Daily Painting 1444 Pink Paradise

I have been going through some of my old paintings, this was a plein air  from spring 2004.  There was a building on the painting that I didn't like so I scrapped and sanded it off and re-painted parts of the painting.  I like it much better now!  Its 8 x 10 oil on masonite, $200.

Mr. Pelican, Small OIl Painting of Brown Pelican by Judy Batterson

"Mr. Pelican" 5x7 original oil. I was thinking of pelicans in a storm since it's storm season in Florida and did some research. "Pelican do's and don'ts: If you find a famished pelican on land, the group International Bird Rescue offers these pointers: Don't feed it. Human foods can obstruct a bird's throat, and serving it fish can make it less likely to learn how to hunt.Do place it in a large box with air holes and a folded towel at the bottom if you want to take it to a rescue center. Keep the bird in a dark, quiet place until it is transferred.Do keep the bird warm. Don't allow children and pets near the bird." Never know when we can help wildlife! Painting framed in a beautiful woven dark wood. $125.

Charlotte Harbor, DMannion

Diane Mannion, Charlotte Harbor, 6x6" oil

No, it's not a shark fin.  A dolphin swam right in front of me!  The water's shallow here and I'm pretty sure she was playing with a newborn.  Dolphins gently poke the babies with their noses and push them around in shallow water teaching them to swim and surface for air.  A beautiful sight!

Chief Wm McKinley Osceola, Oil Painting of Florida History by Judy Batterson

This painting was inspired by a vintage postcard of Chief Osceola when he was a young man living with his Seminole tribe in the Everglades near Miami. Normally I don't show a painting in a frame, but this frame completes the painting by giving it an historical feeling. He was known as a great hunter and fisherman and made headlines when he presented Pres. Truman a Seminole shirt in 1947. A fascinating part of Florida history! 5x7" Original oil framed in beautiful carved dark wood. $125.

RUSTY ROOF, DMannion

Diane Mannion, RUSTY ROOF, 6x8" oil
On the way home from Arcadia, Florida, which is almost in the middle of the state, this great old house was on the side of a busy highway.  Had to stop and snap a few reference photos.  There were two main reasons why I didn't paint this en plein air.  1. Busy highway, trucks going 65 a few feet behind me.  2. A big dog.  And when I looked across the highway, a man was holding back two more.
What I liked about this ramshackled residence was the care someone took to prop up a tender, young hibiscus tree blooming with pink flowers at the edge of the driveway.  The place has seen quite a few hurricanes, especially hurricane Charley that ripped across the state destroying everything in its path.  The roof is wind warped and rusted but still there!

Daily Painting 1443 Life in the Savannas Miniature oil painting

I mainly used my painting knife on this one, it has lots of nice textures.

I just was asked the difference between a palette knife and a painting knife.  The palette knife has a wider and longer blade, its used to clean off a palette and to mix paint.  A painting knife can be lots of different shapes, its used to paint with.  You can paint with a palette knife and clean with a painting knife though.
People ask me fairly often if I used my palette to paint with.  No.  That would be hard.  I guess you could use it as sort of  a shovel to paint a very large painting.  I would never tell somebody they can't paint a certain way.

The painting is 4 x 6 inches, oil on masonite.  $100.

Daily Painting 1442 Shady Harbor

This painting sort of painted itself, I started out painting something else and then I saw the trees in the background coming out and I liked how they were looking.  It was reminding me of the St. Lucie river, my dad and I used to go boating there a lot when I was growing up.  We had a 14 foot long Lone Star aluminum boat that looked a lot like the boat in the painting.

We would set in at White City park and explore the river, looking for alligators and turtles.  There were some sandy spots we could put in and then explore on foot, it was a lot of fun.

The painting is 5 x 7 inches,  oil on masonite.  $100.

Frisky, DMannion

Diane Mannion, Frisky, 6x6" oil
Man and friend playing at the beach near Stump Pass across from Palm Island.  The waves were the wake kicked up by boats heading out to the Gulf.  We kayaked out to this blissful spot along the intercoastal, took a short break and skirted along the beach on the way back.  Paddled right over a manatee!  Watched it's huge tail miss my kayak by inches as it glided away in the crystal, clear water.

Daily Painting 1441 Secret Pond Impasto Oil Painting

Its a hundred degrees out, you are walking through the savannas and here is this lovely cool pool of water... Nice day for a swim!

The painting is 12 x 16, oil on masonite, lots of thick paint, nice textures.  Its not one of those paintings where you can't tell if its a photo or not.  I had a grand time with this, I laid the paint down and pushed and prodded it all about.

Palms on the River, Florida Plein Air Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

Near the south bridge to New Smyrna Beach is a beautiful park along the river. I set up my pochade plein air art box there to focus on the palm trees. Using the artist prerogative, I arranged the composition on a small portion of what I saw in front of me. Painting alla prima, I used impressionistic strokes for the palms. The whole time I was thinking about how I love palm trees! They are always so filled with light, shadows and movement. So Florida! 5"H x 7"W Price: $ 75.00
