The Cut by Sally Shisler

The Cut, 10x20" Oil on linen 201445
Available - Contact me for pricing.
scshisler@gmail.com

Been working on larger things, experimenting with my knives and loving every minute of it! I can't wait til my next workshop in a few weeks. My students are in for some real fun! BTW - there are only 2 spots left. Class is limited to 8. If you're interested, contact me asap.
OK, so... drama queen lately. I am entranced by working out of darkness; dramatic theater type lighting as opposed to the sunny light of outdoors. So many things happened in this painting. Starting with being another painting that got scraped (even after almost dry - can do this with thick paint). Brush toned with mix of prussian blue and raw umber. Built the dark jewel like colors from there. LOVE alizarin crimson; prussian blue; magenta; sap green; and lamp black. Just started using black (only lamp so far); much to the chagrin of my students. Mixing the three primaries is good fundamental practice; but when lamp black helps you achieve richer darks with lots of depth - USE IT!

Figurative Art | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Boy Fishing Painting | Taking a Break by Carol Schiff | 8x10x.75" Original

In this daily painting, I was at the end of Cocoa Beach pier on a hot August day.  This small boy had put his rod and reel aside and was staring intently into the water.  Had he found some fish?  a surfer?  Maybe he was contemplating how cool and refreshing to water would feel.

Whatever he was thinking, I hope he remembers this day forever.  When he could just do what boys do.....a modern day Huck Finn.  He reminds me of my son at that age.

This boy is all grown up now.....and so is my son, who has a son of his own that likes to dream of fishing on a hot summer day.

Original Contemporary Seascape Painting "Endless" by Contemporary International Artist Arrachme

My love affair with water… I am silently inspired by the magnificence of water. Drawing its essence in with my every breath, it influences me to create. Water’s power sustains the flow of life’s current. The receding movement takes away my concerns leaving me with a renewed sense of infinite possibility.

Masquerading by Sally Shisler

"Masquerading" 201444
4x4" Oil on board
$200 framed.
Dare I say? Ok - Puck Happens. What is it? It's my super-dee-duper technical term for sticky, raised areas that come when you pull the knife off painting surfaces suddenly and abruptly. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with knife strokes. Why? Because when I do it, I know I'm not using my whole arm to pull the paint across the board. Therefore, I'm not 'feeling' it much and I know for sure I'm losing touch with expression and putting too much focus on something else. I have a student who thinks I should make Puck Happens t-shirts and give them out in class. Or aprons; or what have you. Not sure it's appropriate though. This painting was inspired by the upcoming Halloween season. Not typically my favorite day, but clearly one that millions of folks enjoy a great deal.
FYI - Earlier today I posted my workshop schedule for the remainder of this year, and for what's scheduled so far into 2015. I am working on arranging for one in Raleigh Durham area, as well as one in Carmel too. So for all of my followers who have been asking for years if I do workshops anywhere near them - I'm coming soon!! To the cost - it appears that I forgot to include it. $320 for 3 day workshop in Winter Garden Florida. I have to double check with Donna Thomas at Sandy Springs Art School.

Tip for artists:  Instead of purchasing art books, I purchase paintings from my favorite artists.  I find it much more helpful for me to study technique and brushwork from an actual example instead of a book.  I have the added benefit of owning original artwork which I enjoy daily in my home.

Original Historic Door, New England Fishing Village "Historic Fishing Village" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

I love to look at the lovely homes in the historic fishing villages of New England. These beautiful old homes carry such a story of life in an old seaport town. This one was particularly special. It had beautiful perennial gardens everywhere. The gardens and the stone walkways were placed with great thought and nurtured lovingly. This house overlooked the water and the boats at dock in the harbor. I'm always drawn back to this place and I imagine the family who lived here waiting for their fisherman to return home.

Painting on Sale | Small Seascape | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Offshore Storm by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil

Today's painting on sale brings back some not so pleasant memories.

My husband and I were walking the beach on afternoon, when suddenly the sky was filled with black clouds.  The beach is not the place to be when a storm comes in so we quickly returned to our car.......but not before I took a quick photo.  There was just a streak of light on the horizon as the black clouds closed in.

Small Seascape | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Morning Light by Carol Schiff | 8x10 Original Oil

I have been spending so much time in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my trips to the beaches have suffered.  Time to roll out of bed before the sun, grapb a cup of coffee and go for a short drive to the sea.

SOLD
Just as I arrive, the sun starts it's slow climb above the horizon.  I have forgotten how peaceful and beautiful it is on the beach at this time of day.  Way down the beach, I can see a fisherman, but other than him we are alone with the birds who are looking for breakfast.

It is so enjoyable here, cool, serene.....I feel refreshed and ready to start my day.

Do you have a happy place too?

This painting was commissioned by a client who saw a similar work on the Etsy site.  The piece she wanted was already sold.  I was happy to do a similar painting in the size she desired.

Rural Landscape Painting | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Country Road by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Original

Country Road, take me home.....

I still miss John Denver!   This rural landscape painting reminds me of his talent and the beautiful songs he left with us.

purchase here
97 + shipping

I walk this road every morning when I am in the Smoky Mts. of Carolina.  The morning light and pastoral scenes are the perfect way to start my days there.

I painted with a palette knife, in a technique I refer to as "color weaving".  It allows for lots of texture in the work as well as very subtle changes in color. This is actually the same scene I painted in my previous post, but the finished effect is completely different.  That's one of the things I love about art!

Thank you for reading my blog today.

Reflections on Venice, 14x11 Original Oil on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

NFS

As I was reflecting on my trip to Venice, I realized that I had never published this painting on my blog. Venice is a city I would love to revisit. I certainly understand why John Singer Sargent spent so much time in this beautiful and unique city. There is a painting around each corner.

Original Florida Landscape Coastal Art Oil Panting "Beyond The Bend" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

Beyond The Bend was done en plein air with a palette knife. This path, through a Southwest Florida preserve, offered an assortment of painting opportunities. From a nesting sandhill crane, to soaring osprey, I found myself intrigued with the gravel and shell pathway and the mystery of where it would take me. What do you think is beyond the bend?
