Dog Painting, Daily Painting, Pet Portrait, Small Oil Painting, "The Mutt" 8x8x1.5" Oil

What is your favorite subject matter to paint?  I admire artists who paint the same objects time after time, something I can not seem to master.  I hop from subject matter to subject matter and even from impressionist to abstract.  I cannot seem to control my inner child artist!

When I saw this image of my cousin's dog, I wanted to paint it immediately.  You can just tell that she (her name is Sally) is looking in the face of her beloved owner, looking for a pat on the head or a little taste of something forbidden.

That is what hooked  me on this image.  It's not not the subject matter at all.  It could be the beautiful colors of a sunset, the light on a wave, the turn of a leaf......something that appeals to me.  Today it's those eyes.

I would love to hear why you paint, what you paint.

Thank you for reading my blog today.

Big Dog Painting

Always Smiling
Acrylic on Canvas, 23 in. x 22 in.

"Always Smiling" won 3rd prize in the Art Center Sarasota Juried Members' Show. The opening is Thursday, March 22, from 5-7. Doing a large painting was refreshing after working on small, daily paintings. I like to use a bold, simple composition. I focused on the warm and cool color relationships, and used glazes in some areas. When I'm not painting outside, I'm usually painting an animal or bird. Sharon Guy Art

Dog Faces by Sharon Guy

Waking Up
Acrylic on panel, 8 in. x 10 in.

I'm working on a series of dog paintings. I'm collecting photographs of dogs to paint, especially close-ups of dog faces. Big dogs, small, dogs, fancy dogs, and shelter mutts.

Portrait of a Dog

Dark Eyes,
Oil on panel, 8 in. x 6 in.

This is a portrait of my dog, Leo. He looked up from his nap while I took his photo. I've been sketching and taking pictures of my two dogs. His eyes are remarkable. I think it is important to get the eyes right in a pet portrait. If the eyes are right, the rest of the painting will follow.
