Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Autumn Landscape, Daily Art, "Tree on Fire", 8x10x1.5" Oil
This time of the year, the mountains are where I want to be. This year, I have been very lucky to spend two months here.
I was inspired to paint this one from the ever evolving show I see each day. It brings back childhood memories of northern Ohio and Michigan.....minus the mountains, of course.
What more could I ask for? It gets better and better each day. Of course, in the mountains it seems the color is climbing to the sky.
One evening we spied a herd of Elk in the meadow. You can hear them bellowing in the woods this time of year. They come down to the meadows to feed at dusk and dawn.. This herd was one make and about 30 females.
As much as I love it here I will be ready to head south to Florida in the next few days. When the trees are stripped bare, and the cold winds are blowing, I will be enjoying the beautiful beaches. Life is good!

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Butterfly,Nature "PIPEVINE SWALLOWTAIL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe
The Pipeline Swallowtail got it's name from being dependent upon the native plant called the Dutchman's Pipevine. This painting was done after I visited a beautiful native preserve in New Hope Pennsylvania called Bowman Hill's Wildflower Preserve. I had been familiar with the pipevine plants of the tropics but didn't realize there was a native one in the Northeast. I was fascinated by this little tiny flower as all the tropical varieties were 4 to 5 times larger. The Pipevine Swallowtail lays its eggs on the leaves and the young caterpillars group together to look like one large scary caterpillar until they are big enough to wander off on their own. The caterpillars create a chrysalis similar to their tropical cousins by leaning off of a branch and securing themselves by a thin filament. The adults appear mostly black on the topside but when the sun hits them just right they shimmer iridescent blues. On the underside they have bright orange/red spots which make them look a bit scary as they flash color as they hover over flowers while feeding.

while back a Facebook friend contacted me with an interesting
proposition. Ann Ramsey is a master quilter and wanted to know if I
would allow her to create quilt patterns based on some of my paintings.
The results are absolutely amazing. She has been able to capture the
essence of my work and translate it into a fabric work of art.
If you are a quilter, or would like to try your hand at creating something unique for your home, please click here for information on ordering Ann's quilt patterns.
Here is Ann's interpretation of my painting, Back to Basics

Small Abstract Painting, Daily Painting, Original Oil Abstract ,by Carol Schiff, 8x8x1.5"
It has been some time since I posted an abstract......this week I was in the mood to do some non-representative work.
I enjoy abstract, at times, as it gives me the opportunity to concentrate on composition and color relationships. No drawing distractions!
I started this piece by creating lots of texture on the canvas, followed by a coat of acrylic cad. red. Then the fun began as I brought out my oils and just pushed paint around until I was happy with the results. It was that same feeling I used to get when I would stomp around in rain puddles as a kid.
I know I will soon go back to representative work, but today, I am happy with this,

Otters are one of those cute little animals that we all love to feel have human characteristics. The way they float on their backs, using their bellies for a table. I once read they link paws when they sleep, so they will not float away from each other.

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Butterfly,Nature "POLYDAMAS BUTTERFLY & ARISTOLOCHIA GIGANTEA" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe
Art by Mindy Lighthipe,Swallowtail butterflies are in the United States as well as in Central America. The Polydamus Butterfly is in the Swallowtail family and is found in Florida as well as in Central America. It feeds on the very peculiar plant family of pipevines. The plant depicted here has a flower the size of a baseball glove, thus the latin name- gigantea. The flowers act as a trap for unsuspecting small insects which fly into the "mouth" of the flower, travel down the throat of the flower and then are trapped at the bottom of the chamber. Here they are dissolved into the plants membrane. Once the flower is dead, a huge seed pod is formed which splits open spraying the seeds to the ground. Once the seeds germinate more shoots will climb in a profusion of intermingling vines. The female Polydamus lays her eggs on this plant and the caterpillars eat the leaves as well as the flowers. The caterpillar pupates and uses a thin filament or support to attach itself to a stem. The chrysalis looks like a twig or a rock climber attaching himself to the side of a cliff!

Daily Painting, Sunset Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Marsh Sky", 11x14x1.5" Landscape Oil Painting
Life here in the mountains, of North Carolina, is a slower pace for me, But the days are quickly getting shorter and shorter. The leaves are beautiful, my favorite time of year! It reminds me of my childhood days in northern Ohio, burning leaves, apple cider, hay rides. I wonder if people still do those things.
I am still busy, painting commissions, but I managed to paint this 11x14x1.5" landscape, It is a study for a commission.
It is not easy capturing that "glow" from a beautiful sunset, and I am not sure I succeded here. but it is a start.

Small Seascape Sunset Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" impasto painting
I don't know how you start your days, but, whenever possible, I love to grab my camera and a cup of coffee and head to the beach to watch the sun come up. With a morning like that, it is impossible to have a bad day!
I like texture in my art and one of my favorite tricks, is to take a failed painting, leave the texture and use the panel again. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Many artists use their canvases more than once, but convential wisdom is you must sand it down. I
sometimes do that too, but if I want to do a little expressionism, I say, why destroy all that lovely texture?

Botanical Fine Art Painting, Butterfly,Nature "PASSIONVINE & ZEBRA SWALLOWTAIL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe
Heliconius charitonius is common to Central and South America but also resides in southern Florida. It begins mating right after it emerges from its chrysalis. The female lays five to fifteen eggs on the leaves of passion flower vines. The caterpillar (depicted twice the size) has a white body with long black spines and a yellow/green head. It can go from egg to butterfly in a little over three weeks and continues this life cycle year round. The Passion flower depicted here is Passiflora incarnata, a species common to the southern USA. The Passion flower is named for the Passion of Christ on the cross. In the 15th century, Spanish Christian missionaries discovered it and adopted its unique structures as symbols of the Crucifixion. The 72 radial filaments (depicted 10 times actual size) represent the Crown of Thorns; the ten petals, the ten apostles; the top three stigmata, the three nails; and the lower five anthers, the five wounds.

Dog Portrait, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 16x20x1.5 Animal Painting, SOLD
Today, I am posting a commission painting. I find that doing a commission is a whole different ball game. Do you agree?
The client was asking for three paintings of his two dogs. One of each, and one of both animals.

| detail SOLD This is the first painting. I always second guessing myself when I work on a commission. Does the client want this, or do that want that. Is it too dull for them, or too bright, or too much detail, or not enough. It is hard guessing what a perfect stranger would like! Add to that the dreaded deadline! In this case, I had only a short time to complete the artwork, due to my schedule. What if I failed and produce a suitable painting in the allotted time? While commissions are stressful for me, I always welcome them.....I just have to remeber the sense of accomplishment I have, when the project is accepted by the client. I believe a little stretch is good for everyone, especially us artists Thanks for reading my blog today......and keep painting! |
