My Third Audubon Seashell Collection
These card size paintings in pastel and watercolour are being used as a card series for Audubon Stores, this is the third series I have created for them. The backs of the cards have a complete description of the shell and its habitat.

My sea shell cards are in book stores, gift shops and stores through the South East, Caribbean and Hawaii.

Many people frame the cards as they are on a very heavy gloss paper stock, archival, suitable for framing.

Most of these shells in the collection are found in the Caribbean, Florida & East Coast, California and Hawaii.
A wonderful place to look up your favorite beautiful shell http://www.blogger.com/goog_1499547105

Everyone loves sea shells and has special memories of a vacation spent at the beach. I look forward to hearing from all seashell collectors. Please drop me an email and share with me  your collection.

These are available in cards for sell and small glicee prints on my web store.

Safari Sunset, Tropical Beach Sunset Oil Painting by Judy Batterson

A movie called Endless Summer documented two surfers chasing the sun around the world while searching for the perfect wave. The movie poster had the huge bright orb as the logo for this surfing safari. Whether in Africa or Florida, when the sun sets as a flaming ball of light, it is awe inspiring! 12 x 24" original oil on canvas.

Tuscany Sunflower Study Pastel Phyllis O'Shields Florida Artist

Tuscany Sunflower Series VII

Pastel 12 x 16 without mat
Canson Mi-Teintes
Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism
copyright 2011 PO'Shields

My Inspiration: Last of Summer Sunflowers on the back roads of Tuscany.
When visiting Tuscany each year I paint Sunflowers, Lavender and Olive Trees.
Each Tuscan Sunflower is different with it's own personality, thus I usually sketch en plein air
the one that jumps out at me.

There is nothing more beautiful than the Tuscan fields of golden sunflowers surrounding a golden rustic house with a terra cotta roof.
These are views that I use in large paintings, but for the sketching en plein air there is always one sunflower among the many that calls out to be drawn.

I will be posting over the next few weeks series of these plein air sketches.
Bravissima!

"Playing on the Rocks" by Sally Shisler

Subscribe now to receive my newsletter, "Even More".
It only took 3 times, but here it finally is! A painting of my very own, heavily influenced by my good bud Potthast. While in NC, I took lots of photos to be used as reference in my new work. As I stated in my last post, I worried about keeping what I felt would be appealing color and style in the clothing and hair. Call me a prude, but I just don't get today's fashions that kids are wearing these days. So I drew from what I learned in the past month's studies, and am quite happy with the results. I know you'd be hard pressed to find girls wearing dresses & bows while playing on rocks, but I just couldn't help myself. I hope I'll get some feedback from ya'll!

Towards the Light, Abstract Oil in Blues by Judy Batterson

This loose flow of color is a bit unusual for me, but I wanted to try to express in paint what goes on in my head. If you swim underwater and look up, you swim towards the light. If you are in a storm, you know the sun still shines way above the clouds. We are always seeking the light. The bands of blue represent going from darkness into light. Our souls are drawn towards the light to give us life and hope. 12 x 24" original oil on canvas

"Backyard Bunny and Radishes", 12x16, oil on board, plein air, by Maryanne Jacobsen

"Backyard Bunny and Radishes", 12x16, oil on board, plein air, by Maryanne Jacobsen

I started this painting a few days ago, but it was so hot and humid that I didn't last very long out in the heat. Even under the shade (where I was painting) it was at least a hundred degrees and the humidity was so bad that I was soaked with sweat after about an hour. Today was a smiddgen cooler than last week, meaning it was about 95 instead of a hundred, but I dragged everything back out onto my lanai and finished the painting. The radishes had completely wilted but that didn't much matter.

My husband put his two cents in when I thought that the painting was finished, telling me I needed to "pop" the red flowers next to the pool fountain. So pop them I did.

Here is the photo of my bunny set-up:

The hummingbird feeder added some really nice reflections, though I didn't include the reflection of ME painting the bunny!

The light in Florida is very harsh in the summer, with high contrast between light and shadow. I have not done many plein air paintings this year, because the weather has not been very cooperative.

Bermuda Ferry Crossing Seascape Oil by Phyllis O'Shields artist contemporary impressionism

Bermuda Ferry Crossing Foggy Morning
Oil  24 x 30 inches on canvas
Seascape a very foggy morning with rough water
Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

This painting was stared en plein air on a ferry ride crossing  in Bermuda.
I left from St Georges, Bermuda where I stay every year in a beautiful villla.
Every year a few weeks are spent painting in Bermuda.
A great day is always spent loading the moped onto the ferry along with the painting supplies and a picnic lunch.

The Sea Express ferry service is operated by the Bermuda Government's Department of Marine and Ports. Phone 295-4506. These relaxed sea routes are unequalled, a superb sea or harbor crossing in unrivalled scenery, much better than going by bus on overcrowded and perpetually noisy roads.
They are far more ecological than a bus, with daily or weekly or monthly passes included in the same price as the buses, and far less expensive than a taxi. The only extra charge is for cycles or mopeds. All places to stay, cruise ships and the ferry terminal have copies of the ferry timetable at no charge.

Unlike the buses, ferries to and from Dockyard and St. George's (see below) can take wheelchairs for the disabled. The Paget to Warwick ferry will take the walking disabled. They also take cycles or mopeds.
From Hamilton, they serve Paget, Warwick, Somerset and Dockyard on a varied daily basis (see timetable) and St. George's on Wednesdays and Thursdays from April 18 through November 2 only). They do not operate when the weather is too windy.

Tall Palm Tiny Island, Tropical Beach Art by Judy Batterson

There are many tiny islands in the Keys with teeny tiny island cottages. Although the cottage I saw was old and weathered, I painted this one with fun island colors. The entire canvas was underpainted in blue, then many layers were added until the tall palm finished the landscape. I like the way the tiny house on the tiny island gives such a contrast to the tall palm in front of it. Such a fun painting and a joy to paint! Tall and tiny and tropical! 36 x 12" Original oil on canvas.

Daily Painting 1286 I'm Crabby are You?

Actually I am relieved the painting is finished! I painted it and thought it was done. Hubby points out her one eye and claw aren't reading well so I get out my paints and tiny brush and poke and prod at it for awhile, seeing other things that need fixing too. So I get the camera out and then look at my photo of the painting and see some other stuff wrong, get out the brush and paints, made sure it was signed.

Painting this crab brought back some memories, when I was around 12 we went across the river to Little Mud Creek. We had some chicken parts and some nets, we would throw the parts into the river and the crabs would come to eat and we could net them up. My mother would cook them and we had them for dinner. Very sweet tasting.

The painting is 5 x 7 inches oil on archival mat board. $100.

Panama City Beach III Gulf Coast Series Oil by Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

Paintings in this Panama City, Florida Dunes Series are the first of three for larger paintings. You can see the sea oats, dunes fences and sugar white sand. The most beautiful white sugar sand is in this area of beaches.

These are common beach paths used for many years. Over the years the dunes in this particular area have become much smaller. I will be adding paintings of beach areas where the dunes are very large later. I was born and grew up in this area of beaches and have a love for the Gulf Coast area that still influences me today. I hold yearly workshops along this beach area and we have great fun painting en plein air.

Development along this coast has destroyed much of the beach so it is really important to capture in paint the beaches as they are today and yesterday. I spent most of my childhood here on this beach. My love for tropical settings and colours was initially inspired along this coast.

Alsatian Morning, by Maryanne Jacobsen, 8x10, paintings of France, Strasbourg, petunias, old buildings

"Alsatian Morning-La Petite France", 10x8 by Maryanne Jacobsen

Strasbourg, France, is located in the Alsace region of France. It is a city like no other- melding chic cosmopolitan shops and restaurants with a eerily beautiful Gothic cathedral, and sitting on the French bank of the Rhine river at the border between France and Germany. The ancient cathedral of Notre Dame was built on the site of a Roman temple and is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture. It houses massive carved doors, breathtakingly beautiful stained glass windows, an 'horlage' that marks the time with a miniature cast of twelve apostles, St. Peter and a rooster, and a spire that soars almost 500 feet into the air with a depiction of the Last Judgment.

Strasbourg is also a vibrant symbol of European Unity, and marks the headquarters for the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court for Human Rights. Strasbourg changed hands many times in its history, which translates into a wonderful cultural menage of both French and German architecture, cuisine and language.

On the main island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ill River splinters its way into a web of canals, reminiscent of Venice, Italy, as it winds its way through La Petite France, a picturesque riverfront neighborhood which looks like the setting for a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Tall, ancient timbered buildings with crumbling walls and riotous flowers cascading from windows and patios and decks lean precariously towards the rivers, and numerous footbridges covered with petunias make leisurely strolls a very special event. La Petite France has earned a four-flower ranking in all of France, and the scent of fresh-baked pastries and delectable meat pies waft through the air, luring visitors to sit for hours at an outdoor table, enjoying the beer of the day or a glass of Alsatien wine.

It was along one of those picturesque footbridges that I snapped this photo of the Il River and La Petite France, with its 13th century houses. I absolutely love painting this scene, because it takes me back to our trip there in 2002. Perhaps one of these days, I'll go back. I hope you enjoy this painting.

Daily Painting 1283 Rainbow Reef Fish Painting

I could have sworn I posted this one already, I was looking through my file and found it. I did it at the Art Bank on some of their open studio nights. I did the background first , let it dry, and then come back and see what I see in it. If I am lucky the fish hint that they are there and I just have to paint them the rest of the way in. They are fantasy fish, out of my head, the big ones look a bit like snook, haven't had any of that in years, snook are one of my favorite fish to eat. Maybe a bit of wishful thinking on my part.

Its oil on archival mat board, 5 x 7 inches, $100.

Oil Painting on Linen Canvas 24 x 36

Tahiti is a mystical place at all times of day. The colours change constantly, the intensity and brightness of the colour is very difficult to believe when translated to canvas. "Time to Go", 14x11, oil on canvas board by Maryanne Jacobsen

"Time to Go", 14x11, oil on canvas board

This painting came together quickly and beautifully for me after I'd worked hard on a couple commissions for a few weeks.

Once the commission work was done, I wanted to just painting something simple, beautiful and fun. (and smallish!) Since I've been working on beach paintings of late, it was natural for me to want to use the left over paint on my palette to continue in the same vein I'd been in for the past week or so. So I decided upon a scene I was well familiar with-(Venice Beach, Florida) and a bird that I am also well familiar with (Great Blue Heron) and voila! I had a new painting in no time at all!

This one exudes freedom, just like the bird taking flight.

I hope that you like it, too. To see more of my paintings, please visit my official website at Maryanne Jacobsen, Fine art, or visit my blog at Paint Dance.
