Sun at Adam's Ranch by Jani Lori

12x9 oil

Painting from the Art Mundo sponsored Plein Air Paint Out at Adam's Ranch. I arrived late in the day, just as the sun came through the overcast sky. Set up quickly and took advantage of the light. Love to go back there and wander through this amazing acreage.

Daily Painting 1378 Adam's Ranch View Plein Air Alla prima

Its oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches. I painted this at the Adam's ranch at the Art Mundo hosted paintout. It was a fun day not too much sun, I painted a little bit of blue sky that came out for a few minutes. There are a few bugs stuck in the paint, you can tell it was painted from life! $200.

Walking with Ellie by Sally Shisler

"Walking with Ellie" (4x4") - 201205
I really am happy with this one, which I have to admit, feels great.  Some paintings come out horrendous; some are acceptable but the gut connection isn't quite there; and some I love. I feel the light in this one, and working with predominantly cooler colors (except for the spots of rose, pinks and corals - and the green in the hair) isn't something I lean towards.  There is a compositional glitch at the bottom where I didn't hit the mark with placement of the figures, but I feel the rest has enough virtue to overshadow that mistake.  Some day I will venture into larger scale canvases, I think.

I am going to send out the formal workshop announcement later tonight or tomorrow. Again, there will be 6 spots available. Three day workshop; end of March; $325.

"Threshold to Joy", 6x6, oil on gessoboard by Maryanne Jacobsen-$150

"Threshold to Joy", 6x6, oil on gessoboard by Maryanne Jacobsen-$150

Happiness are friends, hugs and a sunny doorway. And if that doorway includes flowers and vines that's icing on the cake!

I think it would be hard to believe that such a sunny doorway would lead anywhere but to a home filled with joy and gladness. How often do we stop and thank the Lord for his goodness, mercy and blessings?

I try to do it on a daily basis, but inevitably I know it's not enough.

I found this lovely poem on this site, and I loved it! It reminded me of my many friends, and of the friends I have made who collect my art and have told me over and over how my art fills their home with light and love. I give thanks for all these people as I step each day over my threshold to joy.

A Simple Thank You, My Friend

Into the dim lit, bare walls of my world,
You entered, bringing light and life to me,
The vivid colors, painted with a swirl
Of wit and charm, of personality,
With tender care, you added comfort, warmth,
And images that line the now bright walls.
I look upon them fondly, bringing forth
A thankfulness that you walk in these halls
With me; our friendship has become a part
Of my world now; it has its special place,
Within my being, life, and in my heart,
Your name hangs right beside your smiling face.
Remembering just how drab these walls had been,
I have to thank you for the light, my friend.
- Warmhrt

I don't know who warmheart is, but thank-you for this lovely poem!

"A Dip in Nature's Pool" by Sally Shisler

"A Dip in Nature's Pool" (4x4") - 201204
Compared to the last post, I think this one is a little more self explanatory.  It always helps when you can make out a face, right? I've been tied up these past few weeks with commissions and more medical illustration work (my 'real' job).  Maybe someday I'll post a little sampling, just for kicks.  Many of you are asking about workshops.  I WILL have a workshop in late March.  I have decided to follow my original workshop format, working relatively large scale with emphasis on learning (by way of force - sort of) how to loosen up.  I still believe that what fellow artists are responding so positively to is the freedom and looseness I've achieved in my painting.  It came from working large and out of my comfort zone; working with putty & cement knives, as well as palette knives; preparing a palette of carefully mixed colors before starting (and mixing enough to get me through the entire painting without having to stop); and working outside with nature.  I will demonstrate my methods for you, and I plan to spend maybe an afternoon doing a small 4x4" just so you can see how it's done.  An announcement will be posted and sent out soon.  I'm thinking 3 days; probably Thurs., Fri. and Sat.  There will be 6 spots available, and the cost will be $325 total.

Daily Painting 1375 In for the Day Blue sailboat plein air alla prima

I did this today by the marina in Fort Pierce, changed the background to a more natural area instead of the parking lot and cars and other boats, buildings, etc. It was a beautiful day, had lots of nice company, other artists and nice people who liked my painting. (even when it was a lot of blobs) Saw a family of manatees and a few pods of dolphins. The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite, $100.

The Lake at Dusk, Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

While painting outside on a beautiful day, I turned to look across the lake and could not believe that the sun was going down. I had been in the "zone" where a painter is so enthralled with painting that I became unaware of time. The trees across the lake were darker as they became backlit by the sun. I painted quickly to capture the mood of the clouds with the light peeking from where the land jutted out into the lake. It seems simple, but, oh, it's a challenge to capture light and dark on canvas while the light is changing! 8 x 10" oil on canvas.

Daily Painting 1374 Manatee Center, Fort Pierce, Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this today looking towards the Manatee Center here in Ft. Pierce, it was perfect out and I had lots of good company. Even saw three manatees!
Had a some people stand right in front of what I was trying to paint, I wonder how other artists deal with that, I thought what I should have said was, "If you all don't move I will paint you into the picture!"
Its 8 x 10, oil on masonite, $200.

Daily Painting 1373 Twilight Bay

The painting is oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches. This got started a few weeks ago, I had some leftover paint on my palette and rather than throw it away I put it on a blank panel. I started doing some negative painting, that is removing paint here and there and watching out for shapes. I let it all dry and came back to it today, finished it up. $200.

Daily Painting 1371 Royal Terns at Pepper Park

The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite. This was painted from a photo my son took. I had a time identifying the terns, thought they were gulls at first and finally found some good information on them. These have the winter plumage, they look different at other times of the year so that made it harder for me to tell what they were. $100.

Daily Painting 1370 Hibiscus Aglow

I have some of these small stretched canvases, they are 6 x 8 inches and came in nice gold colored frames. This is one of them I had put some left over paint on to get rid of the stark white canvas. When I am out of ideas sometimes I can see things in the paint and in this one I saw the hibiscus so here it is.
There are some little flecks of colors in the leaves, I was holding the canvas up to get a good view and it slipped out of my fingers and fell wet side down onto my palette full of paint. I picked it carefully straight up and saw the dots of paint. I liked how they looked for the most part, I got rid of a few I didn't like and added a few more.
The painting is available framed for $125. You can contact me if you would like it without the frame.

"The Discovery", 16x20, oil on linen by Maryanne Jacobsen

"The Discovery", 16x20, oil on linen by Maryanne Jacobsen

I absolutely loved painting this. I had never painted a dog before and frankly, I was a little worried. The reference photo (thank-you to the beautiful Tribe/Gallagher family for allowing me to use it!) showed the little girl and the dog looking at something, but most of the dog's face was covered with wildflowers, so I knew I had to wing it . I decided I could make it work if I kept it impressionistic.

Although I see things in the painting that I know I could work on to give it a more finished look, it was painted alla prima, so I am definitely leaving it alone for now. I'll digest it for a few weeks and then I'll probably refine some of the areas that need work, but for now it's at least 95% finished.

So tell me. What in the world are Ellie and Arthur looking at?

Daily Painting 1369 Pepper Park Century Plants

I did this from a photo I took at Pepper Park here in Fort Pierce. There is a whole grove of the century plants in bloom there, its at the north end of the park on the beach side. I love how they look, like giant sculptures. A few years ago I was able to get on ground there and paint but now lots of plants have grown up and I can just see it from the dune crosswalk.
The painting has lots of nice textures, is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite, $100.

Boy - I'm hesitant to ask you what you see! When I'm skeptical of the view, I better be cautious when I ask my husband. Today he grinned and said "Yep - I can see it .... it's a lady walking towards me! Right?! Ugh.... Yes, it is a lady, but it's her hind quarters - duhhh.
So - this was an extremely difficult view point for so many reasons I'd need to start a new blog to cover everything. No - actually, I think I can fit it into my next newsletter. I took photos throughout, so I'll be sharing the development of it and discussing my thoughts along the way.

Daily Painting 1368 Pepper Park Lane Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this at Pepper Park here in Fort Pierce. I took some artistic liberties, made the asphalt into a dirt road. Other than that its pretty close to what is there. If you look into the distance you can see you can take a left, that will lead you out of the park and if you take a right you get to where you can go walk on some nice docks. Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. $200.

Thanks so much to everyone who sent along a 'welcome back' note! It's great to be painting again. This scene was tricky, mainly because it should have been simpler to puzzle together than I made it. There are many decisions that go into creating a successful image, and sometimes it's easy to get off track with what the goal is. Balance is always the key. I talk about this constantly - the right balance of light-dark; crisp-soft; saturated-subdued; textural-slick; real-abstract; movement-static.... The list can go on and on. I always aim to finish a painting in one go. In so doing, the stopping point can be elusive and very hard to reconcile. For me, this is when things get much deeper than just finishing a decent painting. All kinds of questions and beliefs start swimming in the sea of doubt! I won't go into that right now (if you're an artist, you know what I'm talking about anyway). Learning to let go when the mental chaos starts is a big goal I have for this year.
