Spring Bouquet, 6x8 Original Oil on Canvas, Floral Painting

Our painting group, Pieces of 8, ambitiously painted this still life during one of our sessions. It was a lot of fun. I am trying to get it into my head to simplify, along with all the other disciplines in art that I am trying to get into my head. People always ask, "How long did it take you to do that?" They should be asking how many successes and failures, trials and errors, immersing oneself in values, composition, drawing, color, brush strokes, perspective, form, lighting, subtleties--it goes on and on. That's why there are so many aged artists. Doing art is a constant striving for improvement, and if "artist" is something you are, not something you do, you will do it for as long as you can hold a brush.

One-Eyed Rose, 10x8 Original Oil Painting by Carmen Beecher

I called this painting One-Eyed Rose because when I painted it I had a patch over one eye. I had cataract surgery the previous day and the patch was still on. It was very interesting painting with one eye, because my depth perception was a bit off. I would reach out with the brush, ready to stroke the canvas, and I wasn't quite there yet. Once I got going, I compensated for that easily. When they took the patch off at the doctor's office, everything had a lavender hue except for my chartreuse-tinged Kleenex. Colors are so much brighter now, and I am so glad I did it. I didn't even appreciate HDTV until now!
