don't you think? Maybe it is the everlasting beauty of the scenes.....the permanence.
I don't have the answer, but I know I know I enjoy painting the scenes almost as much as being there, taking a deep breath of that sea breeze or crisp mountain air.
Enjoy the day....whereever you are!

Wildlife Painting, Bird Nature, "TOUCAN RESCUE RANCH" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe
I have been traveling to Costa Rica for over 30 years. In my travels I search out places that are off the beaten path. I am not much for conventional tourism. It would be unusual for me to be drinking a pina colada on a white sandy beach. I prefer to find places where everyday people are doing extraordinary things.
The Toucan Rescue Ranch is one of those places. It has been a place I have returned to every year. This colored pencil drawing was done to help promote The Toucan Rescue Ranch in the rehabilitation of injured and abandoned animals of Costa Rica.
I am leading an Artistic Adventure Tour to Costa Rica for artists and photographers in 2018. We will be visiting the Toucan Rescue Ranch to support their efforts. You will be able to see owls, toucans, sloths and more up close and personal. Want to join us? Click here for more information about the tour. 50% of the sale of this painting will go to The Toucan Rescue Ranch...... You can own it today!

Abstract Seascape Oil Painting, Tropical Waters, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 11x14x1.5" SOLD
Continuing on my tropical journey to the Florida Keys. Today's post is my impressions of the sea off the coast of southern Florida.
It is hard to find more fun (in the studio), than to dig into a big pile of paint, with your knife, and just go to town. Adding and subtracting values and hues........puts me in the zone every time.
As much as I love creating all this yummy texture, I can only do it for a few days, before I start to crave a little structure and strong composition. Each day I work on this coral reef series, I get a little less abstract and and little more impressionist.
Join me on my journey.....

California Landscape, Small Oil Painting, Coastal Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting
California has it all...mountains, oceans, wild beauty. This view of PCH speaks to the breathless views of this great state.
I couldn't get to California, so I used a photo from photographer, Ted Fuhrur, with his permission, for reference.
While painting this piece, I couldn't stop remembering the time my husband and I, drove PCH from San Francisco to Carmel. What an experience!!
If you have never done it, I highly recommend the trip. You will be hard pressed to duplicate the beautiful scenic landscape elsewhere.
