OK - I wrote a bit earlier today about some of my process in a comment I left to thank everyone for their lovely input on yesterday's post below. It's about knife strokes, energy & momentum, so if you're so inclined, check it out! And....here's my first ever moonlight painting. This is a subject that can easily lure an artist into a trap! We have an idea in our heads of what moons & suns & flowers & faces, etc. ought to look like. We have distinct visions of them - symbols or icons. But a successful portrait, for example, materializes from the artist carefully studying the shapes created by the light & shadow over the varying planes. Not from painting a head with eyes, nose & mouth. It's the same here - you need to observe what's really there in front of you - the lights & darks, the shapes created, the subtle variation in hue, value & temperature. I guess that's the challenge in painting anything, familiar or not.
