Abstract Seascape, "Sunset" by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Acrylic

Living next to the sea, I try to visit the beach at daybreak as often as possible.  Of course, this means starting my day a little earlier than usual.

$135. + 15

To make my life a little easier, I decided to do  a sunset, a memory of my visits on the west coast of Florida.

I added some texture to the canvas and attacked with my acrylics.  Acrylics are always risky for me.  I don't use them often enough to feel in control.  I think, my goal for 2013 will be to use them on a more regular basis and see where they may take me.  I enjoy abstract and mixed media and acrylics are the media of choice for these works.

I would love to hear any advise you wish to share on acrylics.

Original Still Life Floral Painting "Tropical Dreams" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St. Martin

This acrylic is chunky paint with a palette knife. Tropical Dreams is a delicious assortment of hues of corals, yellows and purples. The colors in this painting make it sing! Makes me feel like belting out a tune!

Original Contemporary Seascape Painting "Timeless Transparencies-Study2" by Contemporary International Artist Arrachme

The sister to the spirals is this circular round formations of the cosmic starscape. Here the repetitive threes developed for the collection. I also fine tuned the under painting and quality of the colors in the base of each piece. .

This painting was a color study for my Timeless Transparencies Collection, which is on a world tour in 2014.

Butterfly Garden, Impressionistic Painting by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

So much fun painting with kids in our butterfly garden! We did acrylic paintings, layering in impressionistic style while trying to catch the sun on the salvia. Butterflies fluttered nearby. I always use acrylics with children because water is always on hand. I had as much fun as they did. We filled our canvases and souls with color! 12 x 12" acrylic on canvas.

Original Florida Coastal Landscape Red Cottage Painting "Off the Beaten Path" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

FRESH OFF THE EASEL

Okay I have to admit it!! If I see an interesting dirt road I feel compelled to investigate. Of course if there is a no trespassing sign with a picture of a gun.. I'll move on. Seeing a flicker of a bright melon orange colored cottage through the trees peeked my interest. It sat next to a thatch roofed gazebo. Beyond was an area untouched and full of tropical vegetation.
Who lives in this interesting cottage?

Daily Painting, Shell Still Life, "Queen Conch" by Carol Schiff, 8x10" Oil

I found this Queen Conch shell on the beach during a trip to the Abaco Islands.  The Abaco Islands are a small, but beautiful chain of quaint islands off the shore of Florida.  Easy to travel to and with all beautiful unspoiled beaches, great fishing and diving and just plain relaxing.  They are not on the tourist route, which is an added bonus.

I placed it in an east facing window one morning, and got a remarkable glow as the sun shone through the shell.  It seemed to be on fire and I tried to capture that beauty here.

Maybe not quite as nice as a trip to the islands, but a close second!   Every time I see it, I can feel sand between my toes.

Daily Painting, Rose Painting, "Plantation Roses" by Carol Schiff, 12x12x1.5" Oil

This daily painting is a result of my trip to Laura Plantation in southern Louisiana last summer.  Laura Plantation was just beautiful and I found these roses climbing a picket fence.  As lovely as it was, I felt a dark cloud hung over the place as the spirit of slaves were in the air.  The tiny slave cabins could not be ignored, nor the fact that the grounds were maintained by them also.

In spite of that, it was an interesting tour and very informative too.  The staff were well educated in the plantations history and gave us much insight into life on the plantation.

Laura Plantation is a Creole plantation and not what you expect when the word "plantation" comes into your mind.  No big white house with huge pillars but a modest Louisiana home.  The big white house we all think of is from "American Plantations", which we also visited.  It was just what we had expected, but I found it very strange that "slaves" were hardly mentioned during our tour there.

All in all, it was an interesting and informative day and I highly recommend the trip.  Here is a link to Laura Plantation's website:  http://www.lauraplantation.com

The client was happy with the study and I proceeded with the commissioned piece which is shown below.  The reference photo had dark ducks and dark background.  She also wanted to include two ducks that had gone to ducky heaven.  Below is the finished palette knife piece.

Hope your day is just ducky!

Blue Hydrangea Oil Painting Flower Art "The Special Gift" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St. Martin

This blue hydrangea was a special gift from a grateful daughter to her mother. It symbolizes heartfelt emotion. The hydrangea was first discovered in Japan and developed during the Victorian Era. Woody stems and lacey star-shaped flowers are packed closely into a pom pom shape. Coming in a rainbow of colors, It truly does possess grace and beauty.

1547 Oak at Round Island Plein Air Alla Prima

Nice day at Round Island today, saw some manatees, I see them almost every time I go there.

I think the sea grapes are confused, they have both the new spring leaves and gorgeous old bright bright red ones.

The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite.  $100.

Marsh Painting, Small Oil Painting, "North Florida Marsh" by Carol Schiff, 6x6x1.5"

I was thinking of the beautiful marshes around Jacksonville, FL and southern Georgia when I painted this.  We travel the route often and I am always frustrated because I cannot get a decent image of the scene when buzzing down the interstate at 70 MPH.

Original Coastal Landscape Painting ,Palm Tree, Pink House Art "Island Life" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St. Martin

I found this little pink cottage tucked away next to the water. This, I thought, would be a wonderful place to paint. With it's lovely charm and surroundings it would be a great environment to keep those creative juices flowing. However, its present owners felt the same way I felt...oh well...I'll have to find another little cottage tucked in the woods.

Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, "Texture" by Carol Schiff, 16x20" Mixed Media

I was looking at my blogger statistics recently, and noticed that I will be celebrating my 7th year of writing this blog in two weeks!  How did that happen?

To celebrate, I thought I would re-post my most popular painting.  I was shocked to see that two of my works had many, many, more views than the others.  In fact, they had two or three times the amount of views than the 3rd place painting.  They are two completely different pieces of work and even weirder...neither have sold!

I suppose, I should wait for two weeks, but I have to act while I still like the idea, so here is the 2nd most popular  post:

This is a view of a charming cottage and garden I found on a walk through Hyde Park in London.  The cottage was actually some type of park office and the grounds were incredible.

And here is the big winner..............................

If you would like to read the original post, with a description of how this was painted, you will find it here:

http://carolschiffstudio.blogspot.com/2012/02/daily-abstract-painting-texture-20x16.html

Although I had painted a few small abstract type items, I consider this to be my first REAL abstract.  With 1138 views, it far out paced every other post!

So there is a big difference in the two paintings.  The only thing they have in common is that I painted them both and neither sold!  :)  Maybe, with time, this will become my MOST POPULAR POST!

Rooftop Flowers, 8x10 Original Floral Oil Painting by Carmen Beecher

The flowers of Mexico are beautiful, and I actually have the same ones here in Florida, but all husbands hate bougainvilleas because they grow fast and have big thorns. I love them because they are gorgeous, tropical, and easy to grow.

My sympathy to those up North who keep having a Winter Replay. I hope you will be rewarded with a beautiful summer, you have earned it.
