Sunflower Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 14x18x.75" Oil SOLD

Last summer I visited Colorado and fell in love with the state.  The beauty is breath taking and I was trying to record it all on my camera.

Today's painting is a light hearted, laid back attempt to capture the wild sunflowers swaying in the breeze of the Colorado landscape.

 On a whim, I decided to paint over an old abstract painting, that carried lots of texture in specific areas.

That set the tone of the painting for me.  I stayed loose and free.

Much of the background is from the original painting.

I have a friend who burns her unsuccesful paintings at the end of the year.  I think that is a dangerous activity.  The fumes of the paint and mediums burning cannot be a good thing.  I much prefer to paint over a less successful painting and save a few dollars by reusing the canvas.  I am all about recycling.

I am always fascinated by sunsets, especiall sunsets over water.  This little study is my impressions of a sunset at Fernandina Beach harbor.

Of course, it bares no comparison to the actual photo(or the actual event) I took, but it did provide me with several hours of fun in the studio.

Such a simple piece should not have turned into the project I experienced, but as often happens, it did.  I wanted just the right glow of colors.

It seems with me, a painting either falls off my brush or it is a major struggle.  The falling off my brush part does not happen nearly as often as the major struggle.  After 20+ years of painting, I imagined I would be further down the road.  As my kids like to say, "it is what it is".

I try to appease myself by thinking if it were easy, it would be boring.  Maybe so, but I could handle just a tad more boring,

Lily Pond, 8x6 Oil on Canvas Panel by Carmen Beecher

My painting group had the challenge of painting like one of the Impressionists, so I chose to paint a lily pond, inspired by Monet. Of course, my painting is 8x6 inches; I saw one by Monet in the Louvre that was so huge that I had to back across the room to even make out what the subject was. It was a lily pond, of course. My colors are darker because I was using an actual photo of a pond as my guide, but I rather like the drama.
