Harp Solo by Sally Shisler

"Harp Solo" 201443
4x4" Oil on Board
I'm learning lots from doing these studies on toned board. In the first of the series, Piano Solo, I mentioned that I toned gessoboard with acrylic paint - a mix of thalo blue and raw umber. I like it. I've used it again here. And also my FAVORITE painting color of all time - alizarin crimson. This color is amazing. So much feeling. It looks good everywhere - even on my dog's snout. Also in my hair, though I don't put it there on purpose : ) OK - that said, about the painting. I didn't mean for her to appear to be in a choir robe; it just turned out that way. It's the draping sleeve on the front arm. Because I love to drag paint into paint, this is the effect I get. Oh well. The painting was challenging enough that by the end, I didn't want to mess it up. Like my good painting buddy Noreen Coup says, "DON'T TOUCH IT"!

Drum Solo by Sally Shisler

"Drum Solo" 201442
4x4" Oil on Board
Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Sting, Tears for Fears....this gives me away - went to college in the late 80's. I'm sorry; it remains my favorite music to paint to. Plus, since I've been working on Drum Solo, it suits. I have to thank everyone for all the positive, encouraging, lovely, happy-happy comments! I guess I should have joined FB a long time ago. This little painting was HARD! I've been getting lots of questions about sizes, technique, materials, etc. What I see; why I leave some things in and take some things out. The longer I paint, the more abstract my vision is. Goal is to say just enough without overstating. I think it's interesting to wonder what might have gone in spaces that appear untreated/neglected/forgotten/avoided . I'm not good enough to render everything anyway - let's be honest. But for spaces that I might be avoiding, I ask myself if the element I'm considering really matters. It's hard to answer my own question in the heat of the moment; sometimes it takes a while. Sometimes I scrape a whole section off and start again.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Abstract Landscape, Abstract Sunset, "Mountain Sunset" 4x6" SOLD

I am just home from a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, which inspired my painting for today.

SOLD

My goal was to reproduce the vibrant colors of the sunset with just a suggestion of mountain ridges.

I enjoy the thick application of paint and rough, unfinished texture in this piece.  It seems the more I paint, the more I move towards the abstract form.

This abstract landscape painting is a 4x6" on 1.5" gallery wrap canvas.  If you enjoy it, please pin it.

"Fighting Jays" Contemporary Painting by Florida Abstract Artist, Fay Kelley

16" x 20" Abstract bird painting by Florida Abstract Artist, Fay Kelley, of our beautiful, but noisy
blue jays.

Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Seascape, "Pacific Blue" 4x12" SOLD

Most of my seascapes are from the Atlantic, or the Caribbean, but today I am visiting the Pacific.

Purchase here
SOLD

My reference photo was taken a few years ago on a trip to California with my daughter and granddaughter. We were in San Francisco most of the trip, but one afternoon we drove south to Half Moon Bay.

For us east coasters, the Pacific was an untamed beast, quite different from our usually gentle Atlantic.  Just that fact that we were peering down from a cliff and that the brave souls who ventured to the beach were all ON THE SHORE was foreign.  Not that we do not have sunbathers on the shore, but there are ALWAYS bathers or surfers in the water, even on the coldest of days.

I decided to use a palette knife on this scene to help capture the power  and texture.

Violin Solo by Sally Shisler

Violin Solo - 201430, 4x4" Oil on Board
This painting is sold but I may have others like it...
OMG - This is the 3rd time I've tried to get this post going after writing very beautiful, eloquent words (ha) and attaching a photo - everything goes haywire, kaplooey. Anyway - let's try one more time...I talked about loving the process that I've used in these last few paintings. That I think I'm gaining ground on what I have been wanting to say in my work, and how I've been wanting to say it. i love what the palette knife can do - after years of practice, I'm beginning to get a 'grip' on how to control it. It can be very unpredictable, but oh so beautiful when a stroke lays down as planned. I also am plugging my upcoming workshops - next one here in Winter Garden Fl., at end of Sept. I'll post more about it soon. If you want details right away, just message or email me. And I talked about how it's tricky as a teacher to find your own path evolving faster than you can teach students who are signed up to learn your experience; see you share your knowledge, etc. based on what they've seen you do last week. A hoot, and confusing. That said - I LOVE, LOVE teaching and haven't found myself in any real predicaments at all. For anyone who cares to know - I wear my heart on my sleeve. My teaching is really part that and part sharing my personal experience in life. How hard it is to be an artist and a human being at the same time. How inexplicably disastrous our efforts can be and how deliriously joyful they can be too. All depends on our perceptions of reality at any given time. It's important for students to see teachers struggle - that's how they learn best. Wouldn't want to send anyone out into the art world thinking they'll make a million off one successful painting after another. Blah blah - sign up for my workshop if you want to hear more about my philosophies : ) I also teach private instruction!

Flower Painting | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | White Bird by Carol Schiff | 8x10x1.5" Original Oil

With this flower painting, I wanted to celebrate the beautiful, but not so well recognized, White Bird of Paradise.  If you live in the sub-tropical areas of the world, you probably see orange Bird of Paradise every day, but the white variety is not as plentiful.

purchase here

The intresting thing is that although the flowers are similar excluding color, the plant and leaves are quite different.

This variety grows on a much taller plant.  I have one over 12 feet tall.  The orange plant is lower to the ground and more bush like.

No frame necessary!

The Courtyard, Palms and Fountain by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

Sitting in a large window overlooking a well manicured courtyard, I painted live inside a gallery. The view was of palms, flowers and a lovely fountain in the middle of a large upscale outdoor mall in Orlando. People love to watch artists paint. I should have added all those cute faces pressed against the window!! It was fun! 5x7 original oil.

Finding Beauties by Sally Shisler

Still painting smalls.  Gearing up slowly for bigs.  Experimenting with new surfaces and substrates.  For a long time I've used Centurion Linen sheets mounted on either superior quality gatorboard (which survives a surprising amount of abuse) or Ampersand gessoboard - which is more recently. Going through my stock (you know, the stuff that we buy then squirrel away for use in the next brilliant painting, which will obviously be better because of it...then forget we have it), I found some Ampersand wood blocks 4x4".  I never used them for anything because I hadn't realized I ordered the ones that were about 1.5" thicker than I wanted.  Anyway - found them yesterday and decided to try them out for my smalls.  Being impatient and ill prepared to do this the right way, I painted directly on the wood without any kind of priming.  Loved the light color of the natural wood - very useful in establishing values right away.  And really love the way my knife sails right over the surface. Which solves a lot of the issues I have with poorly made strokes. They are never perfect as in my mind, but I think maybe on this wood I have a better chance of making the strokes I intend.  I have developed a HUGE pet peeve about unexpected dips and valleys in my knife strokes - especially around my figural pieces. It's because I use the movement and direction of the knife to support the overall design. Knives create depth in the paint.  For me, I think this must be studied carefully before making the marks. Sometimes I think about the next single stroke for a very long time. Might be akin to surgery. Not sure how I ended up with this mind set after beginning my knife painting adventure years ago with large canvases so that I could experience freedom and spontaneity. These smalls, though, have turned out to be invaluable little lessons in all the important things that go into successful painting. This painting has strengths and weaknesses.  I am trying to let go of the harsh judgements I make and find contentment in the parts that are good and sound.

We were on one of the higher peaks of the Smokies.  My youngest grandson was delighted!

I tried to capture the feel of the rugged pines that grow at an altitude of 7,000+ feet, with my palette knife.  It allowed a textured feel the reminds me of the prickly and gnarled pines.

I painted on a gallery wrap canvas to allow hanging with or without a frame.
